After the initial unveiling of the all-new 2020 Corvette C8 in July, information has been parsed out as more cars are made and details slip into the public. We know all about the LT2 V8 engine, and the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that powers the first-ever mid-engine Corvette, but we are still learning more about the technology that makes the latest Corvette the most capable high-performance sports car ever offered by General Motors.
Two of those technologies are launch control and a dedicated burnout mode. While the switch to a mid-engine package is great for handling and road racing, the new Corvette is still expected to deliver the goods in a straight line and at the drag strip. Burnout mode is to warm up and clean the Vette’s rear tires in the burnout box at the local drag strip, and launch control mode is for nailing the perfect launch once the car is staged at the tree and ready to go. Here’s what you need to know.
How to use 2020 Corvette launch control:
- Put the car in drive
- Adjust the Performance Traction Management (PTM) system to “Track” mode
- Hit the ESC off button twice
- A PTM prompt will appear on the dash asking which mode to select (Wet, Dry, Sport I, Sport II and Race); any mode will work, but Race will have the least traction control intervention.
- Put your left foot down on the brake pedal
- Floor the accelerator pedal with your right foot
- Build engine RPM to 3,500
- Lift off the brake pedal and launch
How to use 2020 Corvette burnout mode:
- Put the car in drive
- Put your left foot on the brake pedal
- Pull both wheel-mounted shift paddles to temporarily open the clutches
- Floor the accelerator pedal with your right foot
- Release the paddles and the rear tires will start spinning instead of seeking a perfect launch.
Naturally, this technology is intended to deliver stellar 0-60 times and 1/4-mile results, but it’s only a matter of time until we see the C8 all over the Internet doing burnouts as they leave the local Cars and Coffee event.
Obviously, we advise Corvette C8 drivers to use launch control and burnout mode in a safe and legal environment.

awesome
road and track performance car of the year is the Hyundai Veloster N. this $30K vehicle beat the c8, 911, huracan, m2, supra, mclaren 600lt and others. wrap your head around that.
Yes, that was pretty weird to see that in the R&T article. I laughed when I saw their result. It just means that the raters are not what they used to be.
For the old folk buyers launch-mode means a stairway chair-lift to get them out the car……
Despite the chatter about how much horsepower the LT2 6.2L V8 may generate, the fact that the 2020 Chevrolet C8 Corvette’s acceleration slows as it passes about 100 mph and why the Mustang GT500 can out accelerate the C8 to the quarter mile suggest that the V8 probably does not generate more horsepower than 495 hp Chevrolet has said.
@Steve, WTF are you talking about. Go away.
say please and i’ll consider it.
What are the 1/4 mile times with vs. without launch control ?
Burnout Mode. Where the hell was this when I was 17?
I think ford is in negotiations to purchase the vette badge.
Yeah, cause gm is totally going to sell a car brand that is the most popular sports car in America. Better luck with buying the gtr from Nissan.
