Competitive Sales Comparison

After a very healthy fourth quarter and even better first quarter, U.S. Chevrolet Equinox sales continued to grow during the second quarter of 2019. The performance represents the compact crossover’s best second quarter sales figure, while propelling the model to second best-selling status in its competitive set. The Equinox was outsold only by the Toyota RAV4, but Equinox sales grew nearly 16 percent versus 9 percent for the Toyota.

The Equinox outsold all other contenders, including the Nissan Rogue, Ford Escape (see Ford Escape sales), Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee (see Jeep Cherokee sales), Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 (see Mazda CX-5 sales), Subaru Crosstrek, Volkswagen Tiguan (see VW Tiguan sales), the Equinox’s corporate cousin – the GMC Terrain (see GMC Terrain sales), as well as the Dodge Journey (see Dodge Journey sales), Kia Sportage, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

What’s more, Chevrolet Equinox sales grew faster than the segment average. Equinox managed to post one of the highest sales growth rates in its segment on a percentage basis, with only the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross growing faster at 55 percent.

The second-quarter performance gives the Equinox a segment share of 12 percent, only second to that of the Toyota RAV4, which commanded a market share of 16 percent.

The compact mainstream crossover segment contracted 8.7 percent to 730,618 units in Q2 2019.

The GM Authority Take

Chevrolet Equinox sales during the second quarter of 2019 continue to impress, serving as a testament to the model’s amazing success. We attribute the RAV4’s ongoing sales success to any combination of the following factors:

  • A desirable product offering that is very much relevant and attractive to the core market subset interested in these vehicles
  • Attractive incentives during the second quarter, including in April, May, and June

Combining sales of the Equinox with its corporate cousin, the GMC Terrain, GM saw a combined 110,645 cumulative deliveries during the quarter. Though a notable figure, the number is still short of the 116,790 deliveries of the Toyota RAV4. It will be interesting to see if the Equinox can catch up or even surpass the RAV4 in terms of cumulative sales volume.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Chevrolet Equinox Q2 2018 sales, except as noted
  • There were 77 selling days in Q2 2019 and 77 selling days in Q2 2018
  • South Korea sales figures reflect actual vehicle registrations rather than wholesales
  • China sales figures represent retail deliveries and not wholesales

About Chevrolet Equinox

The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover. It slots above the Chevrolet Trax and below the Chevrolet Traverse. It will also be positioned below the rumored to be the future Chevrolet Blazer. The first-generation Equinox ran from the 2005-2009 model years and was based on the first-generation Theta platform. The second-generation Equinox was offered from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. Both the first- and second-generation models were "tweeners", in that they straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The third-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its two predecessors, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.

The third-generation, 2018 and newer Equinox features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.

  2. Looks like GM just needs to figure out how to beat Toyota to be number 1. the new RAV4 is one ugly cuv and seems to lose in every comparison.

      1. It’s reliable vehicles and gm products are not .

        Plain and simple

Gm used to have this status . In the 1980’s , people bought crappy built , crappy riding gm products over better built Japanese products based on decades of reputation .

FYI many of the rav 4 are in rental fleets . Rented on last month . Drives a bit better than old crappy rav 4 but plenty of cheap plastic everywhere

Just bought Mazda CX-5 . Nicer than Xt-4 . Blows the doors off the nox . Love gm but not going to buy a so so product for a premium price .

        1. @James:

I’m calling your BS on this one. First, your opinion that GM products are not reliable is based upon what? It’s also quite wrong based on JD Power and even other sources. Second, I personally sell Mazda and I’ve driven thousands of miles in CX5’s. That is not a car I would ever consider. Ever. Just wait till some of the issues start to crop up on your car. Look at the ranking of Mazda…..near the bottom. Chevrolet and Buick constantly out-rank Mazda in every way. But the real question comes down to the drive. My 2018 Buick Encore drives much nicer than the CX5, it’s more quiet, it handles better, gets comparable MPG’s, and has a higher quality feel.

The reason the CX5 sells so well (if you consider the low numbers selling well) is because people mainly compare it to the Rav4 and CRV! If these same people actually pulled their head out of the sand and compared to the Equinox or a Buick, the Mazda would never sell in the numbers it does.

        2. Toyota and reliability haven’t gone hand in hand for the last 15 years. They make many crappy products on their own. The Tacoma comes to mind. Rated least reliability midsize truck for the last 3 years in a row.

The CX-5 has a considerably smaller interior volume than its competitors. Nice handling but not enough room. Mazda longer term build quality has never impressed me. Bad paint being the biggest problem I had. Paint flaked off, rust bubbled up everywhere and the engine drank oil. Brake life was also poor.

    2. Toyota has a rabid fan base though. I also think the Tacoma is butt ugly, but its sales far exceed those of the Colorado/Canyon combined.

  3. This is great. But before I will put on my party hat and celebrate to the fullest, I need to see the Equinox take down that but-ugly Rav4. Glad to see the even uglier CRV way down and hope it falls even farther. But for now, let’s get the Toyota off the top rung.

    1. This is much better than you think considering that the general public is a bunch of Toyota Zombies and even people on this site seem to think that everything GM makes is utter garbage from the stupidest car company run by the stupidest woman on Earth, its a miracle that the Equinox is kicking pretty much everyones ass…….

  4. Right now the focus needs to be build the right products, price it right and control cost.

In the near future everyone will lose volume and only those who learn to make more money with less volume will survive.

Also who ever can solve the battery cost issue and charging time on batteries will hold the advantage.

  5. Nice car. Give it more power to the 1,5 and a better interior and the Nox will grow even more.

  6. Simply makes more economic sense to buy the Chevrolet Equinox than a Trax, Cruze or Malibu.

  7. The Nox has see is the #8 on the best ten sellers in America,

There are only two sedans on the list and they are dropping. Only three cars left in the top ten.

  8. If i would have known all the issues with this car, i wouldve never bought it. Now im stuck with it. Sensor in the engine went, put it in “limp home” mode. Dealership said its a manufacturing issue, that GM IS AWARE OF AND HAS NOT FIXED pre-production. It was repaired and the ride is completely different. If I could trade it in, I would. Its jittery, auto stop feature sucks and regardless of how much time in between you switching from brake to gas it still jerks…I saved up for this car and it freakin broke my heart, i tell everyone i know not to buy this car. Thanks for crushing my dreams GM.

    1. @Desirae D.

Something doesn’t add up here. First, replacing a “sensor” in the engine will NOT cause the ride to change. Did you drive the car before buying it? The ride would have been the same then as now. Second, all brands are subject to a part failure here and there. Did they fix it? Is it still fixed? Did it cost you to fix (other than time)? If you don’t wish to have possible part failure on a new car, then your options are quite limited. For sure don’t buy a Volvo or Mazda then. But it can happen to them all. Third, the auto start-stop is no better on any other brand. BMW and MB were the first to really have this on most models and BMW took a huge hit from customers over it. Too much to list here, but don’t kick Chevrolet in the groin about this unless you level the playing field and include all brands that have it. I personally hate it and purposely chose my Buick Encore with the smaller engine just to avoid the start-stop. My suggestion would be to turn it off if you can or find out how it can be disabled. But I can personally tell you Volvo’s start-stop sucks. Even though Mazda doesn’t have it, they do have a feature that shuts down two cylinders when you come to a stop AND you can feel it kick on/off almost like the start-stop. I’ll take my Encore without over those two systems.
