Competitive Sales Comparison
The LaCrosse’s Q2 2019 sales performance leaves the large premium sedan in last place in its competitive set, behind the Lexus ES and Lincoln MKZ (see Lincoln MKZ sales). In addition, Buick LaCrosse sales fell much faster than the segment average during the quarter, enabling both the ES and MKZ to further their sales volume lead.

The GM Authority Take
The LaCrosse has been discontinued, and this dismal sales performance clearly shows that sad state of events for what is otherwise a solid product that could have been so much more.
Going forward, we expect Buick LaCrosse sales to continue dwindling until stock runs out. It’s truly a shame given that the updated (and rather hot) 2020 Buick LaCrosse refresh will not make its way to North America, but will rather be a China-only affair.
It’s worth mentioning that Lexus is defying all odds and market trends and has managed to boost sales of the ES, which is all-new for the 2019 model year.

About Buick LaCrosse
The Buick LaCrosse is a full-size premium sedan that slots above the compact Buick Verano and midsize Buick Regal. The current, third-generation LaCrosse was introduced for the 2017 model year. The vehicle is based on the long wheelbase variant of the GM E2 platform. The short-wheelbase variant of the same platform is shared with the sixth-generation Buick Regal and ninth-generation Chevrolet Malibu.
The 2018 model introduced several new colors and the GM 9-speed automatic transmission in place of the 2017 model's 8-speed. It also added a new standard powertrain in the form of the mild-hybrid 2.5L engine with eAssist coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the 2018 LaCrosse Avenir was introduced to serve as the range-topping model.
The 2019 LaCrosse introduced two new colors and a Sport Touring (1SH) trim. A refresh is expected for the 2020 model year.
The third-generation LaCrosse is built at the following plants:
- GM Detroit Hamtramck factory operated by GM USA supplying North America
- Jinqiao South factory operated by Shanghai GMÂ supplying China
In November 2018, General Motors announced that it will discontinue the Buick LaCrosse in the United States market, a move that will result in the idling of the Detroit-Hamtramck plant where it's built. The vehicle will remain available in China.

It’s a discontinued car with not many left on the lots. Maybe that’s why. Anything for a headline.
The Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Volt, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Impala, Cadillac CT6, and Cadillac XTS sedans will all be discontinued in the US by the end of 2019; there will be a 2020 Buick LaCrosse for China which means unless you’re a fan of the iconic model, you’re probably going to buy a Buick Envision or Buick Enclave CUV instead.
Or unfortunately go to a competitor.
It would be pretty wild if the LaCrosse name came back as a CUV based on the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer.
la crossover?
It just looks too much like a Malibu probably a pretty good car though once again general motors comes late to the party
What the hell do they expect? Announce you are discontinuing a product that I want? I’ll go to a competitor as you abandon markets…
I totally agree with curious observer!!
This is a stupid, dumb article. They aren’t even making them any more, and I haven’t seen any, on any lot, for over 6 months! There’s none to sell. They gave $10,000 off in January. Everyone has a gloom and doom story to tell and it’s all propaganda and nonsense!
This is a great sedan that should never have been discontinued, in my opinion.
I’m inclined to agree with you, however general motors has dug themself a hole that they can’t seem to find their way out of. They do everything behind everyone else and they do everything because everyone else does it they are not leaders they are followers they are afraid to take the initiative, they can build as good a car as anybody as we have seen but their sales will always suffer because of their marketing witches amateurish and pedestrian at best….. They need 2 step up their game the first at something then people will start to listen. In the case of this lovely Buick it is unfortunate that as handsome as it is it is too closely related to a Malibu and looks like a Malibu in profile which is why they had to discontinue it nobody will buy it or at least very few will. I do agree with you that they should have kept the car instead of jumping on the let’s abandon sedans bandwagon perhaps one day they will learn…… Until then their sales will always suffer and they will be looked down upon
I get what you are saying. At one time Dodge was bringing back the old names like Charger, Challenger and old styling like the Magnum. That’s when GM said they weren’t making the TransAm anymore. Really?
When you mentioned the Malibu compared to the Lacrosse, though, I owned a Malibu and the Malibu is a tinker toy compared to the Lacrosse. I couldn’t wait to get rid of the Malibu. I loved how the Malibu drove, it was fairly comfortable and this one had the lane -keep assist, and auto braking. The Malibu got great gas milage, but it was like sitting in a drumb. At 70 mph, you could hold a conversation in the car, especially to a back seat passenger, because there was sooooo much road noise. Hated how loud and hollow the Malibu was to ride in. I test drove a Impala and it wasn’t much better. A little better but not much. My Lacrosse is day and night different. Quiet, quiet, quiet. Nice ride and much bigger cabin. So glad I got one of the last Lacrosses. I’ll be driving this one for a veerrrrry long time, especially since many of the GM cars are coming from Poland, Mexico, China. Made in USA Lacrosse for a long time.
I meant to say that “in profile” lacrosse looks like a Malibu….and yes they are night and day different
I always have to comment because I have the 2017 lacrosse and love it, so sad about the 2020!
I have a 2010 great car looking to upgrade to a 2020 HEY GM can you help me with that I guess I will be looking outside of dumb GM
