The GM Authority Take
The fact that the GMC Terrain was among the only seven vehicles in its segment to see sales volume rise is a nice reassurance following a lackluster performance in the first quarter of 2019. What’s more, the Terrain’s corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Equinox (see Chevrolet Equinox sales) – also saw sales rise during the quarter.
Combined, the two GM crossovers vehicles sold over 100,000 units and accounted for 15 percent segment share. While the numbers are impressive, they’re still outsold by the Toyota RAV4, which saw sales rise 9 percent to an impressive 116,790 units, enabling the vehicle to account for a 16 percent segment share.
Going forward, we expect GMC Terrain sales to remain strong so long as The General can continue meeting supply. The crossover is seeing the deletion of the turbo-diesel engine for the 2020 model year, resulting in the loss of a shift at the GM San Luis Potosi plant where it’s made.

About GMC Terrain
The GMC Terrain is a compact crossover that currently is GMC's smallest crossover slotting below the midsize GMC Acadia.
The first-generation Terrain ran from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. The vehicle was a "tweeter" model that straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The second-generation Terrain was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its predecessor, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.
The second-generation, 2018 and newer Terrain features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the first-gen model. As a result, the new Terrain gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.
The 2019 model year Terrain sees one new color, various technology updates such as the addition of full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop/Go, Front Pedestrian Braking, HD Rear Vision Camera, and HD Surround Vision, as well as the introduction of various packages, including the Terrain Black Edition.
The second-generation GMC Terrain is built by GM Mexico at the GM San Luis Potosi factory.

Does anyone else feel that the Terrain sales would be higher if the design was a little more mainstream? Or would that hurt? I don’t know, but I know that I like the Equinox better.
But my main comment is about the Toyota Rav 4 being up 9%. Let’s remember that the Rav is all new this year and every one of the Toyota buying sheep will be buying one to replace their current Rav 4 or the Corolla they’ve had for the past 3 years. Being at a Mazda/Volvo store, I have a lot of people come in buying the CX5 that looked at the new Rav 4 and said it’s junk. Not sure why they were saying that, but instead jumped on why they should go with the CX5 instead. Or in my case, why they should go with a Buick or other GM crossover!! haha. Anyhow, let’s get the Chevy and GM other brands to de-throne the Rav 4 so it can join the falling CRV!
I think the Terrain’s design is mainstream; it looks like a typical CUV and there’s nothing really radical about it. I think the front fascia needs more work; I would have made the head lights more pronounced and I think I would have made the overall design more truck-like as the previous Terrain was.
I just bought, 2 weeks ago, a 2019 Terrain SLE after being a loyal Hyundai owner. My Terrain is THE best car I have ever owned. Feels so much more solid than my Tuscon, great ride, super comfortable, every amenity I could want. I could not be happier. Nothing foreign out there called at me. I took one test drive and signed the papers. Extremely happy. GMC did good by me
