Competitive Sales Comparison

Chevrolet Malibu sales performance in the second quarter enabled the nameplate to maintain its position as the fifth best-selling model in its competitive set. Meanwhile, the Toyota Camry dominated the segment in first place, with nearly 30,000 more deliveries than the runner-up, the Honda Accord. The Accord was followed by the Nissan Altima in third, and the discontinued Ford Fusion in fourth.

The Malibu outsold the rest of the segment, including the Kia Optima in sixth place, Hyundai Sonata in seventh, Subaru Legacy in eighth, Volkswagen Passat in ninth (see VW Passat sales), and the Mazda6 in tenth (see Mazda6 sales). Expectedly, the discontinued Chrysler 200 was last.

The Malibu saw its segment share shrink from 10 to 8 percent, trailing behind the 25 percent share of the Toyota Camry, 17 percent of the Honda Accord, and 15 percent of the Nissan Altima.

The midsize mainstream sedan segment contracted an average of 7 percent to 374,768 units in Q2 2019. As such, the 27 percent decline in Chevrolet Malibu sales was a significantly faster drop compared to the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Malibu sales were technically up in the first quarter of 2019, but this growth was short-lived, as sales plunged during the second quarter. This isn’t good news for the ‘Bu, which has not been discontinued like other Chevy sedans like the CruzeImpala, and Volt; the latest industry rumblings say the Chevy Sonic will also be dropped, though Chevrolet has denied those claims.

We believe the growth experienced during Q1 was the result of lucrative incentive offers, which were significantly less attractive during the second quarter. Hence, any positive momentum in this segment may require more rebates and incentives from GM, which will negatively impact profit margins derived from the vehicle line. In fact, we wonder how long GM will tolerate such massive erosions in Chevrolet Malibu sales volume before deciding to drop the vehicle, much like the aforementioned nameplates.

It will be interesting to see how Chevrolet Malibu sales fare throughout the rest of 2019, as its Japanese competition – namely the Accord and Camry – continues to dominate the segment, and while buyers continue gravitating toward crossover SUVs at the expense of sedans.

About Chevrolet Malibu

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan sold in most markets where Chevrolet has a business presence. It is currently Chevrolet's second-largest sedan, in the U.S. and Canada, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and compact Chevrolet Cruze but under the full-size Chevrolet Impala.

The current, ninth-generation model was introduced in 2016. It rides on the GM E2 platform shared with the Buick Regal, Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, Holden Commodore NG, and the Cadillac XT4.

For 2019 - the fourth model year of the ninth-gen model - the Malibu received a midcycle enhancement, otherwise known as a facelift or refresh, that consists of revised exterior styling, a new Malibu RS trim level, a CVT transmission for L, LS, LT and RS models, a new infotainment system, a new 8-inch reconfigurable driver information center (DIC), LED headlamps on the Premier model, and various other new features.

  1. To beat a Dead Horse again….GM, Please Make Better Interiors.

    1. Better interiors would require better management, better designers, better materials, better suppliers, in a word, money. The main goal of GM is to maximize profits so as to increase stock price. That’s how Barra and her little group of top executives get compensated. Closing manufacturing facilities and shifting production to Mexico and China maximizes profits. Letting U.S. made vehicles die from lack of updates, advertising, design and quality will turn GM into an importer and distributer of cheaper vehicles, and thus maximize profits and stock price.

      1. I think GM has great designers but not great Leadership that wont push the Beancounters to do the right thing. To me that is the biggest issue. The new CT5 interior is pretty alright and the new C8 interior is borderline amazing. So they can make great interiors they are just not allowed to.

  2. Why is Ford killing Fusion. They must be making money off the vehicle.
Malibu has a bad interior but Fusion is worse. Chrysler 200 was nice inside and a great ride sans the transmission issues.

    1. Ford is actually killing it with the Fusin Hybrid I guess. It is beating the Prius right now.
I have driven both Fusion and Malibu, not sure if you mean design wise better than the Malibu because materials wise, the Malibu is definitely worse.

  3. Slowing sales of the Chevrolet Malibu demonstrates it’s becoming a CUV world as buyers like the Equinox with 85,656 units sold in Q2 2019 or the new Blazer which managed 11,772 Units in the same period as production started to come online.

  4. The discounted Impala is hurting the Malibu…and leftover Cruze models are also still around.

This car will sell pretty well, especially after the competitive set thins. GM needs to stay the course, and possibly consider designing the next gen Regal, Regal Wagon, and Malibu on the same chassis and build them in the same plant.

  5. The hybrid model is actually a nice whip second only to the Accord hybrid imho. It just doesn’t get advertised at all. Still need a true sport model for those looking for something outside the Japanese/Korean makes.

  6. Nice vehicle. That’s my US car, I love mine. But we can’t ignore the quality perception inside. The new Accord looks like a much more expensive car. If GM is going ATP vs volume, it should fix the interior of ALL its car right now.

  7. All these cars are in a decline. Sure one can pop up for a month or two but they all are slowing declining in volumes. At the same time other models like the CUV models continue to increase in volumes.

Until the market changes there is little that is going to stop the decline. I some times thing companies like GM hope that the death of the Impala and Cruise will move more sedan customers to the Malibu. But many have just moved to CUV models.

If you know your history or look back at what numbers sedans sold years ago these are really weak numbers here. The Caprice and Malibu moved hundred of thousands of units a year with no issue. today well you can see.

When Toyota and Honda are cutting production that is telling of where the market is going.

    1. You have to look back 10 years to see how fast things can change. Back then we were told that pickup sales were peaking and plants like Ford Michigan Truck were converted to small cars. Now trucks cannot be built fast enough and FCA converted their Sterling Heights Michigan plant to Ram production and Ford converted the now named Michigan Assembly Plant to trucks. GM (and FOrd for that matter) I feel are making huge mistakes dropping sedans. There was no excuse whatsoever why Cruze production could not have been consolidated with another plant since it was still selling over 100K units a year. Better hope gas does not shoot up to $5 a gallon again.

  10. IMO The main problem with Malibu is Interior, Engine and transmission. There are other things that need fixing but fixing those that I mentioned will go a long ways in improving sales. Oh yah I forgot to mention the biggie that effects all of GM , Marketing. Remember I said IMO.

  12. I have been looking for a new car and think I waited too long. the ’18 Malibu had a good engine and transmission (interior was a little too plastic), now you are offering a good looking car Malibu sport and coupling it with a CVT and a start-stop function that you can’t defeat. Talk about a loser. What were you thinking. Couple it with a 6 speed manual or the automatic, it might be more appealing. I currently own an ’09 and everybody in the family loves it. The car is the right size for me and I don’t want a CUV/SUV. I want a family car that is fun to drive and the demo I tested for the ’19 wasn’t. Please fix it. I am also a shareholder and not happy.
