Competitive Sales Comparison

Cadillac XT4 sales were healthy during the second quarter as inventories grew while awareness and advertising also increased. However, the XT4 was outsold by the Acura RDX and Lexus NX, as well as the Cadillac’s corporate cousin, the Buick Envision (see Buick Envision sales). The Acura and Lexus sold roughly twice as many units as the XT4, while the Envision outsold the XT4 by roughly 2,000 units.

The XT4 outsold the Lincoln MKC (see Lincoln MKC sales), which will soon be replaced by the Lincoln Corsair, which will soon launch as the 2020 Lincoln Corsair. In addition, the XT4 also outsold the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, BMW X1 and X2 (which are the same vehicle with different bodies), the Infiniti QX30, and the Audi Q3, which was undergoing a generational changeover during Q2.

The luxury C-crossover segment contracted 12.56 percent to 62,418 units in Q2 2019.

The GM Authority Take

GM stated that the XT4 was the best-selling vehicle its segment during Q2 2019, the same claim it made during the first quarter. However, it’s unclear how the automaker arrived at this conclusion, since two other same-segment models – the Acura RDX and Lexus NX – outsold it by a factor of two in both quarters. We suspect that this circumstance is due to GM defining the segment for the vehicle differently than reality dictates.

Going forward, we expect XT4 sales volume to continue increasing as the 2019 calendar year progresses, as both availability and awareness improve compared with the first half of 2019. In addition, XT4 sales should increase globally as other markets – notably South Korea, Russia, and Europe – see their regional launches of the small luxury crossover SUV. For those markets, especially Europe, the XT4 will introduce an all-new, market-specific turbo-diesel engine.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Cadillac XT4 sales in Q2 2018, which were non-existent since the model went on sale in Q4 2018
  • In the United States, there were 77 selling days in Q2 2019 and 77 selling days in Q2 2018

  1. We suspect that this circumstance is due to GM defining the segment for the vehicle differently than reality dictates.

This is the best statement in this article !!!!!!

Its true however, sad but true.

You could include a lot of GM vehicles in this statement, or at least GM’s definition is different than reality dictates !!

Also, could someone give the % drop in XT5 sales, it is still my belief that Cadillac has sold no more SUVs with the introduction of this 2.0T GM average blah, and it has just eaten into the XT5 sales number.

Also I would love to watch the same thing with the ” all new ” XT6, average GM blah vehicle, as it eats away at XT5 sales !

Anyway, way to go Cadillac, you got to love it when a plan comes together !!!!!

    1. Get with it, Lifelong. It isn’t the “all new” XT6, it’s the “First Ever” XT6! And, the way Cadillac keeps renaming everything, any slightly new product always qualifies to be called the first ever. It’s become quite comical.

  2. Q2 xt5 sales of 13,118. Down 23% from 17,045.
    Q2 xt4 sales of 7,080

Total sales between the two of 20,198, and increase of 18.9% when compared to only xt5 sales of Q2 2018. Is there cannibalism here? Yes. Have they sold more SUVs as a result of adding xt4. Yes.

  3. Thanks for your info Brandon,

Looks like nothing but good news from onslaught of new Chevrollac SUVs, adding 3153 vehicles in a downward market !

    Way to go Cadillac !!!!

Setting the new standard of the world.

  4. Cadillac should keep an eye on the Lincoln MKC replacement – Corsair. MKC is already biting at the heals of the XT4. Sales of MKC contracted this quarter as dealers clear lots for the Corsair’s arrival. Based on what we have seen from the Corsair, and how the Aviator stacks up against XT6, Cadillac needs to step up its game compared to Lincoln.

  5. Acura and this particular Lexus are considered “near luxury” not premium like Mercedes or BMW / Audi. So who I’d Cadillac trying to be? This space is for Buick. This company just keeps on disappointing then fabricates it’s own category so it can be #1. The competition is laughing at GM and customers are not responding. This vehicle needs Volvo XC60 beauty and an interior to match for it to stand out. Armed with much better looks and a world class cabin I think the mkt would respond.

If once proud Cadillac cannot out sell 2 gussied economy vehicles with a brand new vehicle, then perhaps they need quit being so freaking cheap and field competitive luxury vehicles

    1. “Acura and this particular Lexus are considered “near luxury” not premium like Mercedes or BMW / Audi.”

That statement is pretty much impossible to support in this segment. Every vehicle in this space is “near luxury” and every vehicle in this space is “premium”. The demographics, purchase considerations and values are very close for every vehicle in this category so the delineation doesn’t really work.

Your argument could work if we were talking about Mercedes-Benz S-Class vs. Acura RLX. But in this particular space, the demographics are too close to draw any sort of line that would be useful.

Also consider that XT4 inventory was on the low end during Q2… and that national advertising didn’t start until the final months of Q2. This would suggest that XT4 volume will improve in Q3, as both availability and advertising was running at full capacity.

      1. Thank you ALEX. Finally! Finally someone has recognized that this segment is one with no room for splitting into premium and prestige. The lines are blurred and cross-shopping takes place across all makes.

We looked at every model listed here except for the Infiniti which is just a rebadged Mercedes. We ended up with the X1 which is the most well rounded model. The XT4 was a close runner-up… but the engine and transmission in the X1 are so much smoother that it was pretty much a no brainer.

We’re now 30K into the X1 now and loving it. Also, the BMW dealer blows the Caddy dealer out of the water in my area. One is modern and bright and beautiful while the other is a place for geezers to meet up coffee. Caddy has 90% of the product and 50% of the retail experience.

          Agreed !!!

Not just Cadillac dealers, GM dealers !! Most GM dealers I visit are clean and bright, but the feel, the feel, when you are in a place where you feel that the people there care !! You can feel it !! And that is a trickle down from the top, the top meaning GM !!
GM just cant call the dealers and ask them ” what are you doing for the customers ”
GM has to mandate how the customer is treated, but as you know,

GM has horrible customer support !!!!

So when GM puts forth a plan of how to treat a customer, how would they know ?
GM hasn’t treated a customer in a long, long wile !!!

Caddy has 90% of the product and 50% of the retail experience.

And that 90% is at the top end , in my opinion !!!
And that 50% is at the top end, in my opinion !!!!

Anyway, we have been over and over this, and yet nothing changes !!
Yet Cadillac just looses more and more market share, and nothing changes !!!

I just can’t believe GM does the same thing over and over expecting something to change !!

I’m sure it will work this time you just wait and see !!!

          In my opinion.

          1. Yes, the X1 has a smoother powertrain. The BMW dealer experience tends to be top-notch as well… though not always. And what? What has BMW gained from all that?

It gained defeat… as the XT4 outsold both of the BMW entries in the segment (X1 and X2) COMBINED during Q2. The XT4 must be doing something right, eh?

And at least you agree Alex that the BMW powertrain is smoother, as is the Audi !

In pervious posts you made me believe that if I hadn’t driven the BMW, Audi, or the XT4, that the XT4 was smoother !

So that makes me happy, all is good !

I’m sure this vehicle has had the exact effect that GM was hoping for, good for GM !!

              Way to go Cadillac !!

      2. It’s not hard to justify, I seriously doubt people who shop Mercedes, Audi or BMW also shop Acura, but possibly Lexus. Your comments speak with authority, but no substance. This product is a very weak effort and probably overpriced. It shares a platform with what the Equinox and even though it just came out I saw a review that placed it behind the Acura. Is this the renaissance we expect from Cadillac? Seriously it’s absolutely nothing special… which Cadillacs “ought” to be and used to be. For proper packaging look at the Kia Telluride: “Kia has sold 34,160 Tellurides through August 2019, its fantastic…. Why can’t Cadillacs be fantastic and incredible values? Because current GM leadership are idiots and are doing more harm than good…

        1. “I seriously doubt people who shop Mercedes, Audi or BMW also shop Acura, but possibly Lexus.”

          Actually, they do. A lot.

My comment, which you say lacks substance, is backed by actual data. Go ahead and do some research and educate yourself. Review local cross-sale reports. Pore over Polk data for purchase consideration and intent. Once you do that, you will come to the same conclusion I neatly summarized for you above… though I doubt you’ll actually make the effort to follow through with this research. Criticizing everything GM does using baseless comments filled with conjecture and zero actual data, is more your speed.

Yes, your statement is indeed full of hot air with zero data to back it up. Mine is backed by actual data and research. You know, this thing called reality, as defined by facts. There’s the authority and substance you refer to, wrapped into a nice package with a bow on it.

“Why can’t Cadillacs be fantastic and incredible values? Because current GM leadership are idiots and are doing more harm than good”

Yeah yeah, the “idiots” who are now selling several thousand units of the XT4 per month in a segment they never competed in before (meaning they’re not as establishes as the competition, which makes the XT4 sales even more impressive). The same ones who keep beating all street expectations for financial performance, despite the ongoing bashing of armchair quarterbacks like yourself. The difference is that GM is a multi-billion dollar business. Sure, they’re not perfect. No automaker is. But they keep posting very solid performance despite the boo-hoo criticism from yourself and others. So yeah, the plan by the so-called “idiots” is working. Stings, don’t it?

      3. Hey Alex,

No article here on that CUE delamination class action lawsuit !!

I just can’t figure out why people don’t want to buy a Cadillac !!

With the recent history of great quality, reliability, and customer support, its a wonder Cadillac can sell anything !

Do you have a total on the number of class action lawsuits currently against Cadillac ? or even GM as a whole ?

That is some great class leading customer support right there !!

Well at least GM and Cadillac are leading the automotive industry in one thing !!

  6. My equinox 2.0T AWD, which has almost the exact same drivetrain as this Cadillac but better power, and more interior space, cost me $25,000. I don’t see why this market segment is so crowded. Who has the money to blow on an overpriced small 2-row crossover? If I’m going to spend $50,000, it’s going to be on a truck or a larger SUV, or a really nice sedan or sports coupe. I honestly don’t understand why anyone would pay this much for a grocery getter. And that goes for any of the vehicles in this class. I have no doubt that the XT4 has good chassis tuning and drives really well…but…that doesn’t cost very much money. Really just a matter of stiffening a few suspension parts, selecting the right components. It isn’t inherently more expensive at all. This car probably costs GM about the same to manufacture as my equinox, give or take.

It’s a great car for a household that can afford to blow $25,000.

  7. I thought by guy Mark Reuss wrote in that Fluff Cadillac article that the XT4 was the number one selling vehicle in its segment? HAHAHA
I said it then and I will keep stating it, it is a shame what GM Brass have done to Cadillac. The Beancounters are running the show and it is embarrassing.
Hey Mark and GM, just wait until the All new Audi Q3 and Lincoln Crossair comes out.
Also right around the corner will be the All New Mercedes GLA. And lets not forget the updated BMW X1 coming soon to the States.

      1. I understand that. They shouldn’t have to do that though.
They should have just made a better all around vehicle. The XT4 is actually decent but GM never goes for the lead. That in my opinion is the issue.

  8. Live to dream.. Cadillac offering a XT4 with the LWC Twin-Turbo 3.0L DOHC-4v V6 making 335 hp as this would make the XT4 competitive with Porsche’s Macan.

    1. Yeah or even just the 2.7T would be the kick Cadillac should have as a base vehicle.

But not at GM, a base vehicle is a base vehicle no matter the badge !

To GM the Cadillac badge is nothing more than the same GM vehicle with a different looking skin !

      In my opinion.
This vehicle has been a joke from the start, and the XT6 isn’t far behind !!
I prefer the looks of the XT6 though personally.
If Cadillac had the XT6 on the CT6 type platform with the same engines as the CT6, it would have been a hit !!!
Instead we just got another Chevrollac, or GM average blah vehicle , with the Cadillac badge !
