Competitive Sales Comparison

Buick Regal sales performance puts the model in third and last place in its competitive set during Q3 2019, with the results mirroring those seen during the second quarter of 2019. The Kia Stinger outsold the Buick Regal for a second-place finish, while the Acura TLX outsold the Regal and Stinger, almost on a combined basis.

From a segment share standpoint, the Buick Regal had 21 percent share, equal to the year-ago quarter, while the Kia Stinger had 30 percent and the Acura TLX had 49 percent. Hence, the Acura almost outsold the Regal and Stinger combined.

The sporty midsize premium car segment contracted 11 percent to 11,705 units in Q3 2019, with Buick Regal sales falling faster than the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The slump in third-quarter 2019 Buick Regal sales should not come as a surprise given current market trends, wherein customers migrate towards crossovers and away from sedans. However, slumping Regal sales aren’t just the result of consumers preferring utilities over sedans, for two specific reasons:

  1. The Buick Regal is not a sedan. Instead, it’s offered as the Regal Sportback and Regal TourX ruggedized wagon. As such, the Regal family should theoretically be protected from the ongoing slump in sedan sales.
  2. Buick Regal sales volume does not even come close to that of the Acura TLX, which is a traditional sedan. Meanwhile, TLX sales fell the least on a percentage basis when compared to the Regal and Stinger. This shows that there is still demand for sedans, and that consumers prefer Acura’s offering over the Regal Sportback.

We remain hopeful that Buick Regal sales will rebound during the fourth quarter of 2019, so long as the model does not suffer any supply shortages related to the Russelsheim plant that produces the Regal. The facility is now owned and operated by PSA Groupe, since GM sold Opel to PSA in 2017. However, we wouldn’t hope for a sales boost too much given that GM/Buick don’t seem to be all that focused on actually selling the model.

  1. How the Stinger is outselling this car shows just how much GM and Barra don’t care one bit about it. The Stinger offers but one 5 door hatch body style compared to Regal which also has a rugged AWD wagon. GM matches Kia in offering both a 2.0T engine and a V6 performance model but the Kia V6 is turbocharged and makes more power. Both Kia and Buick dealers never seem to have either of these in stock at any dealer I have been to recently. And Subaru sells the hell out of there car based raised up wagons with std AWD. Their is no excuse why this vehicle isn’t selling and GM should hold their proverbial heads in shame for turning their backs on one of the best kept secrets in their arsenal.

  2. As frequently noted, the car seems to receive almost nothing in terms of marketing and advertising support. Many potential buyers do not even know that the Regals exist or are available. And many dealers lack inventory for these models.

  3. I am not sure what GM is even thinking or should I say not thinking. Their is no advertising what so ever on these cars. I was purchasing a new car 2 months ago. I was out shopping, did not want another SUV. So I was looking for something different, I loved the practicality of a wagon. So I was working on deals on a Subaru. Then my wife told me about a Buick she saw. I never heard of a Buick Regal wagon (TourX), no adds, no commercials, nothing. So we went and looked, it was love at first site. It was exactly what what we wanted, sporty, 2.0 turbo, luxury, awsome quite ride.
Every where we go, nothing but compliments, people stop us to ask about it and want a tour. Its daily we get compliments. What’s sad, everyone says the same thing, know one knew this car existed.
This car could take tons of sales right out from Subaru feet. Isn’t that the goal of sales? No kidding sales are down, if you don’t market it, no one will buy it. That’s sales 101.

    1. I defy anyone to provide a link to a TV advertisement for the Regal Tour X. It’s almost like General Motors doesn’t want to sell the car. ?

  4. I totally agree 100% with the above 4 comments. I don’t see any ads, I don’t see them on dealer lots. It seems like GM goes to bed every night praying that the Regal/Tour X doesn’t succeed. So sad.

@Frank Wherry: Glad to hear that you ended up with the Tour X. What I think I love the most about my Buick (Encore) is how quiet it is. With my job, I drive a lot of new cars and newer trade-ins or lease returns. I also deliver new cars for our dealership and have to ride in a lot of Uber’s coming back. It’s mostly import brands (after all, I’m in L.A.) and many are Toyota’s, Honda’s, Hyundai’s and Nissan’s. Not a single of those brands come even close to the Buick for interior quality and ride isolation. Last week I actually rode back in a newer Subaru (not sure which model, but a wagon/SUV style). That thing was so noisy that I just couldn’t carry on a conversation with the drive. Terrible car.

  5. You’re right. GM dosen’t want to sell them. Why, I don’t know. I own 2 new Regals… beautiful cars

  6. in my area there are several Buick/GMC dealers. The largest one has had no Regal Sportback’s; just a couple of the TourX wagons last time I looked. The one dealer that has had stock of the Regal GS seems to be moving them. He has had 3 come in within the 4 to 6 weeks and all 3 have been sold. So there is very little inventory of Sportback hatchbacks out there.

  7. I picked up a 2018 TourX for my wife last August and we love it; we’re really looking forward to trying out the AWD this winter.

It was heavily discounted yet highly optioned, therefore a great value for the price. I’d get another one for myself if I had the space for it.

  8. I tried using the Costco Auto service. This is the time of year they partner with GM. The rep could not find any TourX for me to test drive. She said I would have to order one a 2020 model from the factory. I live in the Philadelphia metro area and there is NOTHING. It is crazy that they are selling any vehicles at all.

    1. Try a search using carsoup or similar. There are dozens of brand new Regals and TourX within 100 miles or less of Philly. That’s how I found the one I purchased.

      1. You make a good point but shouldn’t Buick make the process easier? The local dealer say they can’t find anything and the Buick website restarts you to the 2 or 3 nearest dealers. They are really trying NOT to sell Regals.

Well I have been purchasing new G M cars since 1965 and I have had a lot of lemon’s and a few limes. I love this car it’s great I traded in 2015 Cad. ATS coupe performance model I do miss it a little But I also have a 2019 Vett G S.. But what the hell are they doing this is a great car, I do not want an SUV or crossover. 10. the Regal/Commodore doesn’t compare to the car it replaced in Australia. i’m 6’6″ and withe the drivers seat in a comfortable position for me to drive it, no one but a small child can get in behind the driver, the previous VF Commodore has heaps of room for me to sit behind a driver of my size. the new car isn’t as balanced on the road as the old car, the engines are harsh trying to make the power of the old engine. its a FWD POS. only the AWD is close to the handling of the car it replaced but is twice the price. dump the POS GM. sell the Cadillac CT5, a true sedan, as a chevy, buick, holden etc. V8. V6, puff pack 4. RWD
