Competitive Sales Comparison

The increase in Buick Encore sales during the second quarter of 2019 enabled the subcompact crossover maintain second place in terms of sales volume in its competitive set. The Jeep Compass (see Jeep Compass sales) came in first yet again, though Compass sales saw a decline of over 13 percent compared to the Encore.

Following the Encore in third place was the Honda HR-V, the Encore’s corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Trax (see Chevrolet Trax sales), Ford EcoSport (see Ford EcoSport sales), Hyundai Kona, Jeep Renegade (see Jeep Renegade sales), the new Nissan Kicks, Toyota CH-R, Kia Niro, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Mazda CX-3 (see Mazda CX-3 sales), Fiat 500X (see Fiat 500X sales), and the discontinued Nissan Juke.

GM’s cross-town rival, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, fields three offerings in this segment – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. The trio accounted for a very impressive 56,754 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the two GM offerings – the Buick Encore and Chevy Trax – accounted for a cumulative 46,081 deliveries. As such, FCA outsold GM by 10,673 units during the three-month-long period. GM held a 21 percent segment share while FCA held an even higher 26 percent. Individually, the Encore and Trax each commanded an 11 and 10 percent segment share, respectively.

The subcompact mainstream crossover segment expanded less than 1 percent during Q2 2019 to 214,631 units. As such, the Encore’s 5 percent increase in sales outpaced the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Going forward, it will be interesting if Buick Encore sales volume maintains the upward trajectory experienced during the second quarter. The model is being threatened by newer segment rivals such as the Nissan Kicks, Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R, Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona on the one hand, and on the other hand by internal products such as the upcoming Buick Encore GX, which will be sold in the United States alongside the first-gen Encore.

The 2020 Buick Encore GX is larger than the “regular” Encore and will be positioned between the Encore and Envision in the Buick lineup

As it stands, the Encore is one of the oldest vehicles in the segment, having received a facelift in 2017. As such, it’s entirely possible that the all-new Encore GX may cannibalize sales of the outgoing Encore, despite being slightly larger and having a higher price point.

About Buick Encore

The Buick Encore is a subcompact crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It slots below the Envision as Buick's smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared most directly with the Chevrolet Trax; a variant of the architecture is also shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo. The model was Buick's first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space.

Having launched for the 2013 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, an updated interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more.

The 2018 Buick Encore represents the fifth model year of the first-generation Encore. The model receives several changes including one new exterior color, a cabin ionizer, capless fuel fill, and several package-level changes. The 2019 Encore got two new exterior colors, the deletion of the Preferred II (1SD) and Premium (1SN) trim levels, and a new Safety Package called Safety Package II. The 2020 model is expected to be the last model year of the current, first-generation Encore before an all-new, second-generation model arrives.

The Buick Encore is produced at the following GM plants:

  1. Anyone who is looking for a smaller SUV/CUV should certainly drive the Encore. It blows the rest away in almost every area. It’s very quiet, rides well, handles well, great MPG’s, is prices well and (IMO) is very nice looking. Stands out from the rest in a good way. This runs side by side with Lexus, Acura, Lincoln and some other brands as well. Way better than offerings from Toyota and Honda.

  2. I hope that Buick continues its sales success of the Enclave and Encore with the Encore GX and the Enspire.

  3. with the correct product mix Buick is relevant and a money maker for GM. The Enspire hopefully will add to the numbers….along with some decent marketing not 2 year old ads showing vehicles you no longer sell.

  4. Relict of European influence by Opel. It looks fresh and elegant. New one it is just small reedition with zero innovation and better style. Just new product for chinese costumer.

    1. As owner of 2016 as a commuter great car with a crappy engine. 75k of trouble free miles followed by 10k of multiple engine issues with no support from Buick or GM customer care. Sad that my last experience with GM as a 30 yr customer is this engine and this engagement with GM customer service.
