Competitive Sales Comparison

U.S. Chevrolet Spark sales underperformed their segment during the third quarter, with the diminutive hatchback no longer being the best-selling model in its segment. That title now goes to the Mitsubishi Mirage, which managed to grow its sales by 35 percent for a 52-percent segment share, compared to a 42-percent segment share for the Spark and a mere 6 percent for the Fiat 500, which has been discontinued after the 2019 model year.

The GM Authority Take

Though Chevrolet Spark sales volume decreased in the third quarter, it’s important to note that the year-ago quarter saw extremely strong sales of the model, with a 52-percent jump. As such, the slight decrease in Q3 2019 deliveries is not unexpected. That said, Mitsubishi managed to grow sales of the Mirage significantly, seemingly at the expense of the Spark.

Sales in Canada grew 56 percent, and it would appear that some units of the Spark destined for the U.S. were funneled to Canada.

Meanwhile, South Korea sales continued to slide. We initially believed that this was a result of decreased consumer confidence in Chevrolet/GM following the automaker’s very public and negatively-perceived Korean restructuring efforts, which took place in the first several months of 2018. The actions resulting in the closure of one manufacturing facility—the GM Gunsan plant—and financial assistance by the Korean Development Bank. However, we no longer believe that perception-based issues related to the restructuring of GM Korea are behind the decline in Chevrolet Spark sales in the developed Asian market.
