GMC Sierra Sales Decrease 4 Percent To 56,857 Units In Q2 2019

GMC Sierra sales decreased in the United States and Canada, and increased in Mexico during the second quarter of 2019.

Note that the figures shown below contain sales of both, the outgoing 2018 and 2019 K2 Sierra and the all-new 2019 T1 Sierra. The latter went on sale in the second half of August 2018 (in the middle of the third quarter), while still not having completed its launch process during the second quarter of 2019.

Competitive Sales Comparison

Second-quarter 2019 GMC Sierra sales place the full-size pickup truck in fourth place in its competitive set by overall sales volume. The four percent decline in GMC Sierra sales during the quarter underperformed the segment just as the full-size pickup truck segment actually expanded an average of 4.6 percent during the quarter.

The results leave the Sierra trailing the Ford F-Series (see Ford F-series sales) in first place (by a wide margin of over 170,000 units), the Ram Pickup (see Ram Pickup sales) in second place, and the Sierra’s corporate cousin – the Chevrolet Silverado (see Chevy Silverado sales) in third place. Meanwhile, the Sierra finished ahead of other segment contenders, including the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan.

The Sierra did see segment share slide ever so slightly during the quarter, falling from 10 to 9 percent, compared to a lofty 36 percent commanded by the F-Series, 28 percent by the Ram Pickup, and 22 percent segment share of the Silverado. The Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan held 5 and 1 percent segment shares, respectively.

The full-size pickup truck segment contracted an average of 4.6 percent to 650,302 units in Q2 2019.

We are providing Honda Ridgeline sales below for informational purposes, since the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Sierra sales were less than stellar during the second quarter of 2019. To clarify, the launch of the all-new Sierra 1500 was in full swing during the second quarter, though the inventory of some models was not fully built up during the timeframe. Meanwhile, the all-new 2020 Sierra HD models only began to trickle in on dealer lots by the end of the quarter. These two launch-related factors negatively impacted GMC Sierra sales performance.

Meanwhile, GMC offered some appealing Sierra incentives during the second quarter. In fact, GMC Sierra discounts in Q2 2019 included $10,000 off remaining K2 Sierra models in June as well as $9,500 off the all-new Sierra 1500 in June.

We should also mention some questionable sales tactics that Ram’s parent firm, FCA, took part in during the prior, first quarter. The automaker placed 553 units of the Ram 1500 Classic into courtesy transportation fleets, which are provided to customers as service loaners at dealers. Doing so counts those 553 units as new retail sales. The pickups will work a few thousand miles and will then be offloaded as used cars. It’s likely that the same process was carried out during the second quarter.

We had expected second-quarter GMC Sierra sales to be slightly better than those during the prior quarter due to better availability. While that doesn’t appear to be the case, we still think that both the Sierra and Silverado will hit their stride from a sales volume standpoint in the third quarter as a result of full availability of half-ton models and improved availability of the new Heavy Duty models.

  1. GM has ignored their customers needs, wants, and concerns for far too long. Now it shows… Besides the fact that they’ve out priced these glorified cars way beyond their average sustainable users income levels.

    1. This is true. Recently, when I looked at the 2019 Chevy Trail Boss and GMC AT4 trucks, I could not believe that GM Financial was offering such terrible finance and lease rates with almost zero incentives.
But then there were tons of 2018 still left over on the dealer lots which tells me that GM is not being realistic when they are offering trucks that are over $50K in prices.
I went with a Japanese truck instead.
Sorry GM, you lost a customer….

      1. GM doesn’t always do the right thing (no company does)… but damn, don’t hate your country for it.

    2. GM has lost middle-America due to uncompetitive products and the way the company became a political football less than a decade ago. China has hurt, too. Trucks are more than metal and the drop in brand loyalty is a shocker.
GM needed to grab the coasts but that will never happen. The General needs to reverse merge with PSA, take its management, and make an alliance with Honda which would mean big cost cutting and access to Japanese market.
GM looks healthy now but in a recession it will be weaker than FCA. It’s platform/architecture costs alone are backbreaking. GM should be using an upgraded GEM in North America much like FCA uses USCW.

  2. Well, maybe if the transmission in these cars wasn’t garbage. Can you believe that downshifting feels like the car is being hit from behind? I’ve taken my 2018 GMC Sierra to the dealer several times, their answer “this is a known defect of these 8-speed transmissions”. Do your research, buy something else. This will be my last GMC. They could care less, I have DMed GMC and have never gotten a reply from them directly.

  3. I am a GM person but I had more respect for GM than the way they have treated the customers and have handled the 8-Speed transmission issue.
They know they have an issue and seem to have a fix by using new fluid from last knowledge.
They need to take care of the problem for the those vehicles out there with that issue and bend over backwards for the customer or they WILL loose a lot of customers.
Telling customers they should just sell or trade that vehicle instead of fixing it for them is not a fix. GM is better than that. Or should be if they are to survive.

  4. I’m surprised the sales are not down more with the prices on the trucks. If you have a weak heart, don’t look at the window sticker.

  5. I can’t understand why GM thought a truck that is more expensive yet with less standard content built with cheap materials and polarizing styling, no, unattractive styling would be a hit. The imagined excuse of a delayed roll out will not stand for long with a decline in sales. And the rise in profit due to higher ATP will decline eventually due to a decline in sales. General Motors trucks are expected to look and feel and perform a certain way, it’s woven into the fabric of the millions of buyers that LOVE them, but this truck is a miss. It’s ok, but ok does not cut it! No adjustable seatbelts anymore? No storage in the center fold down console on Custom levels? No symmetry in the design? A belt line so high the truck looks like Steve Erkel’s pants? No passion in the product but plenty of cost cutting though!
All the historical implications and references of the first female CEO of a car company aside, is it really a good idea to have an accountant in charge of a corporation that relies heavily on emotional purchases? Remember, styling attracts the buyer, quality keeps them.
Where has the value and dependability gone in a GM truck? Most likely down a “triple zero” tube.

  6. Ram sales YTD up 28%. Chevy down 11%. GMC down 3%

That pretty much says it all.
