Every now and then we come across a build online that reminds us why we became interested in cars in the first place.
It’s hard to look at this wild first-generation Chevrolet Camaro 4×4 build that Hoonigan Daily Transmission found at LS Fest and not feel like a kid discovering cars all over again. Built around a Hummer H1 chassis, this is one of the cooler home-brew builds we’ve ever seen and best of all, it was put together on a budget by an average, working class guy in his garage. What’s not to like about that?
Hyperbole is rampant on the internet but this truly is one of the most interesting builds we’ve ever laid eyes on. The owner originally built it for mud bogs and mud drag racing, so it’s not just for show. The Hummer H1’s independent suspension makes it ultra capable and ensures it has plenty of ground clearance, while the rear-wheel steering system allows for insane, carnival ride-like donuts on both mud and pavement.
It’s also packing a turbocharged LS1 V8 under the hood and has a 100 shot of nitrous onboard, making it fast by any measure – not just for something with monster truck tires. The ultra short gearing helps too, of course.
Check out the video embedded above for a complete deep dive into this Mad Max-style Camaro. There’s a ton of cool features we didn’t get to touch on, like the portal axles and some of the engine and front differential packaging, so you definitely won’t want to miss it. It also features some clips of it mud drag racing and doing donuts at LS Fest.
