Chevrolet Malibu sales decreased 18 percent in the second quarter of 2019, which we attribute to competitiveness issues as well as changing consumer purchase dynamics that have consumers favoring crossovers, SUVs, and trucks over sedans. Now, a new Chevrolet discount reduces the price of select Malibu models by $3,250 during the month of September.
The Incentive

- 2019 Malibu LT: $4,000 total cash allowance when financing with GM Financial
- 2019 Malibu LT: $1,250 Customer Cash + $2,000 Purchase Bonus Cash = $3,250 total cash allowance
- This discount does not require financing through GM Financial
- 2019 Malibu: $1,250 Customer Cash + $1,000 Purchase Bonus Cash = $2,250 total cash allowance
- Excludes L and LT models
- 2019 Malibu finance offer: $500 APR Cash + 0 percent APR for 72 months (interest-free) when financing with GM Financial

About Chevrolet Malibu
The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan sold in most markets where Chevrolet has a business presence. It is currently Chevrolet's second-largest sedan, in the U.S. and Canada, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and compact Chevrolet Cruze but under the full-size Chevrolet Impala.
The current, ninth-generation model was introduced in 2016. It rides on the GM E2 platform shared with the Buick Regal, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Holden Commodore NG, and the Cadillac XT4.
For 2019 - the fourth model year of the ninth-gen model - the Malibu received a midcycle enhancement, otherwise known as a facelift or refresh, that consists of revised exterior styling, a new Malibu RS trim level, a CVT transmission for L, LS, LT and RS models, a new infotainment system, a new 8-inch reconfigurable driver information center (DIC), LED headlamps on the Premier model, and various other new features.
The Chevrolet Malibu is produced at the following GM plants:
- GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas, USA supplying the Americas
- GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea supplying Eurasia
- Shanghai GM Jinqiao North in China (GM China) supplying China

Of course it’s not selling, double the money I can have a C8 in my driveway instead. And still have room for golf clubs
They sell about 10,000 – 11,000 units per month. This is without really marketing the car or even trying to advertise – and without offering all wheel drive or a wagon or coupe variant.
The Malibu is a good car if you don’t need all wheel drive. The hybrid model is very good – just not available in all trims unfortunately.
They added the start/stop defeat switch this year – correcting what I think was the Malibu’s biggest flaw.
It’s too bad that the Malibu and Regal can’t more closely share a chassis and production line. An all wheel drive wagon version of the Malibu would probably sell reasonably well if they actually tried.
Subaru’s Outback sells about 180,000 units per year.
I noticed on Chevy’s website that the 2020 Malibu now has std alloy wheels for the base L trim and the Premier comes with the huge 19″ rubber and pano roof as std fare. Still no advanced safety equipment offered on the lower trims and you still have to pay extra for it even on the pricey Premier. They also didn’t correct the lack of power, lack of features on the overpriced LT trim level and the desirable 2.0T is yet again restricted to the costliest Premier model.
You can get a better handling, more fuel efficient, and higher performance car if you buy an Accord. I’ve no idea why anyone would buy a Malibu unless they or their kin and kith work for the US auto industry.
Doesn’t help any that it’s an ugly car.
Beware of the Malibu. I have a 2013, and my engine light is on all the time. I’m told it’s a computer issue and nothing is wrong, and I can come in whenever the light comes on and they’ll check it to make sure nothing’s wrong. I repeat; it’s on all the time. It never stays off long.
Love my 2009 Malibu with the 6 speed auto, but hate the feel of the new CVT, wish they would offer the sport version with the 2.0T and 9 speed auto or my preferred transmission of choice 6 speed manual.
