The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT5 sales in Q3 2019 underperformed the segment, and underline how badly the vehicle needs the 2020 model year midcycle enhancement. Luckily, an XT5 refresh is coming and has already been announced. The current XT5 is a highly-competitive model, but has fallen behind its adversaries in terms of exterior styling and trim level packaging/configuration.

Specifically, rival offerings feature more delineated trim elements, including the ability to have “luxury” or “sport” styling—whereas the current XT5 only offers one styling set that skews toward a luxury appearance over a sporty one. The 2020 XT5 refresh addresses these matters by implementing Cadillac’s Y trim level strategy, delivering Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport trims.

In addition, we also posit that the new Cadillac XT4 has cannibalized some sales from the XT5. In the third quarter, Cadillac XT4 sales totaled 8,986 units—which more than makes up for the 2,778 fewer XT5 units sold during the timeframe. In addition, the Cadillac XT6 accounted for 4,316 deliveries during the quarter, with some of those sales possibly coming from customers who would have otherwise purchased the XT5, thereby resulting in further cannibalization of Cadillac’s midsize, two-row crossover offering.

Ultimately, sales of the Cadillac crossover lineup grew 67 percent during the quarter, representing the highest growth in the luxury CUV space in the U.S.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Cadillac XT5 sales in Q3 2018, unless otherwise noted

About Cadillac XT5

The Cadillac XT5 is a premium luxury crossover that replaced the Cadillac SRX in the Cadillac range. The XT5 slots between the compact Cadillac XT4 and upcoming three-row Cadillac XT6 in the Cadillac lineup.

Currently in its first generation, the XT5 was introduced for the 2017 model year. The vehicle is based on the regular-length wheelbase variant of the GM C1 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Acadia and upcoming, future Chevrolet Blazer. A longer-wheelbase variant of the same platform underpins the second-gen Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave.

2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum Exterior Review 020

For the 2018 model year, the XT5 received several new exterior colors, a new "base" trim level that offers all-wheel-drive, the Rear Seat Reminder technology, and various new accessories.

For the 2019 model year, the XT5 deletes four existing exterior colors to make room for four new ones, while making a couple package-level changes: the Driver Awareness Package becomes standard on the Luxury model while the Driver Assist Package becomes standard on the Platinum model. Two sets of 20-inch wheels become available. In addition, the 2019 XT5 receives a new, second-generation wireless smartphone charging system that is higher power is now compatible with Apple iPhones. Finally, Provence leather replaces micro-suede on the mid-panel of the instrument panel.

2017 Cadillac XT5 Platinum Interior Review 002

The 2020 model year will deliver a mid cycle update that includes revised trim level structure (adopting the Cadillac Y trim level strategy), slight revisions to the exterior design, a few small updates to the interior, and the introduction of a 9-speed automatic transmission in place of the 8-speed unit on the 2017-2019 models.

The XT5 is produced across the following GM plants globally:

  1. Add all the Cadillac Midsized average GM blah together and are you even the Lexus RX numbers ?

If you sell 5 thingies and your sales increase 150% you still sell only 12.5 thingies !!!!

    Love those percentages !!!!

    67% increase WOW that’s a lot!!!!

I bet that percentage increase X profit per unit is HUGE return on investment !!

O but that’s right, there isn’t that much investment cost do to there all just Chevrolets with a plastic Badge !!!

    But that’s my opinion !!

    Good luck Cadillac !!!

      1. Just think Cadillac should offer more than a plain old average GM blah vehicle for more money.

        That’s all.

And if you don’t sell anything ” Cadillac ” then you sell 10 of something is that a success ?

Did you have an opinion ?

Or just counting exclamation points ?

        1. @lifelong So let me get your argument straight: your perspective is that record crossover sales while attracting new customers to the brand is a bad thing… am I getting that right?

No, That is not what I am saying, or trying to say.

I think it is great ! that GM has increased sales in the Cadillac SUV lineup overall !

What I am trying to say is: Is this a success for Cadillac ? GM ?

To me this is just more ” Good enough ”

Its ” good enough ” that Cadillac sold more vehicles !

            Its ” good enough ”

The numbers are no where near any of the ( what I would see as competition ) but ” Good Enough ”

Again I just think that GM/Cadillac should have offered just a slight bit more than the competition and Better service for equal or less money for three years !!

Just three years to win some sales numbers better than ” good enough ”

After all , what I am also trying to say is, if you don’t sell many SUVs, because you don’t offer any, or your reliability and customer support are a joke, than doing anything better than horrible is a good thing ?
            I guess ?

Is that what you are trying to say ?

            Reply
          2. Because again,

If you sell 1 thingy in the today !

And you sell 2 thingies tomorrow !!

That is a record sale ?

            Is that success ?

            For a Cadillac ?

            I can’t wait for that Escalade !!

Then we will see what GM should have done here on this midsized average GM blah onslaught !

            At least I hope !!

    2. @lifelongGMowner I just gotta say I do not understand why some Americans would choose Lexus over Cadillac or German brands. Yes, they have good reliability but, I gotta admit cadillac has gotten better with their reliability standards pretty well over the past few years. But I still dont understand why people choose Lexus ugly looking exterior and outdated interior cars over others.

  2. People get on Cadillac for targeting the Germans in sedans, but I think continuing to chase Lexus in the CUV segments will yield worse results.

My hypothesis is that buyers in this segment do care about handling, performance, and powertrain options; they overlook FWD/AWD in the RX because of Lexus reliability reputation.

If there’s any truth to this, Cadillac will have better chances beating the Europeans in performance than they do beating Lexus in percieved reliability.

    1. Having just traded our RX for an XT5, the XT5 has it all over the RX in handling and performance (which is the reason we switched – RX drives like an appliance). XT5 also is delivering better MPG. i can’t attest to reliability as the XT5 is still fairly new (the RX was a reliable vehicle).

Don’t knock the XT5 till you actually drive one.

  3. We have a 2017 xt5 Platinum. My wife drives it and likes it. She chose it over the Lexus. Having said that, I’m disappointed that the 2017 Platinum didn’t have adaptive cruise control standard, the center screen is small and the suspension is really tight, like driving in the back seat in the Northeast is uncomfortable. We will not get another xt5 unless these problems are solved, granted #1 can be added through a package, but any luxury brand in 2017+ damn we’ll have adaptive cruise control as a standard on the highest trim.

  5. owning one (luxury) because of the great exterior lines , interior layout , and comfortable ride BUT it does need more standard safety features and better interior material . lets look back maybe to the 60’s and 70’s and look at the inside door panel , although it is dated that’s CADILLAC level , but GM’s MARY and her penny pinchers think OK is OK HEY it’s NOT . GET back to the Cadillac level
