The GM Authority Take
Cadillac sales in the United States improved in a very healthy fashion during the third quarter of 2019. The results represent the luxury brand’s second consecutive growth on a quarterly basis, as well as this year’s best quarterly sales performance, with 39,961 deliveries. This impressive performance enables the sales volume accrued during the first nine months of 2019 to be higher than that seen during the same timeframe of the previous year.
The growth in sales volume is largely thanks to the overwhelmingly positive performance of the Cadillac XT4. The compact luxury crossover posted the highest quarterly sales figure since its introduction in September 2018. Also helping Cadillac achieve its 7-percent sales growth during the quarter was the healthy increase in Cadillac Escalade sales along with a solid start to Cadillac XT6 sales, which had its first complete quarter on the market, though with limited availability during the first part of that quarter.
Meanwhile, five Cadillac models saw sales decline during the quarter, all with double-digit sales declines. Among these is the XT5, Cadillac’s best-selling model, which saw sales decline 18.4 percent. Cadillac is in the process of introducing an updated XT5 for the 2020 model year, and the refreshed model should help sales. In addition, the Cadillac XTS also saw a notable sales drop. Production of the sedan ended in October.
Going forward, Cadillac will launch the all-new CT5 and CT4 sedans in close succession, starting with the CT5 in December and CT4 around the January-February timeframe. The all-new, 2021 Escalade will follow later on in the 2020 calendar year.

What a surprise, they finally offer a full line of SUVs and their numbers are improving. They also have attractive lease programs which I am sure is helping. Turned in an Escalade in the spring and considered the XT6 but it was so bland in person. Ended up with a new Yukon for similar money. If the brand would ever commit and execute a comprehensive program for separate upscale showrooms with excellent service, their numbers would be even higher.
Totally agree… that said the entire line up is lacking…, all the new offerings needed to be better… motor Trend, who likes nearly everything, delivered a blistering review of the CT5 and said the XT6 is not worth buying compared to the Aviator…
The CT4 & 5 should be improved ATS/CTS replacments but that doesn’t appear to be the case… not a strong way to grow your business and conquest sales.. sad.
Motortrend is being stupid. They reviewed the entry level CT5 while expecting V levels of performance out of it. And they put down the interior as being ‘uninspiring’ which is ridiculous. It’s the best interior I’ve ever seen in a Cadillac. From the gauge cluster to the infotainment stack with high quality physical buttons. And more use of premium materials all around.
Cadillac finally nailed the exterior design. It looks premium and luxury rather than the bland ATS(minus the V models) of the past. And the C pillar gives it style. People are just looking for something to hate on. They said the same stuff about the XT4 but it is selling very well.
So we can asses that Cadillac is on the right track. All it needs to do now is apply the new interior philosophy to the rest of its lineup. Which it is doing with the New Escalade and eventually the XT5 and XT6.
I’ve ever seen in a Cadillac – problem is the competition is better so your point is irrelevant as are your other comments. I wish Cadillac was the finest vehicles on the planet but they are NOT and the new vehicles are chintzy in many respects. ALL GM interiors receive universal contempt for parts bin raiding and cheap plastics. Perhaps its the best YOU’VE seen but I’ve seen better interior in a Hyundai than the XT6 which I was very excited about and wanted to buy. GM is cheap and they charge too much… EVERYONE knows that.
THe XT4 I like the way it looks but hate these $h&TTy alph numerics, but the powertrain is lacking. The ATS had a 270bhp 4 and this one is bigger and less powerful… huh, THATS progress? Bet it doesnt get better mileage either? The XT5, I havent seen one but the CTS was a nice car if not world class, but the C-Pillar has been resoundingly critiqued, I’ve read ONE place where its liked and thats your post.
So we can asses that Cadillac is on the right track – you must work for GM because not a single article in any Car Magazine would agree with you or most posters to the various blogs. Thing is everyone here WISHES it were true, but its not…
Have you seen the new CT4 and CT5? Which parts exactly are ‘GM parts bin’ sourced? All I can see is the GM infotainment system which is actually a flawless system. Much better than other touchscreen’s I’ve used in other vehicles that lag like crazy. A very clean interface too. And it’s a 10 inch in the new CT5 and has a slightly unique theme to Cadillac.
The leather in the CT5 is of high quality nappa leather, the steering wheel, aluminum buttons, carbon fiber/wood panels, super cruise, more safety features, swiveling led headlights, etc…. It’s the premium division of GM and does a lot to differentiate itself with these new models. The new interior layout looks very well thought out and cohesive. So, I’m sorry, but I don’t see no GM parts bin in this car. And with this huge jump in interior quality/layout/exterior design , Buick will have more leeway to upgrade their cars as well. And I can tell you the Encore GX is going to be a hit too ….
Why is competition better? Because they fit two very large screens across the dash? They use more plastics now than Cadillac does. And no, I don’t work for GM, LOL. I am a GM fan, but that won’t stop me from approaching these matters objectively. And I can tell you that Cadillac brought up a great product with the XT4 that is being well received by the consumer market and this trend will continue with the heavily revised sedan lineup they will push out.
As for the XT4, it is not underpowered. It is an luxury CUV. And there are a lot of younger buyers in that market, and also people who don’t want to spend too much and still have a fuel efficient car. The Cadillac XT4 delivers, it’s a luxury CUV with the new Cadillac design language inside and out, has AWD, is fuel efficient and smooth. It has been successful and people in that market are not looking for more power.
That red CT5 V in the photos looks really hot. Can’t wait to see reviews of it.
Unless the CT4 and CT5 can perform a miracle, it looks like Cadillac sedans are all but dead soon.
So not quite 2500 vehicles over last year, but with two all new SUVs.
Spin it how you want but reducing the price on discontinued models or old models of upcoming new vehicles is not exactly a success.
However it is a % increase and a number increase so that’s good, I guess.
At these rates I wonder what the payback is on the all new ( old Chevrolet ) Cadillac SUVs ?
At least they were made on the cheap as to sell on the low volume, after all GM wouldn’t want to make a Cadillac a step up from the average GM blah that’s ” Good Enough ”
Well I guess these sales numbers are ” Good Enough ” as well !!!
Way to go Cadillac !!!!
At least the Chinese still think your great !!!!
At a GM event, I remember hearing management say that 52% of GM’s profits come from China, so that’s the core market they will focus on from now on. Outside of the Corvette and Trucks, NA will not get new tech at the same rate as China.
You think it’s bad there, C&D is becoming a Hyundai/K/G sperm bank, trying to force people to buy defective Korean products. I’m surprised Kim Jung Un isn’t the editor…
For Cadillac let the haters hate and watch the numbers go up, only thing I bag Cadillac (and Ford/FCA) is lack of consistency. Just launch the vehicles, have certain amount of vehicles in certain classes and let it take off, not “wait for the 2029 refresh to get the cupholders” or ” our 450hp, 6000lb luxury-liner pick-up is perfect for NYC commuting because cars don’t sell..”
Will all xt5 s in 2020 be updated, or must we
Wait for actual refresh date?
