TSB Seems To Fix 8-Speed Automatic GM Transmission Problems
Sponsored Links
We’ve covered the problems of the eight-speed GM transmission on numerous occasions. In fact, we cover a class action lawsuit brought against GM back in April, complaints from owners, and even a recommendation that GM replace the eight-speed altogether with a new unit as quickly as possible. Now, GM Authority has learned that there’s a new fix that seems to be alleviating the eight-speed’s shifting woes outright.
As of July 8th, 2019, GM began using a new type of Mobil 1 automatic transmission fluid for the troublesome transmissions. Customers that complain of shuddering and harsh shifting characteristics in the 8-speed GM transmissions are recommended for a trans fluid flush. As of August 7th, GM dealers should also be flushing all potentially affected new vehicles on the lot.
According to TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) 18-NA-355, the latest update addresses “torque converter clutch (TCC) shudder conditions on 8L45 and 8L90” eight-speed automatic transmissions, RPO codes M5N, M5T, M5U, and M5X. Affected vehicles include Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, as follows.
Chevrolet
- 2015 – 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2015 – 2019 Chevrolet Corvette
- 2016 – 2019 Chevrolet Camaro
- 2017 – 2019 Chevrolet Colorado
GMC
- 2015 – 2017 GMC Yukon
- 2015 – 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
- 2017 – 2019 GMC Canyon
Cadillac
- 2015 – 2017 Cadillac Escalade
- 2016 – 2018 Cadillac CT6
- 2016 – 2019 Cadillac ATS
- 2016 – 2019 Cadillac ATS-V
- 2016 – 2019 Cadillac CTS (excluding V-Sport models)
- 2016-2019 Cadillac CTS-V
The issues with the 8-speed GM transmission are two-fold. First, some customers report the transmission shuddering frequently. Secondly, the shifts are very harsh between first to second, and then second down to first, especially when accelerating and the transmission is upshifting or decelerating and the transmission is downshifting. These conditions are most commonly observed under light and medium throttle applications, and as often during full throttle applications.
However, a new fluid flush appears to fix the issues, with some customers beginning to report a dramatic change in shift quality after swapping out the old juice. If the flush doesn’t fix the issue, the next step may be to replace the torque converter, which could be glazed.
The issue seems to stem from “moisture content in the transmission fluid.” As such, the old GM transmission liquid is swapped for new Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP fluid. Driving the vehicle for about a week or so improves shift quality even further as the new fluid cleans things up inside the transmission and the adaptive shift algorithms relearn various parameters.
This is obviously a big deal for owners struggling with their vehicle’s eight-speed. Hopefully the new fluid swap will provide a lasting fix.

Had the flush performed on my 2019 Silverado with 2400 miles on it. The whole truck would vibrate @ 65 MPH with the cruise control engaged. Accellerating from a stop felt like the truck was constantly being bumped forwards. Since the flush, the truck has been a smooth operator. I hear and feel a momentary vibration once in a while, so I wonder if the transmission and DFM are both relearning. Since the problem is now documented with my truck, and since the dealership in Batavia, NY is pretty good, I’m confident that they’ll service any future problems that might arise.
I did the fluid change in my 2017 Colorado.
It helped for about a week.
Now the problem is worse than ever.
I have 70,000 miles on it.
It is far out of warranty and I have a long loan on it. I feel stuck.
I have been quoted over $4000.00 dollars for a rebuilt GM transmission installed.
When I called the dealer they said they had never heard of this problem. But what I have read it is common.
If any one has a low budget solution I’d love to hear it. I already spent $500.00 changing the fluid.
JR
Try the Trifecta tune hearing very good things. If your waiting for a fix from GM its been 5 years.
Did you also change the transmission fluid filter, it seems like no one has done that. I personally changed my fluid and cleaned the pan and magnets up (the old filter was just packed with the old fluid). I changed mine about 4000 miles ago, haven’t had a problem since. I also drive a Silverado.
$ 4000 for rebuild is not bad….friend had 6spd done 2 weeks ago for 4200….Several articles I seen is GM is fighting the lawsuit till then end which means it will be years before a resolution….I had flush done in March…put more than 15000 on it since…still doing the same old….I’ll just drive it till it takes a dump and figure out something else….
Have a 2018 1500 Sierra 8 speed. Noticed shake at 35000. GMC dealership did the Tranny fluid change and shake went away. Will be watching it closely in the future. Seems like a easy temporary fix to me. We’ll see.
Try Lubguard platinum and a good ATF like Amsoil and Trifecta. Worked for myself no issues since several years
Have a 2015 GMC 2500 HD with 85,000 miles. Dealer called this morning. Need new torque converter
Vehicle well serviced and used in my business in sales. Apparently this is a common problem GMC doesn’t want to accept responsibility
Anyone have problems with 2020 silverado 8 speed ???
SOUND LIKE THEY DIDNT FOLLOW PROCEDURE . IF YOU HAD A GM DEALER FLUSH IT THEY SHOULD STAND BEHIND THERE WORK. MONEY FOR FLUSH SHOULD GO TOWARDS THE CONVERTER NOT REPLACE TRANSMISSION .AND I BET YOU PUT A CALL INTO DBC THEY WILL DO A CALCULATOR OR FULL REPLACEMENT UNDER WARRANTY . YOU NEED TO GO TO A DEALER THAT HAS A QUALIFIED TRANSMISSION TECHNICIAN , THEY ARE FEW AND FAR BECAUSE THE PAY ISNT THERE
Sorry what does DBC stand for?
Hello friend been there done that if you’re familiar with a company by the name of RockAuto look up your transmission on your truck and see if they offer one if not there is a company in Milwaukee Wisconsin the build ze transmission and has branches all over the United States are located at 2727 27th Street South in Milwaukee Wisconsin put a new transmission in my vehicle total cost with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty on it was $2,500 I’ve got four hundred thousand miles on the truck and it runs perfect pH # 414-645-7000. Tell them Floyd Palmquist sent you.
400000 miles??
I’m having issues now w/ my 2016 GMC Sierra, same problems. Transmission is now out and needs replacement. I feel stuck as well since we took it in several times this past year for similar issues and now it’s my financial responsibility, I was advised that it would have been covered under powertrain however we are 2,000 miles out of warranty even though online via GMC website says powertrain is good through Sept 2021 or 160000 miles…might double check your powertrain warranty?
I just picked my 2018 Silverado LTZ up from a local dealer,. Took it in because at 28,000 the front brake pads and rotors are shot due to weird wear and it failed inspection. Chevy refuses to do anything because it’s a “wear item”…well, d’uh. But this isn’t normal wear and tear, the pads on the inside of the rotor are not contacting their full width. They said it did that because of rust. Helllooo…it’s rusting around the outer portions of the rotor face because the pads aren’t contacting the full width. Service manager said he wouldn’t push the issue. I said the rears are doing the same, except on the outside. He tried to tell me the rears don’t contact across the full width so they will do that. I then took him to the other side where the rear pads ARE contacting full width like they should and asked him to explain that. Of course, he had no answer. This isn’t my first rodeo, pardner. I’ve never, in my life, had a brand new vehicle eat up rotors and pads in less than 30,000 miles. If I were racing the thing or towing heavy trailers every day, then maybe, but I don’t. I have a 6×8 utility trailer that I’ve towed a few times in 2.5 years and the heaviest thing it’s carried was an empty tool box lower roller unit (460 lbs).
Anyway, while the truck was there, I told him the transmission was clunky, often had a harsh downshift from 2nd into 1st gear when slowing and it sometimes, after sitting, when starting up the transmission would surge and jerk the truck. I know about the flush TSB. They didn’t even do the TSB!! He says they plugged it up to the computer and aren’t seeing the “harmonics issues”, so they won’t even do the tsb.
This is my first chevy in 20 years and I’m sad to say, it will be my last.
My friend I had the same issues with my brakes on my 2017 HC. Dealer replaced 2 sets of rotors under warranty because they warped and like yourself no towing or hauling. I’m on 3rd set this time Powerstop Z36 and it just turned 40,000 kms. I love the truck but some stuff is garbage. I know this a transmission forum but just wanted to put my 2 cents in. Knock on wood no real issues with transmission yet.
Ive been lucky.. only hard shift a few times.. had the flush….41k miles but as soon as the f250 2021 comes out im trading 2015 silverado in…. although GM makes the new 10speed transmission had some issues with Ford.. Im dumping the silverado
I have a 2019 Silverado purchased a year ago. I still have problems with the rough and lurching 8 speed transmission. I took it to the shop 3 or 4 times and they said:
1. GM says it’s normal. Only it’s an issue when vibrating not jerk/lurching
2. They do a transmission “relearn” (they preformed this but not change)
3. Dealer said the new tranny oil is already done at the time of truck purchase. I asked if they can flush again, GM said no. (of course only if I pay for it)
It’s been very frustrating and GM lost my loyalty.
It’s unfortunate but they don’t care.
I understand the frustration, and I’ll try to help. First, it sounds like you should maybe try a new dealer. There’s good and bad dealers of every brand out there. I don’t think the fluid is the issue though. How many times could one flush, and not see a difference? That is, if they changed the fluid, they used the right kind, and they’ve used the right amount. If they changed the fluid with right type and quantity, we can probably eliminate that one as the issue. The fluid change was more often than not recommended as a remedy to the torque converter shudder(vibration), than for shifting, although there’s a chance of improvement, but probably not much. There are two options though. One, you could try the Range device. That disables either Active Fuel Management in the older trucks, or Dynamic Fuel Management on the 2019+ trucks. People have noticed that when either of the two technologies shutdown cylinders, it can affect the shifting feel. They plugged the device in which kept the engine an 8 cylinder, and they noticed slightly better shifting. You unplug the device, the vehicle returns to normal. The other option is Trifecta, or a different tune. If you went that route, I’d still keep an eye on everything, however it should be ok in theory, however it’s to say if that dealer did in fact change the fluid. There’s a bunch of Range reviews on YouTube, however either of those two are the best way to remedy the vehicle, because the dealer won’t di anything different for now, because engineering hasn’t found anything different. I’d probably try a different dealer, just to see what they say. If they say everything as is is normal, then I’d try Range, if not a tune, or a DIY tune like Trifecta. I’m not sure about other dealers, however with mine, they’ll let you know for sure, if something is wrong, or if they find nothing wrong. I just know there’s good and bad dealers, just like everything else in the world. I’d say though, it’s safe to say, that fluid more than likely won’t change it much, based on everything I’ve seen on here.
Thanks for the comments! I will look into the seeing a transmission service place or getting a tuner.
No problem. If everything checks out good, then it’s probably just the way they have everything calibrated, which a tuner will change that. The Range device helps, however you probably see bigger results with a tune.
Dane can you unpack what a “range” device does? where to purchase?
I have read about the TRifecta tuner here and I am considering it.
I just had my transmission flushed and they did some kind of update on the TCM. they said my transmission now needs to relearn how I drive it.
it’s already better than it was…
still, I am want to look at the lubegard additive that has been recommended here…in addition to a tuner.
I can still feel things around 2nd gear.
turning off the fuel management system, I am not familiar how to do it.
thanks
sTeve
By default the engines either have Active Fuel Management, or Dynamic Fuel Management depending on year. If it’s 2019+, it has Dynamic Fuel Management especially if it’s the new Silverado/Sierra/ 2021 SUVs. Both of those technologies use cylinder deactivation. You’ll see it in action as it’ll usually say you’re in V4 mode or indicate that it’s regular mode. AFM shuts down the same cylinders, while DFM shuts down random cylinders, all the way down to one cylinder depending on situation. Range is a device that you plug into the OBD2 port(where you scan for codes)on the vehicle. Somehow once you plug it in, turns all of that nonsense off, so the vehicle stays with all cylinders running. It’s more of a temporary process, as if you remove it, it reactivates everything. If you have a Canyon, Camaro, Colorado, etc. with a V6, those engines have AFM. The earlier Colorado/Canyons do not have AFM though, as far as I know. I think it’s 2017 or 2018 and up. You can get Range from Rangetechnology.com, and alternatively you can get them from other sites including Amazon. If you go that route, I’d still use the Range website to make sure you get the right device.
I have a 2018 Sierra 1500. Bought used in June 2020 with 19000 mi. Now has 25000. Was at the dealer about a month and a half ago for the flush and re programming. Is in the shop again for possible valve body and torque converter replacement. I noticed a 2-3 mpg loss after the flush.
I’m experiencing rough shifting up/down in between the lower gears. Mostly notice it from parked or stopped. Also coasting at a slow speed down hill. Feels like I the truck finally catches gear and it throws itself forward. I love the truck so hopefully it can get fixed.
Correct, fluid flush will not resolve hard shifts. Hard shifting is a combination of AFM, factory shift points and [per my testing] tranny temp.
Disabling AFM makes a huge difference (I’ve experienced zero hard shifts since). You can do this via Range plug-in device or aftermarket tune.
Getting an aftermarket tune [like Trifecta] will improve shifting by moving the shift points. That resolved my 2-1-2 and 2-3-2 rapid shifts under low acceleration.
GM isn’t going to disable AFM because that is how they get EPA mileage rating. We are stuck with aftermarket fixes for bad shifting … at least in my opinion. I went Trifecta route because it was easier than working with a local tuner shop. There are other options (Diablo), but don’t bother with BullyDog as their built-in tunes do not disable AFM or change shift points … you have to go to a tuner shop for those customizations.
GM is correct that the flush will not solve the hard shifts. It was developed to fix the other issue with shuddering/vibration. It seems with the way GM mapped/tuned this transmission it is prone to the jerky shifting. Some say and even swear the Trifecta tune (third party 400 dollars) will reduce or eliminate this issue. You can order this tune and perform it yourself. Many options to it. But it will remap the transmission and should help. You can also put it back to factory settings if you need to do warranty work. Back in 2019 I had pre ordered a Colorado (1K down) and then days later heard about all this 8 speed trans issues. At that time they were using the new trans fluid only for those experiencing the issues but they had not yet put it into new production. I had intercepted internal memo’s to dealers about the issues and the new fluid. I went to my GM at the dealer and showed him that and demanded that my truck that had not been built yet have the the new fluid. At that time they said they couldn’t. Amazingly his connection back east admitted that 20 percent of production had issues. After that I wanted out of my order and asked for my money back. And he did which I am still very grateful for. I ended up with a Frontier Pro 4X and couldn’t be happier with that purchase. The polar opposite of GM. About the most reliable power-train ever made (VQ 40 4.0 liter and 5 speed auto).
This TSB says it goes up to a 2018 Silverado. But I feel like I am having this exact issue in my 2019 Silverado. Only has about 3k on it. TSB says silverados manufactured after like March would already have the new fluid. Anyone with the new body style silverados notice these issues. This morning my truck shifting from 1st to 2nd had what felt like it was shifting to 2nd but not right away if that makes since. It just stalled almost shifting. But not the engine stalling. Just the shift. Also I notice around 47 mph and with the truck completely shifted into the last gear it starts to feel like something is vibrating if I let off the gas or accelerate it stops. Anyone else with these issues?
Do you have the 8 speed in your 2019?
Because I’m seeing lots of complaints on those too. 10 speed seems to be better though time will tell.
I have that same issue with my 2018 GMC Canyon. It has 17,000 miles and started doing it a few weeks ago. I would be just lightly pressing the accelerator and getting up speed and all of a sudden my whole truck is vibrating. If I let off it would stop. I thought it was the road or my tires at first but no matter where I was it would do it. It’s going back to the dealership tomorrow. Hopefully the New oil will fix it.
Word for word what happened to me. You will get a fluid flush, then it will come back quickly, then they will say it’s normal and give you a pitty fluid flush and say drive for 1000 miles.
Ive done 3 fluid changes and still having the same problem
I have a 2019 silverado and I don’t have the shudder but I have tranny slips and hard shiftiing. Sometimes when shifting from Reverse to Drive it will slam in gear. The guy at the dealer said it was normal. Thats B.S. I’m about to trade this for a Ford.
I had a 2014 Silverado with a 6 speed that would bang into gear when shifting into reverse. I had it in the shop several times and was told the banging was normal. So it’s not just an 8 speed trans problem. Automatic transmissions have been around a long, long time. You would think that they could get it right by now. I have always been a GM guy but after all of my transmission problems I’m phasing them out. I already traded the Silverado on a Ram. The Cadillac is next.
Perhaps there was an issue with the 6speed back then, however it’s fine now as far as I’ve heard. Plus the trucks at my work are 2017s, and they don’t have an issue. These trucks go through it every day, 6 days a week. They’re definitely not treated like a personal vehicle. They take abuse. The company I work for hardly believes in oil changes, so you know they’re not going to believe in transmission maintenance. We did have to get one rebuilt at 60,000 miles, which I’d still say is pretty good for what they go through. These trucks aren’t used to get groceries, they’re put to work. During the whole thing, the truck was still driven before we took it in, so if it was just taken in when it first started acting up, perhaps it wouldn’t have had to be rebuilt. Anyway with one of our local dealers, we dropped it off on a Friday, their transmission tech diagnosed it, started taking it apart that Monday, it was ready on that Tuesday afternoon, and we picked it up that Wednesday morning. That was a few weeks ago. So far, everything is good. The other two 1500s are good, no problems, except for one might need new seals eventually on the engine, unless the last place we took it to didn’t put oil in it. They usually take them to Meineke, but the dealer that rebuilt the transmission said it was pretty low on oil. That would be a huge gap in oil change intervals. Our gas 2500s are doing good as well, however, they tow heavy machines. Now if the 10 speeds are having issues, that’s a GM and Ford issue. As far as I’ve heard Ford has issues with the 10 Speed also.
Have a 2019 silverado lt and have the same issue slamming into gear when from revers to drive and sometimes shifts then slips for a few seconds then go s into gear. When down shifting it is very noticeable and if roads are slick it will cause truck to slide Only have 3900 miles on it had fluid flushed drove 500 miles still same issues. As usual GM will do anything not to fix the real issue. Will now be going in to get new torque converter if that doe not fix it by GM and will get rid of chevy forever and have to go somewhere else.
GM is going to lose a lot of loyal customers because of these transmissions.
They lost me. And this was just my first GM vehicle. Never again.
B. new 2015 GMC Denali 1500. after 40,000 same annoying transmission and vibration. did the flush – useless. out of pocket lots of money. My first and was my last GMC.. never again.
I have a 2020 1500 6.2 RST 10 speed and after 786 miles its in the shop for the same issue.Gm Code shows valve body as of now.I asked them to flush the entire tranny after dropping the pan and was told “GM doesnt recommend it,so we cant do it”.The torque converter will still have the old fluid in it,so i guess i’ll be back in 1,000 miles for that issue as well.Than around maybe 20k trashing the tranny. So glad i paid almost 60k for a truck i got to drive for 1 month.
It’s a really crappy situation. As posted earlier I have a 2018 Cadillac with 8speed transmission problems and a 2016 Corvette that just started doing the shuttering. The flush helped the Corvette so far but didn’t help the Cadillac at all. With as many problems as I have read about in the various GM vehicles, it’s really hard to believe that GM can’t be made to recall and repair the faulty transmissions. A person’s automobile is typically their second largest purchase after their house. People have a lot of money invested in their cars and they should be assured that they will operate correctly and last for a long time. It almost seems criminal that GM gets away with this.

2017 Colorado. Had my transmission flushed 3 times and torque converter replaced. Still have problems. Left it at dealership for 3 days, they could not replicate the problem I’m having. Was told they can’t fix a problem they can’t feel. Left the dealership and it started shuttering 100 yds down the road. My wife and friends keep asking when they are going to fix it. I tell them fix what. I’m really disappointed in this truck
ALWAYS have the service manager ride with you or drive with you… nonsense when they say they can’t replicate. I had a 17 Colorado….. have had the same stuff done as you. The last time I left it at the dealership after having the SM drive it with me said the fluid needed to be changed for a 4th time…. 27k miles…. I was assured the SM drove it for the weekend had zero problems….. RIGHT! Got in it and could tell before even leaving their parking lot that it was exactly the same…. drove over to the new side and traded it in that day. I kept my eye on it on the used lot…. they sold it for 30k and nothing was posted or said about any prior issues. Sold to some poor unexpecting person. My husband HAD a 17 z71 Silverado…. did you know the Silverado and my Colorado have the same transmission…. it’s true! He had every issue I had so that ones gone too! Chevrolet cannot fix the problem. They just keep stringing us along till you trade it off. You have the right to ask the SM to ride with you…. it’s his job
Had SM ride with me in my 2017 Sierra….said it was the way I was driving…apparently after 50 years of driving, I don’t know how to drive anymore….I’ve been very persistent with them and put my truck back in shop on August 4th and they finally decided to install new transmission….that’s been 11 weeks I’ve been without my truck now….they say they can’t get parts….
What percentage have this problem? I have a 2018 Silverado 6.2L with the Max Tow and I have not noticed anything except what I thought was a flawless transmission. It has almost 15,000 miles and I have made several road trips pulling a medium weight travel trailer.
I only heard about the problem when my dad showed me a newspaper article mentioning the 8 spd problem, so I googled and found this site.
GM fan my whole life, but this Yukon I bought has given me a run for my money. I have been in the Quick Lube business for 15 years and just recently stepped out last year. I bought my Yukon with 45k miles and have put about 10k on it since I’ve owned it. Performance and handling like no other, hands down, best on the market. Looks are great it feels great and sounds great, especially because I opted for the 6.2L. The transmission started acting a little funny about 58k and I didn’t mind it too much attention. But, by the time I got to 61k, it was shuttering and slipping, particularly in 2nd gear. I called the dealer and asked them, they had no idea that these transmissions had any issues. Oh well, what do you expect from a dealer. I looked on this forum to see what was going on and I saw the update about the fluid. We all have our preferred brand, but being in the industry for so many years, you learn the politics and quirks of all of them.
Mainly, when new specs it something that is already covered by an oil and manufacturers want to buy rights. The manufacturer that has been first in spec categories, with every manufacturer, is Amsoil. Don’t get me wrong, they have had their quirks, but they are minimal compared to the rest. I’m don’t have a biased opinion when it comes to oil anymore, but I knew I wanted my truck fixed. On the way to the shop it was slipping and shuttering. In my 15 years of experience I haven’t seen any vehicle have trans problems get it flushed and it fixed everything. Trans problems + Trans Fluid Exchange(TTECH)= 99% disaster, go ahead and call a tow truck. But I’m thinking at the same time I gotta do something because I’m not going to put my wife and kids in this truck and send them down I-4 at 80 mph to go to Disney and the trans dies. So I said let’s see if this works.
POINT is Amsoil SIGNATURE SERIES LV fixed my trans 100%. It has to be the one with the Blue Cap. It is a high dollar flush and finding a shop that inventories Amsoil is difficult too. It has been 1 month since my flush. AMERICAN LUBE EXPRESS, on Havendale, in Auburndale, FL, can take care of you.
Good luck
I’m in Winter Haven FL.
I had my 2017 Silverado 6.2L 8 speed in for the fluid change and initially, it was much better, but not fully cured. After about 6 weeks it’s right back where it was prior to the fluid swap. I’ve never had the shudder everyone is talking about. Mine shifts extremely hard from 1-2 and 2-1. It’s got a mind of its own and when it’s happening it’s terrible and consistent, but it’s not all the time so it’s really hard to replicate for the dealer. If I run the trans in tow/haul it works perfectly. I honestly think they should spend some time and adjust the shift points. I really believe it would help, but I’m sure it’s a fuel mileage concern. If there was an aftermarket tuner I would be all over it to help correct this issue. I’m about ready to sell/trade for a new truck…
For what it’s worth. I had the fluid replaced and eventually the torque converter replaced in my 2017 6.2 with the 8 speed. I had hard shifts and vibration/shutter problems. Only had 20,000 miles on it. I just gave up last week and traded for a new high country 6.2 with the 10 speed. It stickered for $65k and I paid $46k brand new. Hope the 10 speed is better. So far it’s smooth as hell.
I deleted AFM with Range it seemed to of helped with rough shifting crossing fingers. Have a 17 High Country 6.2L also swapped fluid a year ago with Amsoil ATF
I am now experiencing the truck decelerating when I let off on the accelerator. It’s like the brakes are dragging. I shift to neutral and it goes away. I paid 65K for this Denali that is a beautiful truck and the transmission is banging and shuddering and very slow shifting from reverse to forward and forward to reverse. GM, step it up and address this issue!!!! I have had it in the dealership 4 times, They changed the oil, reprogrammed it and told there was nothing more they can do. I am pissed!!!
I deleted AFM with Range and as odd as this sounds the clunking stopped shortly after and never returned knock on wood. Have a 17 High Country 6.2L
I have a 2018 Canyon and have the same problem at 17k miles. These trucks are nice but expensive and, like you, I’m really frustrated with these vehicles. When I spend this much money I want it to work. Who wants to go on a vacation and worry about transmission problems?
This was recommended for the eight speed transmissions, six and eight cylinders, but nothing was recommended for the 4 cylinder turbo with 6 speed automatic. My 2014 ATS 2.0 liter Turbo automatic was stuttering between 1500 and 2000 rpms. At all gears, and could be avoided by manually shifting to stay out of that range. At 89800 miles, there was no warranty and a torque converter was quoted at $2800. I told the dealer rep that we should try changing the transmission oil as was done in the bigger engines. And damn it, it worked! As soon as I left the dealership, there was no stuttering.
As it should. The problem has always been with the 8 speed. Issue exists with Caddilacs, Corvettes, Colorados, full size trucks, camaros etc.
My 19 Sierra 4cyl 8spd is about to go back to the shop for the 4th time. They’ve replaced valve body and fluid on my first and second trip in. Then the third trip in they drove it and sai nothing was wrong with it. I picked my truck up and drive about 6 miles and my son asked why my the truck was pulsing while going up an incline.
Even with the oil swap, valve body replaced I still have a new truck that was built by unskilled labor for a worthless ass company. I now have 10,200 miles on my truck and the computer said I have 7% of my front brakes left… At 10k miles? when funding allows i send. this one down the river and go foreign.
first new vehicle purchase and i couldnt feel more let down.
GM. go fuc|{ yourself. you know what you are doing isnt right but you continue. your day will come.
2019, new body Silvarado 1500LT. 8 speed.
Could feel shift to drive or reverse from park, my old 2016 6 speed you could not. Chalked it up to….its a brand new truck, all good. Now at 25000 miles. It in the dealer for loud wine, when accelerator is depressed, any gear even park, told it’s the recirculating pump.
Since it’s at dealer now, I documented the tranny shift issues, also shuddering when I do 3 point turn in heavy traffic conditions where you need to shift quickly. I have been in a rental for a week, dealer has no solution yet.
Update……dealer says whine was from a pully, not tranny recirculation pump like they assumed. The whining has stopped. as for hard shifting and shuddering, they said no codes, and tech could not simulate problems, they chalked it up to tranny is a learning/adaptive trans. Shifts from park can still be felt, at least its documented at dealer now. The rental I had was a 2019 old body with the 6 speed trans, the week I drove it the trans was perfect, shifts from park to drive or reverse were smooth as butter.
I have a 2017 Silverado, 5.3L 8 speed trans with E-assist. Experiencing the same issues, hard shifting from 1-2 and 2-1. It has even auto stopped on me in traffic when I was going about 3mph, when it came back on it shot up to 2000rpms and lunged forward! I took it to the dealership at 43,289 miles and they can’t do anything other than a ‘fast learn’ on the trans. Haven’t driven it more than 150 miles and when on a hill I shifted into reverse and I went forward instead. Shifted into drive with a loud clunk and I had no power or power steering. Got to a safe spot and turned the truck off. When I turned it back on it was ‘ok’ but it didn’t have v-8 power at all. Not a happy camper at all. Why won’t they fix the issue, obviously we aren’t lying!
2017 Canyon. Have experienced the Shudder problem. Dealer flushed and put in special fluid. Much better now but still not as it should be. Dealer is going to replace Valvebody? I hope GMC stands behind their product!!!
I have a 2015 gmc denali with the same shutter problem. I have had the fluid flushed 3 times. Amesbury chevy in Mass. looked at it. they claimed it was the torque converter. I left The dealer ship to get another opinion. The next day the truck would not shift would just wined. I had it towed to a transmission shop. They flushed the fluid. would run but still heavy shutter. I had the torgue converter replaced with a new one. I’ve had my truck back for 3 days know and the shutter is back i am out of pocket thousands at this point and beyond pissed off with this issue.
From the reads from owners the only fix when it gets as bad as yours is a new transmission. Also, you should have used the new T-mobile fluid that came out in beginning of year with the new bosch transflo machine to apply it since that will insure no moisture gets into it. Moisture is the culprit here. Are you out of warranty now? That’s going to be a issue starting with the 15’s now. The fluid change is so complex and takes about 3 hours. Your looking at about 700 dollars out of pocket. The 8 speed is a joke. To late to lemon law your issue. Also see if your in a state that is on the class action. If so, get yourself added on the list. If you really want to get under their skin write a detailed statement and make a complaint on GMC’s BBB web site. That can go along ways. I’ve gotten thousands back in good will over the years. OEM’s don’t like bad marks on their BBB site. And when they respond which I guaranteed they will stress over and over that you know they had many issues over 5 years and multiple TSB updates. Tell them you have copies of that (there easy to find on the Colorado forums) and that you at least should be entitled to a complete flush at the dealer with the new fluid/mobile one. Also don’t drive it too much when its shuttering. It will glaze your torque convertor and it will break again. Good luck.
Just started to get the shutter about 45,000 miles after I parked the truck because my company gave me a company truck to drive now when I drive it at a constant speed 50 to 60 holding steady I get a shutter feels like driving over rumble strips on the freeway with cruise control set at 75 no issues yet I’m thinking about taking it in next weekend
Take it to Tasca in Woonsocket RI. They fixed mine, no more shudder. Hurd GMC in Johnston RI had it three times. First Fluid flush, second torque converter changed, third did nothing. Third time they had it for a month. When I picked up my truck from Tasca the service writer said the mechanic said the fluid in the transmission was brown, indicating to me that Hurd did not change the fluid and probably not the torque converter either. The new fluid is supposed to be red. Most shops are probably not changing it because it is so expensive.
My 2019 would change in and out of overdrive. Then it started almost like downshift between second and third shift change. It started off just in the morning. I had the fluid changed it helped the overdrive problem, but now the had down shifting an hard up shifting is becoming more common. Took it into the dealership and was given a notice from GM that the hard up and down shifting was normal. This will be my last GM product.

So I had my transmission replaced on my 17 Silverado. I have to say that it is much better than it was at 47,000kms. I do still notice the “bump shifts” from time to time, but nothing like it used to. I drove it in -25 degree weather today and it shifted almost normal! It’s great that I have a transmission that operates much better, but now I wonder how long it will continue to shift so well?
I had the same shutter issues with my 17..changed fluid, updated computer, replaced torque converter and none of it worked..GM eventually told me to pound said and “we cant replicate the problem”. I sold the POS. Now I bought a 2020 high country 6.2l with the 10 speed trans and after 1k miles this damn thing does it too. Should not have these issued on a 72k truck that’s brand new..
I have a 2017 Sierra with 20,000 miles and 8 speed transmission….had it in dealer 4 times now, and hard shift between 1st and 2nd is still there….this last time valve body was changed out and no good outcome….service manager said they couldn’t get problem to duplicate, so took him for a drive and showed him hard shift at low rpm….was told it is normal and evidently I don’t know how to drive anymore….after 50 years of driving, never had vehicle do this….now it’s my fault…bullsh#t GMC….
2017 Sierra 1500 with the harsh up and down shift issues. Have had the fluid flush and upgrade in October. Helped for maybe 1000 miles, then harsh conditions returned. Going back to the dealer tomorrow. When i was talking to the service advisor about the glazed converter, he acted like i was dumb and he had never heard of it. I spoke with a friend who is a tech at a dealership in Texas (i am in Oklahoma), and he said what many on here have repeated – the converter change resolves most, but at the core of the issue, this isn’t a great, smooth transmission. But some of the behavior is downright dangerous. Mine has 52000 miles and i can’t wait until i can sell it. Wish i still had my 2015 with a six speed….
I bought a brand new 2019 Chevy Colorado from the dealership in Cape Girardeau Missouri it had 0 miles on it Within the first 102 miles it started shifting hard and shuttering I took it to the dealer they could find nothing wrong and they flush the system it stopped the shattering but not the hard shifting I am now at 5200 miles it still does the hard shifting took it back to the dealership for the fourth time they said they can’t Find anything wrong with it I don’t know what to do next
This is whats troubling for me. When did you buy your Truck? They have been putting the new fluid at the plant on new production for most of this year. Yet I keep hearing about owners saying this does not always fix the transmission. Sometimes a complete trans replacement will fix the ones that seem to have terminal issues. Document your case for lemon law. Add yourself to the class action is your in one of those states. But from what i’ve seen, some cases are so bad only a replacement seems to fix the issue. GM is pushing back. Many have swore off the brand forever.
That is frustrating. My 2018 Canyon just started shuttering a few weeks ago. 17,000 miles I’m taking it back to dealership tomorrow. I hope I don’t hear those same BS comments from them.
