Less than a week after presenting the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71, Ford has hit back with its own off-road focused full-size in the way of the new 2020 Expedition FX4 Limited.
The 2020 Expedition FX4 Limited is intended for “customers who want to travel further off the beaten path,” Ford says. Like the FX4 off-road package for the Expedition XLT, this package adds 18-inch metallic gravy alloy wheels wrapped in 32-inch all-terrain tires, off-road tuned shocks, a shortened chin spoiler and chrome-plated running boards. The package also brings seven different underbody skidplates, including separate shields for the steering gear, engine, transmission, transfer case and fuel tank. A new sand shield blocks sand, dirt and objects from making their way into the intercooler, as well.
Other upgrades including a heavy-duty radiator and Ford’s Advanced Terrain Management System, which allows the user to select different powertrain settings based on the road surface type. Available settings include Mud/Ruts, Sand and Grass/Gravel/Snow. Ford also offers a heavy-duty trailering package on the Expedition FX4, which enables it to tow up to 9,200 lbs in standard-wheelbase form. The automaker says this is more than any other vehicle in its class at the moment. Towing figures for the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe are not available as of this writing.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71
The Expedition FX4 comes standard with Ford’s twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, which is good for 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, along with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The off-road package is only available on the well-equipped Limited Trim, which also adds leather upholstery, wood trim and the Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist suite of active safety features.
This package differs from the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 in that it isn’t an entirely separate model, but is rather a package that can be added to the existing luxury trim level offered with the Expedition. It’s hard to say right now, but we get the impression the Tahoe Z71 will be more of a true off-road offering (especially when equipped with the height-adjustable air suspension) whereas the Expedition FX4 is positioned as more a regular family SUV with some added capability.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71
The Expedition FX4 Limited will carry a $2,035 premium over a standard Expedition Limited, ringing in at $71,865. Pricing for the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 has not yet been announced.

While it’s pleasing to see Ford offer the FX4 package on higher trims of the Expedition/Max, Chevrolet has a huge advantage right now in the full-size SUV segment with the all-new 2021 MY Suburban and Tahoe. They offer more maximum cargo space then both versions of the short and long wheel-base Expedition models (Suburban offering 144.7 cubic feet and Tahoe offering 122.9 cubic feet which is even more than the 121.5 cubic feet offered in the Expedition Max) more engine choices with the class exclusive 3.0 liter diesel engine, and available 4 corner air suspension on Z71 and High Country models. It also falls short behind the new Suburban and Tahoe when it comes to interior quality, it lacks the attention to detail that it’s newer rivals have, especially on higher trims via Tahoe and Suburban Premier and High Country VS the Expedition’s King Ranch and Platinum versions, and feels a bit dated as well.
We’ll see how well the new Expedition will compete against the new Suburban and Tahoe in the long run, because the new model is a huge improvement over the 3rd generation model. Time will tell.
The Z71 looks a beast compared to that thing….still loving the look of the Z71, great job GM
Didn’t TFL break the rear diff on their Expedition FX4?
The Expy is a big, cheaply built whale.
Just look at the side profile of the Tahoe, then the front and the rear, and then compare the total look to the Expedition.
From the side view, the Tahoe looks more aggressive, as if it’s moving fast, but yet it’s parked!
The Expedition looks really lame compared to the Z71. GM did a great job
A poor carbon copy Tahoe/Suburban.
Looks wise, being subjective, my subjective opinion is, the Expedition is a ” SNOOZE-FEST.” ZZZZZ
A boring shoe box with a bland face and a rear, that even after a night of guzzling martinis, would not entice me to partake?
Sorry, Ford. A bit cruel on my part.
Chevy for the win!
The snooze-fest is pretty much all of fords products. the new Explorer looks boring as hell.
Fords have been boring for a while, now.
At least Lincoln found some mo-jo….Joe!
Problem is…. it’s a Ford
Ford Only Retarded Drivers …….
Those are Michelin Primacy XCs – that is a highway all-season tire, not an all-terrain tire.
OMG 71 THOUSAND FOR AN EXPEDITION WTH
