This week, Kennewick, Washington police received a call from a man who claimed his 1992 Chevrolet truck had been stolen from a parking lot.
The story then took an unexpected turn when they questioned the caller and discovered the only reason he was in the area was to steal from a business located across the street from where he had parked his truck.
Security camera footage reviewed by Kennewick Police and released by the force through its Facebook page shows a man passing the red Chevrolet on his bike. According to ABC, the man noticed the keys to the truck had been left on the driver’s seat, so he loaded his bike in the bed before getting in and driving off.
The security camera footage shows the 911 caller, William Kelley, pursue the truck thief on foot and throw a large object at the vehicle, but he’s too late.
The real kicker here is that that Kelley is behind bars for burglary (he also had an outstanding warrant), while the truck thief is still out there, presumably enjoying a “new to them” 1992 Chevy with a truck cap and probably a rather fresh-looking dent in the right side, too.
Kennewick Police are asking for any information related to the theft and are advising local residents to be on the lookout for the stolen Chevrolet. The truck was stolen in the early hours of Sunday morning, with Kelley placing the call to 911 around 6 a.m.
