Competitive Sales Comparison

Chevrolet Cruze sales continued to decline in the second quarter of 2019, with the compact model range posting the third-largest decline in sales volume in its segment.

The performance puts the discontinued model in seventh place in its competitive set in terms of U.S. sales volume during the quarter, behind the Honda Civic in first, Toyota Corolla in second, Nissan Sentra in third, Hyundai Elantra in fourth, Kia Forte in fifth, and VW Jetta Sedan in sixth. Notably, the top three Japanese contenders accounted for more than 50 percent of the segment’s overall sales volume during the quarter.

The GM Authority Take

The Chevrolet Cruze sales slump is directly attributable to the discontinuation of the model for the North American market, since both the GM Lordstown plant in the U.S. and the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico ended Cruze production in March.

The discontinuation was caused by GM electing to focus on other models and segments that are more profitable for the automaker. Prior to the discontinuation, Cruze sales were already falling behind those of the competition, primarily as a result of the following reasons:

  1. An ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks.
  2. Product competitiveness factors, including the fact that the second-generation Cruze was not a particularly standout product in an extremely competitive segment. Specifically, there wasn’t much of a reason to buy the Cruze over similar offerings from well-established and highly-attractive rivals from Japan, Korea, and Germany.
  3. Various other product-related shortcomings such as not offering all-wheel-drive or a high-performance variant, while also being the only model in its competitive set that cannot be easily equipped with a roof rack. As such, despite being a new product with several features unique to its segment, the Cruze is simply not as competitive as its direct rivals.
  4. Lack of marketing support for the Cruze on a national and retail level.

Despite its discontinuation in North America, the Cruze will live on in other markets, including China and South America.

  1. The Cruze is a lame vehicle in its segment. Drove one for a month, and I must say, it’s a disappointment. Has major body roll, severe delay in power, harsh ride quality, and very poor material choice in the interior.

    It has 153HP Max…. at 6300RPM.
    It has 184-lb/ft of Torque… @ 2,500RPM.

By the time you get the car even there, you have Prius’s and Fiesta’s passing you, and the car is chugging gas. The Previous Engine in the Cruze achieved max torque at 1,850RPM. Even if it was less torque. The curve was much better, and sooner.

The current Cruze is a HUGE disappointment.

    1. I completely disagree. I had both cruzes and 2nd gen was far superior than the 1st Gen. More power, better gas mileage and I had top of the line on both. It also has more room, interior was much more usable and laid out. Material quality was about the same and the honda civic was about the same. I think its biggest issue was the styling outside. I heard many people who like the old style better. But then a few who liked new 2nd gen and that was mainly from foreign car buyers. I think the face lift in 2019 looks even better. But they didn’t give it a chance.

They also made the biggest mistake of not offering a 2 door. I think if they had 2 door RS the sales would have been right with the Civic.

      1. 100% agreed. I had a ’13 LT RS and I now have a ’17 LT RS sedan. They are my commuter cars. I work ~20 miles from home and the commute is 90% highway. The ’13 averaged 36MPG over 3 years and the ’17 is averaging 42.5MPG over 2.5 years. For ~$20k, what more could you want? Roomy, sporty, good in the snow, sufficient amenities, etc..

I see at least 5-6 Cruze’s to/from work everyday. GM sold the Hell out of them, but for whatever reason, the “Big Brass” thought they could use a few more mundane CUV’s. Ugh…

    2. Poor choice of interior material? I have a 19 Cruze LS and there’s nothing wrong with the interior. Most new cars use plastic and cloth in the interior. So you’re just bad mouthing to be bad mouthing.

  2. Chevrolet and General Motors never listen to customers as how many people have SCREAMED that the Cruze needed a SS sporty model; but all those suggestions fell on deaf ears and GM already had a perfect engine that would transform the personality of the Chevrolet Cruze and Trax, the engine is the 200 hp LWC 1.6L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo that is used by the soon to be discontinued Buick Encore as 200 hp would make the Cruze and Trax a lot of fun on the road.

  3. Interesting .. In a quarter the segment sells 378,024 and 4 top players makes 267,212 of the volume and GM things it needs to quit because they don’t sell enough volumes.

and they think selling 12000 SUVs is a big volume and make a lot profit. I am sure Cruze deserves a better treatment, a better long term strategy and a better product.

    1. Another fun fact is Hyundai and Kia together sells 75,898 where they sells more compacts than Toyota. Segment leader Honda have no fleet sales.

I think GM management needs to rethink they really want to do this job or some other things which they may be good and and give GM to some one capable of being a GM management. Look how much growth Hyundai and Kia made in last 10 years.

  4. Talk about stabbing oneself in the foot. I hope this dont come back to haunt GM, that Cruze platform had potential for a full body redesign without major upgrades other than some strengthening and lightweighting. To cut the argument short, GM ought to be ashamed of themselves.

  6. Wow, nobody is looking at the fact is Toyanda spent billions and just in time for the market to shrink. The discontinuing of Cruze/Dart/Foucs should have been increased sales for imports but we see it isn’t, only Jetta and it’s selected buyers have some success.

  7. GM essentially disincentivized dealerships from selling them, and there haven’t been many on the lots. This should be no surprise to anyone, including GM.

  8. Isn’t the 2019 the last model year for the Cavalier/Cobalt/Cruze line anyway? GM is shooting themselves in the foot for ceasing one of their longeat running, best selling cars.

  9. Between this venue and YouTube, many like to verbally assault the Cruze. It’s relentless and unbelievable. I bought a 19 Cruze LS the last day of November 18. While the Cruze was available at a modest amount of dealers in Florida, I had to wait at least 2 months for it to arrive at a dealer in Sarasota County. Unlike the Toyota and Hyundai, the Cruze has a fantastic looking front end, which should be important to every buyer. And as far as options, there’s nothing wrong with what the Cruze has. I also like my 16″ wheels over the 15″. And while the Cruze only has a 4 cylinder, it certainly gets down the road at a pretty good clip. No it’s not a race car, but anyone forgetting it has a turbo for Pete’s sake? Also a paint & body guy I know isn’t convinced that the driver alert options are all they’re cracked up to be. In closing, I’d bet 99.9% of the people who bad mouth the Cruze don’t even own the f-n car. Sayonara.

  11. I have a 13 Cruze LS with a MT. The only thing I don’t like is that my driver seat is wearing to where my left side is lower and I don’t sit leaned to one side or the other. It is a phenomenal car other than that. I can get almost 40 mpg on highway trips.
