2020 Corvette C8 To Offer Four Brake Caliper Colors

The 2020 Corvette C8 is replete with customization options. Previously, we took a look at the various roof and nacelle colors offered on the new mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, the spoiler options, the Coupe roof panel options and exterior paint color options. Now, we’re getting up close and personal with the corners of the new Vette, specifically the various brake caliper colors.

Customers have four different brake caliper colors to choose from, one of which is standard, and three of which are offered as optional equipment. Each of the optional colors adds $595 to the 2020 Corvette’s final price.

The four brake caliper colors are listed as (RPO code included in parentheses):

  • Black-painted, standard (J6A)
  • Bright Red-painted, optional (J6F)
  • Edge Red-painted, optional (J6N)
  • Yellow-painted, optional (J6E)

For reference, the 2020 Corvette is equipped with front and rear E-boost-assisted disc brakes, which are squeezed by Brembo four-piston/two-piece calipers in front and four-piston/monobloc calipers in the rear. Rotor sizing is measured at 12.6 inches by 1.18 inches (321 mm by 30 mm) in front, and 13.6 inches by 1.02 inches (339 mm by 26 mm) in the rear.

Upgrade to the Z51 Performance Package and the 2020 Corvette gains front and rear E-boost-assisted disc brakes with Brembo four-piston monobloc calipers front to rear. Brake rotor sizing is upped to 13.3 inches by 1.18 inches (345 mm by 30 mm) in front, and 13.8 inches by 1.06 inches (350 mm by 27 mm) in the rear.

As indicated by GM design chief Michael Simcoe, the brakes “used to be just a functional item,” but are now considered an integral part of the overall aesthetic for a given vehicle.

Of course, that leaves us wondering – which of these brake caliper colors would you opt for in your own 2020 Corvette? 1. I’ve got news for you, Michael Simcoe.
$595. for colored brake calipers is ridiculous
I can do it for $10.00 with a rattle can if I wanted color—
    and I don’t.
    Who cares?

    1. I’m still waiting for the C8’s production date……

Color of brake calipers that’s a subject?

If I don’t want to conform to what GM think is flashy what happened to the bow tie rotors ??? …. say its the latest and greatest some one will say ok ? Oh well . Good luck ?

  2. Are the Brembos standard black too? -That would be jive.
I’ll take the $10 option. I’ve done it before and it’s just fine. High temp paint, properly prepped , and no discolor and no peel. And if your eventual buyer wants the black to match the code, no problem, there’s a can for that too..

  3. Corvette/GM should offer the bigger caliper braking system standard across the product line. The fact that the better, bigger brakes with a significantly shorter stopping distances opens them up to potential lawsuits. The basis is they have knowledge and testing of a better preforming braking system but did not provide it to all customers. Their corporate decision to provide two distinct sized systems will come back to become a major liability for the company in future lawsuits based upon preventable auto accidents involving frontal crashes based upon stopping distances. The upgrade to larger brake rotors which is probably well under a $100 cost for four at the factory component is minuscule to potential liability of a frontal crash where individuals are killed due to longer stopping distances of the standard braking system. Note they are charging $595 ( J6F) for a red colored caliper versus balck and don’t even offer the larger sized braking system unless you purchase the Z51 performance upgrade

    1. What? Why not have every vehicle have two callipers per wheel! That would be enough to stand the front end on its nose?

  5. GM brags about how it’s customers have so many ways to customize there corvettes but key items are not available with the stingray like ( z51 spoiler, magnetic selective ride control) unless you get the Z51 option. Most of those items would beneficial if I was going to the track. My 2017 LT1 GS had the magnetic ride control and I liked it. Why not offer the magnetic ride control as a stand alone option ? If I want it I would have to buy Z51 package at 5000.00 plus 1895.00 for the magnetic ride control. Thats a lot of extra money just to get the spoiler of my choice and the magnetic ride control. Seems like GM cares more about maximizing there profit than giving us customers our pick of options at a reasonable cost.

  7. A last minute color change from bright red to darker metallic red just doesnt look right to me. The car is blade silver with a full black interior. I decided that the bright red might be a little too much “look at me” and, since the tail lights are about the same as the dark red if you turn your head, close one eye, and squint, I went for it. I find that darker, metallic colors tend to be what old people buy (wait! Not yet!) and I am 73 so i suppose that is why. After seeing a lot of cars with black wheels and black calipers, i really like that, the calipers dont lead the parade that way. I have only owned maybe 300 cars so i will tell you MY IMPRESSIONS of a couple of warts TO ME. It wanders. Dont look away cause it wanders worse than my first wife. I compare to an Alfa Quadrifolgio, which has absolutely the best steering I have ever stepped in. And it needs music controls (volume and forward or backward under your thumb. Absolutely buy the lift.I better go ow. The overpowering urge to try to be hillbilly funny. Oh yes, I tried the launch yesterday and about halfway through third gear I “wandered” just a little bitty bit off the road. But, as luck would have it, I didnt get to wreck.

  8. Scott, that is a great question! I have no idea who gives a puck what color calipers are. With a huge sigh of relief I know I can finally sleep. And keep in mind! Dismissing other peoples opinion is how the Pres discredited Fauci “the virus will be gone in a week, it will be beautiful” I am about as far from Trump as i can get, but here is not the place. And the virus is the reason there is no track day. And there lot of empty parking lots for donutting. Just dont breathe in. Finally, I am with you.
