Comments
These results pretty much silence the following groups of naysayers:
– But those “horrible” screens and interiors in the new trucks! They will never sell!!!
– The design of the new Silverado is horrible. No one will want to buy it because it’s so ugly.
– The engines are outdated, and the competition offers better power trains.
Did I miss any other group?
Yes, retail availability during Q3 was plentiful and abundant. It will be less so in Q4 because of the strike. Meanwhile, GM managed these results without sky-high incentives. In other words, there is genuine, real world interest in these vehicles, and it’s translating to sales.
But can we finally, for once, give credit where credit is due? GM did its homework and is now reaping the benefits, after a huge rollout.
End. Of. Story.
I agree and the trucks look very nice on the higher Trim models where the money is. The Trax and Traverse are also selling very well.
the kill Buick crowd?? considering it basically has its hands tied behind its backs selling 3 not so new crossovers, 2 dead man walking cars and another one with zero marketing it has done fairly well. Imagine what it might could do with some all-new product, decent marketing….in other words a little attention. but we all know which brand GM prioritizes. Once the new Encore, Enspire and all new Enclave?? finally hit the streets with hopefully some marketing it should be interesting to see how Buick’s numbers are affected.
I see at least 6 people are butthurt about eating crow.
It would seem that these people are much more than “butthurt.” Rather, they have been torn a new one. Oh well 🙂
but gm stock down 4% today making it one of the worst performing auto stock today. so not everyone is pounding their chests and declaring victory.
I did my part, bought my 2020HD Duramax !!
I will not eat crow, I never said the trucks won’t sell, find it !!
I said the look of the center stack is horrible, personal opinion, and stick to it !!!
Otherwise love my 2020HD, and will tell everyone so !!
I’m curious , on the trucks, are the 5.3 – 10 speed in these numbers ? or are they still the 5.3 – 8 speed ?
And I still do not like the look of the Silverado front, I bought a GMC again for that reason, and I see I’m not the only one switching, so no crow on that one either, as Sierra sales are up at a higher percentage than Silverado !!
And I have repeatedly said that this day in history the GM engines are the best they have ever, ever been. The new 2.0T is better than the old, the new 3.6 V6 is better than the old, and the new dynamic fuel management seems better than the old !! But now to the transmissions as part of the drivetrain, is the horrible 8 speed junk fixed yet ? I still see a lot of comments on 19s having troubles, but can tell you the 10 speeds I have driven are smooooooth as silk !!
So one more time any GM engine combined with a 9 or 10 speed is great !!!
Still hate it that the Cadillac SUVs are FWD but the components are great !!!!!
Still will not buy a Cadillac with a 2.0T or a 8 speed junk !!! SO.
What is up with that 23,000 number for the XT4, GM is really making up a segment and numbers on that one , Ha, Ha !!
Way to go GM !!!
I get it on the 23,000 number !!
Over the 212 number
Roughly 7000 per quarter for three quarters and then some !!
So great !!
Sorry !!
738,638 people voted with their wallets.
Few bigger a compliment a company can receive.
The trucks finally redeemed themselves. The Trailboss and AT4 are huge studs rnow for GM.
A very good 1/4 but the incentives WERE significant.
Alex, since you like to tell the non-kool aid drinkers where to go, compare this results to the last 10 periods? Is this an anomaly or a trend? How do previous incentives factor? No doubt this is positive but it doesn’t mean GM doesn’t sell vehicles that provide less value.
The Palisade just beat the new Ford Explorer on MT… interior was much better…
The incentives were not really significant. In fact, they were really tight with the money.
Have a look at the tracker here – there is a list outlining every single Silverado T1 incentive (the bulleted list on this page):
http://gmauthority.com/blog/2019/10/2019-chevrolet-silverado-discount-cuts-nearly-10000-off-price/
The Silverado and Sierra incentives during Q3 were on about half of the trims and only on two body variants. Ram had incentives on every single Ram 1500 model, trim, body variant… across the board. Let’s also keep in mind that the more affordable Regular Cab models were about 40 days churn during the quarter, which means inventories were not built up.
“Is this an anomaly or a trend?”
I couldn’t tell you just yet. Need to review more data and stats before a conclusion. It will be tough to tell thanks to the strike.
“The Palisade just beat the new Ford Explorer on MT… interior was much better…”
Let’s see if all the money poured into the interior translates into lasting commercial success. Keep in mind that the GM trucks outsold every other full-size truck in the industry in Q3… despite not winning many reviews, especially when it comes to the cabin.
“Alex, since you like to tell the non-kool aid drinkers where to go”…
Correction: it doesn’t matter if one is a drinker or non-drinker of the kool-aid you refer to. I simply tell it like it is… whether positive or negative. That’s literally the entire purpose of my job – to report the reality. Kool aid consumption definitely not a prerequisite.
An honest reply, thank you.
I agree,
Thanks Alex !!
The vehicle that still surprises me the most, is the Buick Encore. For an older design it’s still hot in the sales department . Sales just keep climbing.
Its platform mate, the chevy Trax sell’s even more. Both vehicles sales combined beat up most of the competition.
Kinda miffed that GM is dropping the Trax name for the upcoming new Trailblazer.
They are not dropping the Trax in favor of Trailblazer. Rather, the plan is to sell both models. The trailblazer is a complementary model to the Trax, not a replacement. The same goes for Encore and Encore GX.
That is interesting. Which leads to the thinking that there may be a redesigned Trax in the future? Thanks for the info, Alex.
Yup, my pleasure!
The future of the Trax and Encore is curious. Obviously, they can continue making them until the cows come home… but at some point, they will become outdated. From there, GM will likely issue another refresh. That can be the short- and medium-term plan. The long-term plan is unclear at this point, since the direct replacements to both models – the Tracker and second-gen Encore for the Chinese market – were not built with the U.S. market in mind.
Hmm interesting. I was thinking pre-winter sales bump. But the figures aren’t specific enough to know which trims and 2WD or 4WD/AWD. Well hey, good news for GM.
Glad to see the Malibu up despite SUV/truck sales.
I helped the Malibu sales. My 2020 Malibu Premier was built on August 29 finally after waiting four months and it arrived at the dealer on September 16, 2019! I picked it up on September 19, 2019. I like it even better than my 2016 Malibu Premier. No clue why it took so long but things moved really fast once I contacted the factory in Kansas City, Kansas and got the ball rolling otherwise it wasn’t supposed to go into production until September 30 and it was in GM’s computers on June 13 I believe or June 16. With the strike on now God only knows when I would’ve gotten my car and my six month Lease extension on my 2016 model probably would’ve been over and I would’ve never even received the $1500 lease loyalty which was the only incentive that they were offering. This lease is costing me $200 more a month than my previous Malibu. I’m sure I could’ve bought a Cadillac SUV for less money but I don’t need an SUV and I didn’t want a Cadillac I wanted my Malibu which I think is just as nice as any car on the road today in its category.
I have rented the 2019 Malibu this past August for a week when I was visiting Florida. I drove my mother, my brother and his wife in it, and they all lived how smooth it was. I liked the “start-stop” system at traffic lights, but I would prefer a real hybrid model, even a plug-in version using the Volt’s technology. For anyone who does not know the new Malibu, just rent one and try it for several days.
Interesting that the Malibu is still holding its own–it has outsold the Colorado year-to-date.
Not good that the Colorado sales are decreasing.
Was to be expected with the arrival of Ranger and Gladiator. Will be interesting to see what happens once pent-up demand on those competing models ends.
Just look in the new issue of MT. CHEVROLET Colorado came in 1st 2nd Jeep Gladiator came in 2nd and 3rd ToyotaTacoma. It seems to the testers that the Chevy Colorado was clear cut favorite. I am seeing more and more of these comparisons.
Yes, but unfortunately the buyers of the Toyota are not moving to the GM products… at least at the retail level. GM might be able to eventually win the fleet/commercial contracts in favor of the Colorado, but it’s having a hard time convincing taco owners (current and potential) from switching to either the Colorado or Canyon. Most of the buyers of the duo are new to segment.
Also remember, you can not get a 9 or 10 speed in the Colorado, so you have no choice but the GM 8 speed junk !!
Unless you get the diesel with the 6 speed !
My opinion
I love my 2015 Canyon though !!!
3.6 – 6 speed with a tune !!!
I run full synthetic oil so I hope I can get the 150,000 before the timing chain replacement !!
Wish it was the LGZ – 9 or 10 speed !!
Or now the 2.7T – 9 or 10 speed !!!
That would be great !!
So I would guess the next update will just be awesome !!!
Timing chains have not been an issue on 3.6 engines since around the 2011-2012 time era. If the owner follows the oil life indicator and uses Dexos synthetic oil there is no reason these can’t see 200K or more miles with no issues.
GM will get the Taco owners when they fix the horrible customer support !!!!
GM as a hole would eat into the Toyota, and Lexus sales if they would just address this issue publicly !!
It has to be the low hanging fruit pretty quick here !!
In my opinion.
If I have my numbers right, GM truck sales beat Ford this quarter. Silverado (155482) plus Sierra (66198) means the twins sold 221680. Minus the 1629 Medium Duty sales and that is 220051 units. The F-series (which doesn’t include the F-650 or F-750, hence the MD removal), sold 214,176 units according to Ford Authority.
Impressive and good for GM.
Oddly though, Silverado alone, remains third to Ford and Ram. Ram hit 161,635 and so can claim second place in nameplate and Ford can continue to claim “best selling” for the F-series. The change here seems to be the Silverado/Sierra split. Sierra took about a quarter of GM trucks sales in the previous generation. This quarter, they took nearly a third. So Sierra is eating a greater amount of Silverado sales than in previous generations.
Whether the greater proportion of Sierra sales is positive attention from added tech and Denali exclusives or negative reaction away from Silverado looks is debatable. Or it may be just a general trend of the truck buying market going to higher trim levels and options.
If it weren’t for the strike, I would have got my Bolt EV by now. Missed my $3500 tax discount :(. Glad to see the car is selling well though, I hope it will stick around so that I can get a 2019 with good cash on hood incentives once the 2020’s roll in. Some places are offering $6000 off, which is a good price for the Bolt.
Wow the Envision sold very very well. I guess all that bashing about how the vehicle is made in China makes it not worthy of ownership well I say all u guys the Envision is in fact a solid not 1 recall suv especially the 2.0 l turbo premium ii with gkn twin clutch awd Go China!
Did anybody noticed how XT4 outsold crossair, XT5 outsold Nautilus, XT6 outsold aviator (it’s probably too early to tell about that one) and Escalade destroyed Navigator? All that talk about how new Lincoln’s are better and nothing… Cadillac holding its own! Very interesting!
Ford/Lincoln vehicles look better on paper and reviews, but at the dealerships their availability is limited, discounts are rare and small, and you can’t easily find low trim versions. This is understandable as Ford has more costly powertrain (take Aviator vs. XT6 for example) and newer platform, the transaction price has to be higher to ensure a healthy margin. People complain about GM dealership and service quality but Ford is not that much better either.
It’s still a bit distressing to see Colorado/Canyon, Impala, Volt, Camaro, Sonic, Regal, LaCrosse, XTS, CT6 and Suburban/Tahoe sales dropping. Most of these are the best they have ever been yet consumers refuse to buy them and GM refuses to promote them. I would also really like some more effort on the Silverado/Sierra pickup trucks cleaning up the 8 speed 1-2 rough shifting that people are complaining about, some of the lost content put back in place and the interiors on the LTZ/High Country/ Denali models upgraded. Otherwise if your a truck/SUV fan then GM looks to be doing a bit better. It would be nice to have Silverado back in it’s number 2 spot!
TESLA WILL EAT GM ALIVE
Tesla is a wimp compared to GM. They only sell electric cars. GM and Ford will whip Tesla with electric trucks because they have been selling them before Musk (or you) was born!
