Competitive Sales Comparison
In an interesting turn of events, Cadillac XTS sales rebounded in the second quarter, enabling the large luxury sedan to remain the best-selling model in its class by a very wide margin. In fact, the XTS sold more than three times as many units as its nearest competitor, the Lincoln Continental (see Lincoln Continental sales), and accounted for a 75 percent segment share – a full 16 percent more than in Q1 2018.
The Acura RLX remained a distant third in the segment, losing 36 percent in terms of sales volume.

The GM Authority Take
We can’t imagine that news of the XTS’ coming demise is what really propelled this rebound in Cadillac XTS sales, as knowledge of the discontinuation is not widely known among “regular” car buyers (as opposed to enthusiast circles). Additionally, if such a detail were common knowledge, it would more than likely have an adverse effect on XTS sales volumes.
If anything, we believe that a boost in fleet sales was the primary reason for the uptick in XTS sales during the quarter. Whatever the case may be, it will ultimately be short-lived given the model’s impending discontinuation after the 2019 model year. That said, it’s nice to see the XTS remain the best-selling model in its segment, even if it isn’t long for this world.

About Cadillac XTS
The Cadillac XTS is a full-size premium sedan that consists of the XTS Sedan and XTS V-Sport Sedan. The vehicle was the first Cadillac model to be introduced after GM's bankruptcy in the 2009-2010 timeframe and is larger than the compact Cadillac ATS and midsize Cadillac CTS. It is a similar size to the full-size Cadillac CT6 prestige luxury sedan.
The current, first-generation XTS was introduced for the 2013 model year. The vehicle is based on the extended-length wheelbase variant of the GM Epsilon platform known as Super Epsilon. The same platform underpins the second-generation Buick LaCrosse and tenth-generation Chevrolet Impala. The lineup also includes various XTS livery models, including hearse, limo, stretch limo, and more.
For the 2018 model year, the XTS gets a midcycle refresh, with revised exterior styling, slight revisions to the trim level structure, two new exterior colors along with revised interior color combinations and pairing. It also gets improved front seats for higher levels of comfort as well as revisions to the suspension system to provide more comfort for occupants. There's also a host of technology improvements, such as the addition of new active safety features, the new CUE 3.0 infotainment system and more. For more on the updates, see 2018 Cadillac XTS changes.
Cadillac had plans to discontinue the XTS around the 2017 model year, but has decided to continue selling the model and give it a midcycle refresh. Even so, it is expected that the model will be discontinued after the 2019 model year, with the Cadillac CT6 serving as its indirect successor.
The Cadillac XTS is built at the following plants:
- GM Oshawa plant in Ontario, Canada operated by GM Canada to satisfy North American markets, and
- Shanghai-GM Jinqiao North plant operated by GM China for the Chinese market

I’ve actually seen a quite a few of these around. So it seems to be retail sales are good to. Right who knows what vehicles are staying or going until the Strike is over. I think this car is a good car for Cadillac to have.
My opinion: The XTS is still a very nice car and should stay around.
When they say fleet sales, it would be nice to see how many are actually fleet (such as Enterprise) and how many go into livery services. Around where I live, you see a ton of XTS’s in livery for obvious reasons: Well built, attractive, roomy, rides very well, and (probably) one of the lowest of all the cars listed above for operating costs. This is a huge factor for livery service, as having a car in the garage causes them to lose a lot of income and thus adds greatly to the overall costs. Selling Volvo now, they have been attempting to break into the livery market with the Volvo S90. Huge mistake! Those cars have tons of issues and have proven to be bad for livery service so far.
This is an auto worth keeping considering how poorly the rest of Cadillac sedans are doing.
This has always been a good seller for Cadillac and while the platform is pretty old, it’s a nice car and…. it keeps selling. As such It dies next week… only Sr Mgt knows why.
What I found interesting was the chart showing the CT6 sales… it outsold the 7 Series a year ago in this 1/4 and in the current 1/4 outsold the LS & A8… It is such a shame they killing the vehicle, it deserves more investment. It’ll never outsell the S but it’s an important product and a technology showcase !
Where will the XTS/CT6 buyers go as Cadillac vacates the large luxury sedan segment entirely? I don’t see them moving down to the CT5 or over to the Escalade or XT6 as those are very different vehicles. My guess would be this is going to be a boost for the Lincoln Continental. One might ordinarily think they could go down to the Buick LaCrosse but GM is killing that off as well.
If I were running Ford, I’d be looking at a new Lincoln Continental based on the RWD Aviator platform. I understand the market for such a product might be contracting but with no competition, Lincoln could take all the livery business and all of the personal-use business and keep a nameplate in their lineup that is synonymous with their brand and, done right, it could be the kind of exceptional product they’ve been missing for years. I would envision a glamorously styled center-opening door sedan for the personal use market and a factory built limousine for the livery market as Cadillac used to do with their Series 75.
I may be swimming upstream with my thinking but I am not convinced the SUV/CUV thing is forever. For a while it looked like the whole world wanted a minivan and the automakers rushed to produce them en masse. Then the fashion changed and now they’ve become more of a niche market with most carmakers abandoning the segment entirely. I doubt the same fall awaits the SUV/CUV but I do think we may see cars make somewhat of a comeback if the automakers understand that they are going to need to be beautiful again to regain their appeal.
XTS built out 2 weeks ago in Oshawa, it had a great run and as the numbers show it was still a decent selling vehicle for Cadillac despite what people said about the platform. Now to build out the Impala ( end of October ) and turn off the lights.
Love my XTS. Just bought it 10 days ago.
My question is what will the limo or hearse builders work with once the Xts is discontinued ?
I love my 2014 XTS. In my opinion, Cadillac should keep around their large sedan. The XTS is my favorite car and I’ve had plenty over the years. If they do indeed kill off this large sedan maybe we could talk them into one last model year… the XTS 2020. Perhaps with a fuel efficient yet down right scary V8 and the option to select either floaty or sporty rides?
In the good old days which wasn’t very long ago they could easily get away with having both the CT6 and XTS. In these sad SUV/truck obsessed times only one can survive. On that note it would be far more logical for the heavily invested in CT6 to be the one moving forward. With that said Cadillac does need to re-align it a bit and bring interior quality up to the outgoing XTS’s standards. There should also be a RWD CT6 on offer with the 3.6 for a starting point of 49995 so it better competes price wise to the XTS and Continental. If GM cancels both they are total boneheads and will totally lack any full sized sedans in there entire lineup.
“There should also be a RWD CT6 on offer with the 3.6 for a starting point of 49995 so it better competes price wise to the XTS and Continental.”
Asking GM to forego an extra $9K is not good enough of a reason to deliberately push the CT6 downmarket.
Cadillac needs to go up, not down. Cadillac does not need rely on price undercutting so that it may repeat its downfall it had in the 1970’s.
Love my 14 and now have a 19 xts..love them both..Mary barra should be fired for this move.
Exactly – – some people want CT6 to compete with the Chrysler 300 on price and I don’t really consider this an exaggeration.
CT6 is great but the lux sedan space has many worthy rivals ranging fro Hyundai Genius to Jag and so on.
XTS fills a unique niche and one possibily worth GM keeping around. In NYC XTS as livery is like an advert for the brand plus the vehicle handles older demos keeping them away from the upmarket portfolio.
Ultimately GM will kill Cadillac outside of China because in a crowded market details such as interiors and fresh marketing must be perfect. This is why Johan is back at VW. .
My 2016 XTS is probably the best car I’ve ever owned. Zero problems. I love it. I plan on keeping it longer than I’ve ever kept a car, especially since there won’t be a replacement. I don’t understand GM’s decision, considering its steady sales.
GM is shooting itself in the foot….again.
