The General Motors V8-powered SCG Boot beat the Ford Bronco R to take the victory in Class 2 at this year’s Baja 1000. The result was extremely impressive for the relatively small manufacturer and appears to have given company founder Jim Glickenhaus the confidence to fight for the overall win at Baja in 2020.
In a Facebook post recapping SCG’s Baja 1000 victory, Glickenhaus said his crew may build a road legal “hyper” Boot for 2020 with 900 horsepower, full-time all-wheel drive and 42-inch tires. This hyper Boot would be eligible for the top class at Baja, Glickenhaus indicates, though it’s not clear if he is referring to the Trophy Truck class. He says the hyper Boot would make an attempt at finishing first overall in the race and the top eight finishers at this year’s event were all trophy trucks, so it seems it would be built with the trophy truck regulations in mind.
Seeing as the SCG Boot that won Class 2 at Baja this year was powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8, we wouldn’t be surprised if Glickenhaus again opted for GM Small Block power if he goes ahead with his 900-horsepower hyper Boot idea. It’s not very hard to upgrade the LT4 to produce that much power, as tuning companies like Hennessey have proven, and the reliable pushrod V8 already carried him to victory in the grueling off-road race. He also wants the vehicle to remain road-legal, so using a production-based engine would make more sense than a race-spec engine, it seems.
In the same Facebook post, Glickenhaus also shed a little more info on production of the standard SCG Boot. SCG plans to deliver three road-legal Boots soon and an additional 20 next year, split between the two- and four-door models. The road-going Boot features a 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine with 460 horsepower, as opposed to the race-spec Boot’s 650-horsepower LT4. It also uses a GM 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission, whereas the racing version has a purpose-built Turbo 400. Prices start at $258,000 for the two-door model, while four-door versions are priced from $287,500.
