How OnStar Vehicle Insights Help Optimize Fleet Efficiency

General Motors has detailed its new fleet telematics solution, OnStar Vehicle Insights, which is designed to provide fleet managers and drivers with tools and data that help optimize the efficiency and productivity of their day-to-day operations.

OnStar Vehicle Insights, which is available starting today, is capable of relaying real-time vehicle data back to a computer or tablet, including info on vehicle location, driver performance information and more.

“We listened to our fleet customers’ feedback and have created a turnkey telematics solution,” said U.S. vice president of GM Fleet operations, Ed Peper. “OnStar Vehicle Insights helps simplify the fleet management process, allowing our fleet customers, large and small, to save time and money.”

In addition to vehicle location, OnStar Vehicle Insights can also relay information with regards to a fleet vehicle’s health (oil life, mileage, fuel efficiency) and the driver’s performance and behavior when out on the road. It can also provide the fleet manager with business insights, aggregating data in a simplified dashboard so they can see where to make efficiency improvements in their operations.

The system also enables the fleet manager to carry out remote commands, such as locking or unlocking vehicles or remote starting a vehicle. If an employee locks the keys inside the vehicle, they can simply unlock it using OnStar Vehicle Insights, rather than calling OnStar themselves or calling a locksmith.

GM says OnStar Vehicle Insights is compatible with “most 2015 model-year and newer Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles. It will cost fleet operators $15.99 per vehicle, per month, with no long-term contract required. Some vehicles will not be compatible with the system, however, such as the Chevrolet Volt and City Express Vans, along with Low Cab Forward Trucks. Some GM vehicles are built without OnStar hardware as well, meaning they can’t be used with the system. These includes select base Chevrolet and GMC work trucks, among others.

“This is just the beginning for OnStar Vehicle Insights,” said OnStar Vehicle Insights program manager, Michelle Calloway. “We plan to expand our service offerings over time, including the addition of mixed fleet compatibility, so even more customers will have the ability to experience the benefits of our telematics solution in the future.”
