Chevrolet Bringing New SP383 V8 EFI Crate Engine To SEMA

Chevrolet is celebrating 65 years of the Small Block with a new fuel-injected SP383 V8 crate engine, a modern-day take on the classic 383 Small Block “stroker” motor.

The SP383 V8 is based on Chevrolet Performance’s existing ZZ6 EFI crate engine and features the same high-flow cylinder heads and modern-day valvetrain. With a longer 3.8-inch stroke, though, this engine is rated at 450 horsepower and 438 pound-feet of torque. For comparison’s sake, the ZZ6 motor has a 3.4-inch stroke and makes 420 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque.

Like the ZZ6 EFI, the SP383 V8 also has a port-style injection system, with the injectors plumped through a neat-looking carburetor-style intake manifold that helps retain the under-the-hood appearance of a classic vehicle. The engine is offered in Deluxe kit form, which includes the throttle body, distributor, damper and flexplate, and also as a Turn Key kit that adds an air cleaner, front-end accessory drive, breath, PCV valve and starter. Both the Deluxe kit and Turn Key kit include an engine controller and wiring harness as well.

“Chevrolet Performance’s newest crate engine builds on a pioneering legacy of engine innovation,” said Chevrolet Performance general director Kris Mayer. “It also expands our unmatched crate engine portfolio, offering customers opportunities to build the project vehicle of their dreams.”

Making the installation of the SP383 V8 engine easier, and all of Chevy’s available crate engines, is the Connect and Cruise program. Using a detailed chart in the Chevrolet Performance catalog, customers can view the matched components and their part numbers for their specific application and also view the ideal GM transmission to pair it with.

“Connect & Cruise systems eliminate the guesswork in selecting the right engine-and-transmission combination for your project,” said Mayer. “Once you’ve selected the engine, our factory-matched combinations match it with a Chevrolet-recommended transmission and identify the necessary controllers, harnesses and other supporting components you need to help get it all installed and running quicker—and with the confidence it’s the right combo for your classic vehicle.”

The SP383 V8 crate engine will be available to order from the 2020 Chevrolet Performance catalog.

    1. Good question. Considering the ZZ6 350 EFI costs $9,371 at Summit, The ZZ6 383 EFI will certainly cost a good bit more. Consider you will still need an ECU as well.

      Considering you can get higher HP LS and LT crate engines for less $$$ with better gas mileage, this is not going to be a good financial option IMHO.

        1. I’ve got the catalog and I may have missed that but it’s still too expensive for a 350 and the 383 will be more expensive still.

            1. Only if you like the way a lsx looks in a old truck. I have a 70 chevy c10 and I am not a fan of the way the lsx engines look in between the fenders of a old truck.

              I would rather have this 383 setup even though it’s a center bolt type valve covers. My old truck has a old style pre 86 chevy 383.

              1. Are you aware that there are aftermarket coil covers to make an LS look like a small block or big block? Without these, I get your point but I don’t understand why you would have issue with center bolt SBC valve covers. Just wondering what HP you got out of your 383 and did you build it yourself? Wanting to do the same to my L98 which the machine shop told me 500hp was the max safe level on a 2 bolt mains with studs. Doubt my Dana 36, the weak link, will handle it though.

  4. As usual, GM will sacrifice sales when they overprice the product. While other auto companies will produce products in different price ranges to satisfy many different people. Again, GM is going down. I think ford or yoda will be purchasing GM soon. Sad very sad.

  5. I’m interested in the SP383 turn key in a connect and cruise package.

    Sounds pretty complete and the photos show a power steering reservoir. But nowhere in the right up do I see where it specifically states that a power steering pump and reservoir are included with the turn key package. It will be going into a 1995 Silverado. No power steering = no deal.

Note that they’re is NO part # for the “connect and cruise” combos but the link will give you Part #’s on each individual component. If $$$ is a factor use the link I gave above for sticker shock. You will not find all your answers here and only on the web if you know EXACTLY what your looking for or at your own financial peril, via a GM dealer. Google search your intentions/desires for your build, the web is your friend. Good luck.
