Competitive Sales Comparison

Chevrolet Impala sales performance enabled the nameplate to take second place in its competitive set during the third quarter, behind the Dodge Charger in first place (see Dodge Charger sales) by roughly 16,000 units. In other words, the Charger outsold the Impala nearly threefold during the quarter.

The Impala still outsold the rest of the pack, but by a much smaller margin than in Q2 2019, including the Nissan Maxima, Chrysler 300, Toyota Avalon and the now-discontinued Ford Taurus (see Ford Taurus sales). The Ford model was followed by the recently launched Volkswagen Arteon, and then by the discontinued Kia Cadenza and Volkswagen CC.

The Dodge Charger, Toyota Avalon and new Volkswagen Arteon were the only models to see an increase in sales volume.

At a 40-percent decline, Chevrolet Impala sales fell much faster than the segment average during the quarter, which contracted nearly 5 percent to 62,758 units.

  • Nissan Maxima and Volkswagen CC (which has been replaced by the Arteon) are not full-size sedans, but rather midsize models with more premium content over the similarly-sized Nissan Altima and Volkswagen Passat, respectively. We included them in the report since both models carry similar pricing structures and purchase demographics to vehicles in the mainstream full-size sedan segment.

From a segment share standpoint, the Chevy Impala accounted for 15 percent, a far second to the 42 percent commanded by the Dodge Charger.

The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Impala sales continued their downward spiral in the third quarter of 2019. Though it’s obvious that the mainstream full-size sedan segment in which it competes has become one of the biggest victims of the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics, wherein buyers consistently purchase crossover SUVs over sedans, not all models are seeing declines. For instance, the Dodge Charger, Toyota Avalon and new VW Arteon are growing sales volume.

Even so, the third-quarter Impala sales figures further lend some insight into General Motors’ decision to discontinue the Impala, along with several other passenger-car models. As of this writing, the Impala received a temporary stay of execution, with production extended until January 2020.

It’s worth noting that Dodge continues to outperform the segment with its Charger, which is the only sports-oriented offering in the space. Perhaps that should lend some clues about customer preferences, with one theory being that customers not switching to crossovers are also interested in a sporty four-door sedan, rather than a comfort-oriented offering like the Impala.

About Chevrolet Impala

The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan. It is the biggest Chevrolet sedan currently offered, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic, compact Chevrolet Cruze and midsize Chevrolet Malibu.

The current model was introduced for the 2014 model year and represents the tenth generation of the storied Impala nameplate. It rides on the GM Super Epsilon platform shared with the second-generation Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS.

2016 Chevrolet Impala Exterior 002

Compared to its ninth-generation predecessor, the tenth-gen Impala is an all-new vehicle that is larger, sleeker and more modern. Chevrolet modified its strategy for the new model, as the ninth-gen model was sold to rental fleets in significant quantities, while the tenth-gen is primarily intended for purchase by consumers at the retail level. This condition alone has resulted in a strategic decrease in sales volume of the current model.

As announced in November 2018, the Chevrolet Impala will be discontinued after the tenth-generation model. This means that it will not see an 11th generation model.

The Chevrolet Impala is assembled at the following plants for global markets:

Both facilities are slated to be idled in 2019 as a result of decisions undertaken by Chevrolet parent, General Motors.

  1. I have been a huge fan of the Impala for many years. I just traded in my 2004 Impala SS to purchase a 2019 Malibu Premier. I would have purchased a 2019 Impala, however, I was disappointed to see that Chevrolet did not update the Infotainment system and did not give any updates to the gauge cluster like the Malibu. Because of this, I did not purchase the Impala. I will say that the Malibu has more space than I need for myself and my two children, and gets 32-34mpg average. So looking back, I think it was a blessing in disguise. I am very happy with my purchase.

  2. What do you expect, Chevy doesn’t update the vehicle since it came out in 2014. They cancel it and having nothing new for this year. The deletions out numbered the new additions.

  3. Look at the charger sales numbers, what is GM doing wrong here? What engine and trim level sells the highest for dodge, and what is it associated with in terms of brand

  9. I have a 2015 LTZ I’ve wanted this car ever since the design change in 2014 I love my Impala my only two complaints is that the gas mileage really sucks and they should have made an all-wheel drive version

  10. I had a 2014 and loved it. I bought a 2019 Premier so that I could have one after they are discontinued. One of the finest cars Chevy ever made in my opinion. Smooth, comfortable, beautifully appointed inside, and well equipped for the price.

  11. What do expect when a company does spend a dime of advertising on a product over the course of the making of the car. Look at any of the cars GM has stopped. Not a dime spent on advertising on them. Then they wonder why sales are down.
Buick updated the Lacrosse in 2017, ever see a commercial. Ever see a commercial for the new 3 model Regal. But you do see “that’s not my Buick” commercial. Where they show a Buick car, and person says that not my car and points to a Buick SUV.
And the new redisigned 2020 Buick, a beauty, but only availability is China.

You get what out what you put into something. And they let those models fail.

  12. I have owned many Impala’s over my 53 years of driving, and real sad about the news of no more. I do not understand how people don’t buy this car, it has size, get up an go, looks are awesome on the 2014 to 2020, and they have been very dependable cars for my wife and I.

  13. Chevrolet killed it’s own on this one. Dodge and all the others in the Impalas segment ADVERTISED their vehicles, yet Chevrolet had the Impala in none of it’s advertising, many don’t know about this fantastic vehicle, many think it was already discontinued. Very Sad that the best, and nearly last, American sedan will leave. After they finish intentionally killing the Impala, Chevrolet will not make a regular car I would buy anymore. (Plus the Camaro is going too, leaving only the Corvette). I own 2 Impala Premier sedans, they are a great value, decent mileage, over 300hp, very nice interior, rides good, goes when I push the pedal, massive trunk. So far, not one thing has gone wrong with either vehicle. Someone made the decision that they WANTED to exit the larger sedan market years back and all the sales: educated buyers and word of mouth. Chevrolet just coasted excluding the Impala from TV and print media for the last 4 or so years.
As far as the comments about not “updating” the current version, well if it’s already pretty good, maybe the current generation doesn’t need much updating? But if GM cared… add a sport model into the lineup to compete, how about an SS ? It will be too bad when the Impala dies, but trust me, it was more of a killing.

  14. Was and still is number two in its segment. It possible could have been number one or much closer to number one if GM had upgraded and marketed it correctly. But instead they cancelled it because it was not making them enough money. Instead they put their money into electric vehicles that will not make them any money in the near future. It’s good to think about the future but you should not forget about the here and now.

  15. I can see why Dodge is selling more…performance!!!!…Impala…not so much…that’s what it takes today…

    1. I am no implying that the Impala could out sell the Dodge for several reasons. Front wheel drive vs rear wheel drive,High powered V8 vs not so high powered V6, very little fleet sales, no ad or promotions. The Impala should have offered police specials like they did with the previous version which also was front wheel drive. Heck look at the number of police departments with Ford Explores and they are front wheel drive.

I think the Impala should have offered a performance version, it didn’t have to be a hellcat competitor just another 30 thru 50 HP more than the top rated Engine they have now with enhanced braking and handling of course.

  18. GM destroyed the Impala by not advertising it and no real incentives, dealers hardly had any in stock . The Impala would have done better if advertised and upgraded the transmission to the 10 speed. Not everyone wants a CUV or an SUV.

  19. Staying stagnant for 7 model years, announcing it’s cancellation, zero advertisement , no performance model and previous generation drive trains will certainly do the trick in killing off your full sized sedan in a hurry. So sales tank and GM does what it does best- kill it off instead of investing it and correcting what needs to be done!

    1. Yes hit the nail on the head “joe yoman”. Look at the sales winner, dodge ditched the intrepid for the charger it’s a jack of all trades car. At first its known for its brutish v8 motor and aggressive styling. But I bet they spit out more v6’s then v8 for those who don’t need it or can’t afford it, when cars like the vette and camaro do just one thing just like the impala. I’d like GM to use the alpha and omega platforms more use the LT1 and LFA motors, if you don’t like it as a Chevy change it a little and make it a Buick but keep what’s good

  21. this model must have been a mistake it is the best affordable sedan GM produced and now the IDOTS instead of a redesign the model is killed and now they wonder why sales are down ,they are more brainless than I thought these consumers will still buy sedans but they will not be from GM

  22. They should just make the Impala the way that most people will want it. It’s true it could use a facelift, and an updated powertrain and features. And most importantly a good ad campaign for all its awards, because that’s what more people will care about before anything else.

But at the end of the day, the only real issue with it is that it’s a sedan. If they made it a lifted wagon, like Subaru/Ford’s-global-sedan-replacements, it would sell. All it’d need is to offer all-wheel-drive, and show a spec of at least 6.5 inches of ground clearance on paper. And if it at least LOOKS a little sporty, but rugged at the same time, it will do great. The Impala name has recognition. If it keeps coming back like it always does, and tailors itself to current tastes, it’ll sell.
