We here at GM Authority pride ourselves on noticing the details, the little things that other automotive outlets simply gloss over and leave out. That’s what makes the difference – attention to detail. The same can be said of the new 2020 Cadillac XT6… at least when it comes to the rear cupholders, that is.
Cadillac recently invited us to drive the all-new 2020 Cadillac XT6 in Washington D.C., during which time we tested the new “midsize plus” three-row crossover in a variety of capacities. And during our examination of the cabin, we noticed an interesting detail about the cupholders in the second row. Yes, we are, in fact, writing about cupholders, but read on – because details like these are important.
Essentially, the cupholders slide out from the front center console (the one located between the two front two seats). That’s nothing special. But what is special is that the cupholders slide on a set of metal rails. Unlike a cheap plastic rail and slider, these metal bits offer a smoother, more precise operation and solid feel not often found in such a “minor” feature as a cupholder. In fact, that’s something that 2020 Cadillac XT6 designers and engineers specifically intended and highlighted.
In addition to a pair of cupholders, the sliding tray also includes a deep storage bin located ahead of cupholders, creating a perfect spot to drop a smartphone, sunglasses, or something else to leave in the car while keeping it out of sight.
Similarly to the way in which it opens, the rear cupholders in the 2020 Cadillac XT6 close back into the front console with a solid “clunk,” providing a feeling we’d describe as similar to a high-end piece of furniture.
All told, we really like these rear cupholders on the XT6. We’d even say they are the best cupholders we’ve ever tried, at least in a vehicle attainable by folks who don’t have their own yacht docked in their backyard.
Indeed, this is the sort of detail we like to see and appreciate in a Cadillac, and it does well to differentiate the Cadillac XT6 from other vehicles riding on the GM C1 vehicle platform.
Of course, there’s plenty more to discuss about Cadillac’s newest crossover beyond the fantastic rear cupholders, so stick around, because we have further info coming soon. In the meantime, subscribe to GM Authority for more Cadillac XT6 news, Cadillac news and around-the-clock GM news coverage.

Yay, they are metal, but every Class A Surface is cheap looking! No deep cup holder to hold a large drink from turning over when going around a curve, no grippy material to grip the cup, the flat metal disks in the cupholder have no finishing elements (Chamfered edge, crowning of the surface, or engraving). The bin is not flocked to reduce rattles, and the excessive front lip design increases the likelihood that someone will step or drop something on the cupholder and apply even more torque to those metal tracks bending them! The back of GM’s center consoles is rarely given 1/3 the attention it deserves and needs. This looks like it was busy work for an intern, not a sweated detail!
Then again, I once genuinely told a teacher (a GM Designer too actually) that i deserved a “C” because I hadn’t worked as hard as I should have. Then again, I spent an hour talking to a GM rep about how bad the back of the center console in the Lucerne was…which was a product my teacher was responsible for!
Anyone play sports ? You do recall what you put in your cup holder ? I hold my beer in my hand so I don’t spill in my cup holder. Lol new Hypercar slower than my Camaro ZL1,
The only thing GM sweats is their short term stock price… the figures used to value their bonuses…
That’s what I’ve concluded…
Cadillac use to be the best of GM. Shitier looking. And generic style. So talk about a cup holder?
Those little pieces of metal on the sides of a otherwise all-plastic cupholder tray, no matter how smooth they might be, are not going to be enough to outgun the hot rod Lincoln about to be unleashed from Dearborn. Cadillac is seriously outgunned in this category.
The hybrid version of Lincoln’s shiny new RWD Aviator is reportedly going to produce 494 hp and 630 pound-feet of torque and is expected to hit 60 mph somewhere between 4 and 5 seconds. Meanwhile the “first ever” XT6 makes do with only the ubiquitous 3.6 V-6 with 310 hp and 271 pound-feet of torque on tap and strapped sideways into yet another Lambda (C1XX) variant. Motor Trend estimates it hits 60 in a bit less than 8 seconds.
It might be argued that SUV buyers won’t care about speed but the way Lincoln has outdone Cadillac under the hood and in the performance department is merely an example of how much better the Ford product is on all fronts. It will be immediately evident to anyone who comparison shops both products. And, of course, the Lincoln has nice cupholders too.
After a certain price point, people WILL expect a certain degree of performance in their vehicle. Regardless of body style.
If only families were taking their Aviators to the Nurburgring track. Lol. Since when is over 300 horsepower not enough for a vehicle of the Cadillac XT6’s size? Remember the same 3.6L V6 effortlessly moves the larger Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse like nothing. Smh. You people sound so ridiculous. You’re number queens, the HP & torque numbers on the paper are what excite you not the actual driving experience. Please come back to reality, sir. These are FAR from performance vehicles and, unlike the Lincoln Aviator, the Cadillac XT6 does not need 600 lb ft. of torque to be competitive in its segment. Furthermore, Lincoln’s performance in general certainly ISN’T the argument that you want to make with Cadillac. Hmph!
Lincoln can’t even manage to dethrone the current GMC and Cadillac SUVs yet you’re here boasting about the Lincoln Aviator’s hybrid engine option and it being RWD biased. My goodness! Lol. The CD6 platform underpinning the Aviator is nothing spectacular. Anyone can put a crossover on a RWD platform, attach a hybrid motor, some cute multi-adjustable 30-way front seats and call it a game changer. Truth is for the price the Aviator is nothing astounding either. There’s nothing innovative about it. Cadillac has several RWD platforms and turbo V6 engines they could’ve used IF chasing behind Lincoln was their forte and the companies ultimate goal. I don’t know of ANY brands that dance to Lincoln’s beat…So why on earth would Cadillac forget about Lexus and then suddenly be concerned with what the Aviator was offering? That makes zero sense. Let’s be realistic here. The Lincoln Aviator is more of a threat to it’s own lineup than it is to Cadillac’s.
The Ford Explorer ST will hurt Lincoln Aviator sales for many reasons but mainly because Lincoln priced the Aviator way outside of it’s market value. The Aviator will also cannibalize Lincoln Navigator sales. GM is smarter than Ford. Cadillac isn’t gonna have that issue with the 2020 XT6 and 2021 Escalade. Two entirely different customers, fulfilling essentially the same or very similar segments in two completely different ways. Lincoln should’ve used some of that money they used on their engine choices and features and put it towards improving their interior build quality. Just from videos on YouTube you can see the poor attention to detail in certain areas with the Lincoln like the sloppy B-pillars where the roof and pillar meet inside behind the driver and front passenger doors. That’s poor fit and finish you won’t see in the Cadillac XT6.
Lincoln doesn’t offer a naturally aspirated V6 or V8. That’s what Ford fails to realize…not everyone wants a eco-boosted, dual-turbocharged, hybrid concoction of an engine as a daily driver neither do we want to pay $90,000 in order to deal with it. A lot of people still prefer reliable, refined, adequately powered, naturally aspirated engines. You can’t get that with Lincoln.
WOW… “Fantastic Cup Holders” going to differentiate the XT6 from other SUVs..!!
Right…. While Lincoln annouces the awesome new Aviator will produce 400 HP and 415 ft-lbs torque and the Grand Touring produces a stunning. 494 HP and. 630 ft-lbs torque!!!
Thats what a luxury buyer should be concerned with… Effortless smooth acceleration from Lincoln…!!! Caddy… Just a stupid cup hokder!
Yes, a suburban mom will need 630 ft/tq for Walmart….
Yes I get it Caddy need an performance CUV but the XT6 isn’t an performance CUV, it will sell perfect to it’s audience.
What will the Ford failboys say for the Blackwing Escalade vs the V6 only Navigator?.
They don’t get it. These idiots that are trolling around everything Cadillac boasting about the Aviators torque numbers are brainless. It will not sell better than the Cadillac XT6 and Lexus RX because these vehicles were going for reliable and refined naturally aspirated V6 engines. Not the race to who can put out the highest output of horsepower and torque. There’s even an idiot in these comments comparing 0-60 times! Lol. Ford fanboys are delusional as hell. NO ONE will be spending an extra $20,000 for a Lincoln Aviator because of it’s 0-60 time especially when you can buy the Explorer ST for $35,000 less.
Alex, come and save the day!
I will wait for the rumored higher output Cadillacs !!
But I’m sure this great metal slide will help sell a ton of this Chevrolet / Cadillac.
Well I seen and test drove XT6. Instead I bought a Premier Traverse. Love it. I couldn’t afford the price but I would have bought it in a New York second.
For you trolls and haters, the article is making a point of 1 insignificant point that will reveal the many new features that set it apart…doh…
While vacationing in Pikes Peck over the weekend, I actually felt bad for Navigator owner waiting for a tow around elevation 13k feet.
The only tow of the day. It’s a big baby Huey that marketing spinned its might and space but failed to talk about its build quality.
Maybe he should of taken the Ford van tour ride with its N/A v6 instead…maybe he could have seen 16k feet where others that made it and taken pictures.
IMO, focus on the mid size as other foreign mfgrs are doing…
How nice; a flashy cup holder. It can hold your drink while you wait for the tow truck because you are broken-down on the roadway due to Cadillac’s terrible quality and history of very poor service. Scrap the cup holders. Give me a quality product from GM that I can drive for 30 days without being in the repair shop. For that, Mary and the good-old-boys get a bonus; go figure !!!
