However, the Equinox outsold all other contenders, including the Ford Escape that’s currently undergoing the launch of the all-new 2020 model (see Ford Escape sales), the Jeep Cherokee (see Jeep Cherokee sales), the Subaru Forester and Subaru Crosstrek, the Mazda CX-5 (see Mazda CX-5 sales), the Hyundai Tucson, the Volkswagen Tiguan (see VW Tiguan sales), the Kia Sportage, the Equinox’s corporate cousin GMC Terrain (see GMC Terrain sales) as well as the Dodge Journey (see Dodge Journey sales), Mitsubishi Outlander, and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.
In addition, Chevrolet Equinox sales grew at a faster pace than the segment average, with the Equinox managing to post one of the highest sales growth rates in its segment on a percentage basis. However, the model’s top three rivals—the RAV4, CR-V, and Rogue—all posted higher growth rates.
This third-quarter performance gives the Equinox a segment share of 10 percent, lower than the 16 percent commanded by the RAV4, 13 percent for the CR-V and 12 percent by the Rogue family.
The compact mainstream crossover segment expanded 0.13 percent to 780,134 units in Q3 2019.
The GM Authority Take
Chevrolet Equinox sales during Q3 2019 represent the nameplate’s best-ever third-quarter sales performance. This comes as very welcome news, especially given the intensity of the competition in the mainstream compact crossover space. The upward third-quarter performance follows a very healthy fourth-quarter 2018, an even better first-quarter 2019, along with its best-ever second-quarter performance in Q2 2019.
Combining the 79,799 Equinox deliveries with the 23,058 deliveries of the GMC Terrain results in 102,857 combined deliveries in the compact crossover space. The result is impressive, but is still some 22,000 units lower than the 124,012 deliveries recorded by the Toyota RAV4. The circumstance demonstrates the strength of Toyota in the segment, and GM would be well-advised to seek solutions in overcoming the Japanese competitor’s advantage in this space.
That said, the RAV4 is an all-new model while the Equinox has been around since the 2018 model year. GM will soon freshen the Equinox for the 2021 model year, which should increase the product’s competitiveness and increase attention.

About Chevrolet Equinox
The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover. It slots above the Chevrolet Trax and below the Chevrolet Traverse. It will also be positioned below the rumored to be the future Chevrolet Blazer. The first-generation Equinox ran from the 2005-2009 model years and was based on the first-generation Theta platform. The second-generation Equinox was offered from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. Both the first- and second-generation models were "tweeners", in that they straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The third-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its two predecessors, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.
The third-generation, 2018 and newer Equinox features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.
The Equinox is assembled at the following GM plants:
- GM CAMI plant in Ontario, Canada operated by GM Canada
- GM Ramos plant in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, Mexico operated by GM Mexico
- Wuhan II plant in Hubei, China operated by Shanghai-GM

Is 4th place really something to celebrate? Can Chevrolet ever lead a segment? For that matter GMC Terrain should be doing better as well.
Nox is a nice vehicle but laggs on the coasts and still carries that Chevy stigma among certain demos. Granted Nissan cheats by combining Rouge and Rouge Sport numbers so Nox is really number 3 this quarter.
Then again I’d buy the Mazda! They do all the things Chevy and GMC should be doing especially with interior and exterior design.
Those are respectable numbers, but it’s disturbing to see Chevrolet in fourth place. It seems the RAV4 is the Toyota Camry of CUV’s.
