Competitive Sales Comparison
Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales continued to dominate their segment in the second quarter of 2019, with the Tahoe becoming the sales leader in the highly-lucrative full-size mainstream SUV segment, pushing down the Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales) to second place. It’s worth reiterating that Expedition figures shown here include sales of both regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition MAX models. In comparison, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales are reported separately.

- Note that for Q1 2019, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL sales are reported on the same line, resulting in the Yukon XL line showing zero deliveries. This is because GM no longer breaks out GMC Yukon XL sales from GMC Yukon sales.
Additionally, combined Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales were higher than those of its corporate cousin – the GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales). Chevrolet’s full-size SUVs also outsold the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia by a wide margin.
On a combined basis, Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales accounted for 50 percent segment share, the highest in the segment by a long margin. Ford came in second with 21 percent while the GMC Yukon line held 19 percent. Taking into account the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon, GM enjoyed a 69 percent segment share during the quarter.
The full-size mainstream SUV segment expanded 18 percent to 104,093 units in Q2 2019.
The GM Authority Take
While Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales in the second quarter enabled the Bow Tie brand to maintain its status as the undisputed leader, it’s worth noting that the Ford Expedition made up a lot of ground, increasing sales by 50 percent while the Tahoe and Suburban saw a 22 percent increase in sales volume during the sale time.
We believe that the increase in Suburban and Tahoe sales volume is most likely the result of resumed production at the GM Arlington plant – the only site where GM’s full-size SUVs are assembled. Production at the plant was down during a part of the first quarter of 2019 in preparation for the all-new full-size SUVs, which will arrive for the 2021 model year.
Going forward, we expect Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales to remain roughly at current levels or grow slightly as a result of:
- Higher incentives on the current models to deter customers from switching to the Ford Expedition, and
- The ongoing shift in consumer behavior that sees increased demand for utility vehicles
Incentives will remain a particularly important element in enabling Chevrolet to keep its sales volume in the segment, as higher rebates is how the Bow Tie brand will be able to remain competitive against the all-new Ford Expedition, which is a significantly more modern offering compared to the aging Tahoe and Suburban. The Chevy models, meanwhile, are going on six years old for the 2020 model year. Luckily, Chevrolet will counter the all-new Expedition in the first quarter of 2019 with the all-new, 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2021 Suburban.

Just a model that has go fast in it, at least 6.2 with 500 hp and torque to go with, maybe LT4 650 hp same torque. Sounds fun ? Something to chase that darn jeep !
Just wait until they move their brilliant ideas to the SUVs to ruin evreything
ideas such as bigger trucks ! , hight strenght steel ! to worse fuel economy and performance numbers
with couple of plastic pieces inside even the sequoia will oversell GM most valuable segment.
The Denali SUV’s need an EV drivetrain, independent rear end & interiors lined with a vibrant mix of real silver, napa leather, and Velour. When I think Denali, I think of million dollar homes, so make it look super rich.
