One of the main areas of focus for engineers developing the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD was the truck’s towing capacity and trailering technologies.
Some aspects of the Silverado HD that help improve the towing experience include its more robust front and rear axles, 28-inch diameter cooling fan, optional camera trailering system (with 15 camera views) and the “transparent trailer” in-vehicle rear camera view. There’s also an in-vehicle trailering app which includes things like a trailer light test, trailer diagnostics, trailer tire pressure and temperature monitoring, maintenance reminders and a pre-departure checklist.
In a recent advertisement promoting the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD, General Motors chose to highlight the truck’s various towing advancements, skipping the fluff and giving the viewer only relevant information on the heavy duty pickup. The ad shows a family preparing their truck and trailer for a weekend camping trip, with the father ensuring the trailer is properly set up to keep his family and him safe when out on the road.
“We set out to make the best HD trucks on the market, bar none,” Silverado HD chief engineer Jaclyn McQuaid said following the truck’s release earlier this year. “We increased towing capabilities across the line, not just for dually buyers. We added class-leading towing technologies, such as 15 available camera views, to make trailering more convenient, whether pulling a large cargo trailer or fifth-wheel camper. And we made a host of changes to make tasks easier.”
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD is offered with two V8s – a new 6.6-liter gas V8 with 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque and the familiar 6.6-liter Duramax LM2 diesel V8, which is rated at 445 hp and 910 pound-feet of torque. The gasoline V8 will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, while Duramax models receive GM’s new Allison-branded 10-speed automatic.

I have had my 2020 Silverado 3500 HD srw for almost 3 weeks now trading a 2017 Silverado 2500 HD for it. This 3500 rides by far better than the 2500 I traded, almost like a half ton ride. The truck seems quieter on the highway and the 10 speed Allison is super smooth. I liked the DEF fill under the hood because I could hear in the fill pipe when it was getting full, the first time I filled DEF in the 2020, which is now beside fuel fill, I over filled it and had DEF all over the side of box. All the camera views I have used so far are really cool, as is the trailer light test. Just wish the trailering app would hold more than 5 trailers as we have 8. On my LTZ trim all lights are really cool LEDs but not the license plate or backup lights? Pretty impressed with truck so far. Two weeks ago we ordered a 2020 3500HD chassis cab to replace a 2008 for our family business. Ordered LT trim but could not get XM radio or 120 volt outlet, that makes no sense at all and hope they have that resolved before our truck is built.
