Competitive Sales Comparison
Chevrolet Colorado sales were the only ones to decrease in the midsize mainstream pickup truck segment during the second quarter of 2019. That said, the Colorado still managed to outsell every competitor in the space except for the class-leading Toyota Tacoma. As such, the Colorado outsold the Ford Ranger (see Ford Ranger sales), the Nissan Frontier, and its own corporate cousin – the GMC Canyon (see GMC Canyon sales).
The Tacoma sold more than twice as many units than the Colorado. In fact, the Tacoma’s 63,683 deliveries were higher than combined Colorado and Canyon sales, which netted 43,578 combined units, for a 30 percent segment share.

The GM Authority Take
The fact that Chevrolet Colorado sales declined while all of its competitors saw sales increase is a worrisome turn of events, especially when considering the amount of segment share the Colorado lost during the quarter – falling from 31 percent in Q2 2018 to 22 percent this year. As such, the Colorado has lost a lot of ground to the reigning champ – the Toyota Tacoma, as well as to the segment newcomer – the Ford Ranger.
We believe that the Colorado’s precipitous drop is caused by two factors. First is the new Ford Ranger, which seems to be putting a dent in Colorado sales. Second is Toyota’s impressive performance in the space. The Japanese offering has an established reputation in the midsize truck space, and also offered higher incentives during the quarter than Chevrolet did on the Colorado.
In addition, the Tacoma continues to perform well in fleet and commercial sales. By comparison, Chevrolet is making up lost ground after it withdrew from the midsize pickup truck segment in 2012. In other words, there is value in not abandoning segments.
While Tacoma sales were up, Toyota actually lost about 4 percent market share, primarily due to a relatively strong performance by the new Ford Ranger, which earned a 14 percent segment share. An increase in Frontier and Canyon sales also contributed to the detraction of segment share from Toyota.
It will be interesting to see how this segment fares in the second half of 2019, especially given that GM has decided not to do a Colorado midcycle enhancement (aka refresh or facelift). The automaker will instead wait to completely overhaul (redesign and re-engineer) its truck around 2023.

About Chevrolet Colorado
The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck. It is currently Chevrolet's smallest pickup truck in the U.S. and Canada, slotting under the full-size Chevrolet Silverado. In Mexico, the Colorado slots above the compact Chevrolet Montana and the similarly-sized S10, but below the Silverado/Cheyenne (the name for some of Silverado's trim levels in Mexico).
The current Colorado was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Colorado nameplate. The model rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the GMC Canyon, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

International Chevrolet/Holden Trailblazer

International Chevrolet Colorado (Holden Colorado)
The 2018 Chevy Colorado represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. The off-road-specific Colorado ZR2 was launched for the 2017 model year. However, the Colorado family continues to lack various features asked by many present and potential customers, such as a moonroof, a sliding rear window, as well as a range-topping LTZ or High Country trim level.
The 2019 Chevy Colorado represents the fifth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle sees a new Colorado ZR2 Bison package, new exterior colors, a new 18-inch wheel, black bowties for every ZR2 model. Additionally, the 2019 Colorado gets new set of infotainment systems that represent the third generation of Chevrolet infotainment systems, Type A and Type C USB ports, a second in-cabin microphone, a high-def Rear Vision Camera, UltraSonic Rear Park Assist, a heated steering wheel, and 6-way power driver seat on some models. The street-focused Colorado RST and Z71 Trail Runner off-roader are also added to the lineup. The manual transmission is deleted from the powertrain lineup.
A midcycle refresh is expected for the 2020 model year. It is believed that the update will bring revised front and rear styling, as well as possible updates to the interior, and powertrain.
For the U.S. and Canada, the Chevrolet Colorado is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA. The model sold in Asia-Pacific is built at the GM Thailand plant in Rayong, which is operated by GM Thailand. The GM Sao Jose Dos Campos plant operated by GM Brazil builds the Chevy S10 for South America.

Proves companies can’t sit still. Have to keep a step ahead of competition not step behind. That’s what killed Colorado and Ranger first time. They got stagnant.
And, in my opinion, the non warrantied GM 8 speed issues.
And customer service treatment.
In my opinion
Proof? Where is your proof of this.
Warranties pick em 5 year 60k mile and they will flush, replace and even buy back your vehicle what other options are there if they can not repair it?
Again your flawed opinion.
Yes scott3, I agree, it is my opinion,
Do I have facts to back up any ongoing GM 8 speed troubles, no, no I do not.
All I offer the other readers is my opinion, as I read the lawsuits, and other dissatisfied customers failed attempts to resolve the trouble with their ongoing 8 speeds.
Meanwhile you have had your very own beloved GM 8 speed replaced, after having troubles, no questions asked, yet when others have not had the same outcome you place the blame on them.
I believe your opinion, is the wrong one.
You believe my opinion is the wrong one.
And that is where we are at on this subject.
You have no more proof, or facts to back up your claim its fixed than I do that it is not.
Let the other readers make up their own minds, as I believe some potential Canyon and 1500 customers have.
Non warrantied?
They warrantied issues that were actually things that could be fixed or design changes made. The only “non warrantied” thing with the 8-speed is the bump shifting, an characteristic that’s common on several transmissions from GM, Ford, FCA, and anyone else that uses a ZF 8HP transmission. People like you just perpetuate uninformed opinions that spread this kind of misinformation.
The other issue that is customers are so stubborn that they won’t even go in for the new transmission fluid because they would rather sit and complain, hoping somebody will step in and give them a free truck instead of letting GM fix their TC shudder. Anyone that’s actually had the new fluid TSB done knows that it works.
There are a lot of really stupid, really stubborn people out there with 8-speeds that would rather sit online and whine about their shudder than take it to the dealer and get it fixed. The ExMobil identified the issue as being a moisture problem and came up with a better base stock for Dexron HP. Almost all of the guys over on CorvetteForum that got the new fluid have reported that the shudder went away and stayed away. The guys that don’t go in for it are just sitting around hoping the class action lawsuit goes well and they get their $100 from GM.
These trucks are not little toys found at Walmart. If transmissions are having issues, I’d bet the farm people are driving them hard.
I think the Colorado is a nice looking ride. But, when I bought my last pickup I wound up buying a pretty well loaded F150 because of price fueled by generous incentives and that old buyer saw “for very little more money more I could get a full size”.
In my case it was actually less as Chevy didn’t have very aggressive incentives at the time. If the manufacturer offerings had been a bit better I might be in a Colorado instead.
Losing sales and what’s your fix? Stay the course and make no changes. That a boy GM.
I have been thinking of purchasing a Colorado ZR2 Bison but have had second thoughts based on the known 8 speed transmission problems ongoing for at least 3 years. I own a 2015 Silverado 3500HD and now read about problems with the high pressure fuel pump in multiple year vehicles which can cost the owner approximately $13,000 to repair. Used to hear chevy “like a rock”. Well it seems that rock is now crumbling sandstone and not granite.
I also currently own a 1973 Corvette, 2002 Trailblazer and a 2004 Malibu. My feeling of a strong Chevy is beginning to fade as IMHO GM/Chevy know they have issues with certain vehicles/builds over multiple years and are not taking steps to remedy the problems.
I know guys with 2019 Silverados and none of them have mentioned any problem with the 8-speed. The most common issue was shudder which was solved late last year when they figured out that Exxon Mobil’s transmission fluid formulation had issues with moisture. They reformulated it to fix the moisture issue and the shudder issue went away.
The HPFP issue that affected the Duramax is also an issue with any diesel engine with the CP4. The 6.7 Powerstroke uses a CP4 and has had a lot of issues with it. The newest version of the Cummins 6.7 just switched to a CP4. They’re ticking time boms. There’s a reason GM switched to a Denso HPFP in 2017.
If you have kept up on the 8 speed issue it had been resolved.
TSB 18 NA 355 is now updated that the new Mobil 0ne Blue label has taken care of the issue for those with the problem.
It is as of March 1 2019 the new fluid is being used on all new models.
As of July 8 they amended the TSB to replace the fluid for any customer presenting a model with the issue with no diagnosis needed. So just take any 8 speed in and the full flush will be performed.
The report in GM Technik the techs have reported great success. With this and only in rare cases have they needed to replace the converter.
The problem I see at leadt in my area the Colorado sales were up for a good part of this year so the lots are limited on inventory with production down.
Most on the forum just ordered trucks that will not be in till August. Sales should return.
Note GMC sales were down most of the year but now the sales have jumped up with incentives.
No need to panic yet as it is still the best truck in class. We should see the totally new model in two year as the 2023 will be out in 2022.
Before that we may see a mid SUV.
A GM TSB is not factual proof that the 8 speed transmission issues are fixed.
And talking to a GM tech, that is employed by GM , also is not factual proof the GM 8 speed transmission troubles are fixed.
In my opinion, when the customers, who own these vehicles, quit writing on the internet, that is truly when we will know GM has a fix.
Do I believe everything on the internet to be true ?
No I do not.
However seem like the most realistic representation of real owners I have found yet, and you know the sites, I would hope.
But for now, in my opinion, GM has another band aid to help, as I have read several customer comments of already having two of three flushes after the trouble comes back.
And in my opinion, this is GM just pushing the troubled vehicles out of the warranty period so its no longer their problem.
But I would love to see any facts other than GM hear say to prove it is resolved.
it Is on you to prove me wrong. Where is your proof? You got nothing but negative antiGM post all day everyday nothing is all you are about.
They are now using it in all production vehicles and they are keeping with the 5 year 60k warranty.
Could there still be an issue in the future yes. But at this point with what we have and the large number of positive reports from real owners on more than on forum it appears they have addressed the moisture issue.
Visit the forums and most after this latest fix appear to have no more issues unlike the previous.
All we get from you is your opinion and we know what that is worth. Nothing.
No I do not believe everything on the web. Especially after seeing your post.
If it is a band aid where’s your proof troll.
As for the failed flushes if you had your facts together you would understand this.
1 the first flush was with the original fluid.
2 the second TSB flush was with the black label and it never fixed it.
3 the present fluid was introduced last year with great results if the flush did not fix it the next step is to replace the glazed converter and use the new fluid.
The blue label has worked so well that GM now has made it the standard at the plants in all install of the 8 speed and a no questioned asked fluid replacement upon request of anyone that experiences a shudder.
If that is not good enough then go buy a Toyota and find they also have shudder issues too.
Why is it on me to prove you wrong ?
And that is not true, I do not post, all negative posts, all day long, if and when I agree with others on topics that interest me I post nothing but positive and uplifting comments.
Most of the time, you get the other side simply because you comment on things as if it is fact , when it is not, it is your opinion.
I do not call you a troll, or ask you if you need phychiatric help, after every comment I don’t agree with you on.
Is the GM 8 speed transmission troubles fixed ?
In your truck, after having your replaced, your answer is, yes.
You know absolutely no more whether it is or not, than I do.
Yet for some reason you think your hear say is more factual than my hear say, and that is simply not true.
They are both opinions.
And are both hear say.
From everything I’ve see, the 2019 Silverado/Sierra 8-speed has all the troubles fixed. The only one that’s a complaint is the bump shift, which is a common complaint with all transmissions used in half-ton trucks these days because of their fuel economy-minded tuning. Customers are just too stupid to understand that, and in their mind the transmission is failing when really it’s operating as intended.
Keith,
I drove a 19 Denali 6.2 – 10 speed before I ordered my 2020HD and never noticed a bump shift.
I will go drive another one and see if this so called bump shift is common with all transmissions used in half ton trucks, or if I was just too stupid to understand it.
Calling the customer stupid ?
I bet that sells a lot of half ton trucks.
I said half-ton, not 3/4 or 1-ton. Only the half-tons are required by the feds to meet fuel economy requirements. Use Google to search and you find examples of 2019 Ram 1500’s with a bump downshifting ZF 8HP transmission. You can also find a ton of complaints for bump downshifts with the Ford F-150’s new 10R80.
I’m not a salesman, so I have no problem calling a stupid person stupid.
and I said 19 Denali 6.2 -10 speed, ane if you knew anything you would know a 19 Denali 6.2 10 speed is only a half ton,
So again I drove a 2019 Denali 6.2 – 10 speed in a 2019 GMC Denali half ton pickup,
To look at the interior again, before ordering my 2020 Denali HD.
And again noticed no bump shift, like you say exists in all half ton trucks.
Also the 2019 Denali 6.2 – 10 speed is a great, great, great truck.
Except the center dash.
In my opinion.
Keith,
I was told, by customers of GM, that the most annoying shift ( bump shift ) is downshifting.
Is this true, or what you have heard ?
If so, what I can not figure out ( stupid customer again ) is how is fuel being saved on the coast, or non acceleration ?
I know the clutch plate in the torque converter is locked, on acceleration quickly, for fuel savings, but no one is burning fuel coasting.
So unless they are trying to save on the transmission wear by not applying the clutches or converter clutch on acceleration I would bet the speed of the CPU in the TCM is more of the trouble.
And if that is the case, again, it is a design flaw.
Fill me in on what you know.
Change my mind.
I think GM is making a big mistake by not going through with a mid-cycle refresh. Imagine the shot in the arm it would give them to introduce the 2.7 from the Silverado combined with updated lighting, grills and interior appointments.
Well Scott I have had 2 of the ZR2s and have had nothing but problems with the 8 speeds. I have had 3 flushes including a tc replacement as well as the latest 18-NA-355. STILL have a shuddering issue. Care to explain why you are so sure that the issue is resolved? As for me the issue is very real. Can’t imagine how much this will cost me in lost value.
Does your V6 have cylinder deactivation like the Camaro V6?
Chuck I have followed this since 2017. The early fixes did not work and GM did not stick with long. The results were mixed right out of the dealer.
The new oil has had a great response on the forums of all the effected models. Most owners have had good results since it came out.
Note GM also has gone to the extent to implementing this new fluid as the factory fill which never happened before.
I have now had my fluid changed though I had no shudder but i have noted it has made the drive ability much better with smoother shifts.
The last 6 months have shown that this has been the best fix and the most effective. Will it last get only those with crystal balls can tell.
The one key is if you have the shudder after the recent flush it may require a converter as they clutch may be glazed so much the oil will not correct the issue. The techs have reported this is rare but will fix it.
Read the tech comments here as they are the people doing the work. This site is where they share info off the grid from GM.
I have read and watched this for a long time and this time the responses are much different.
Note too the 18 NA 355 has several updates and if you have not had a flush recently with the blue label Mobil One that is the key. They even build a specific machine to do the flush and just recently opened the flush up to all 8 speed transmission vehicles presented at the dealer.
I hope this helps.
https://gm-techlink.com/?p=11127
Exactly. The new fluid fixes the shudder for 90% of those with the issue. The friction properties of the original Dexron HP would shift over time as the fluid absorbed water from the air. The friction of a transmission fluid has a huge effect on the performance of the torque converter clutch which is designed to allow a small amount of slip while driving. As long as the correct fluid is used during the flush and the procedure followed correctly, the shudder issue should go away. It’s been very effective with the 8-speed Corvettes from what I’ve seen. Some people would rather sit around and whine about it so they can blame it on GM. More than a few guys that whine the loudest about the 8-speed are all guys that refuse to go in for the new TSB. They don’t care if the new fluid is working. They don’t want the fix, they want easy money from a legal settlement.
jackLightning,
just one question for you.
How many 8 speed transmissions were sold ?
Out of the 8 speeds sold, how many do you think were bad ?
Because if they were sold for 5 years, and 1,500,000 a year that’s 7,500,000 8 speeds.
So if this fixes 90% of them.
That’s 750,000 people with bad transmissions yet.
So what is your number of 10% not fixed ?
Just so everyone here knows, as a scott3 request.
I love my 2015 GMC Canyon, All Terrain.
It is a great truck, daily driver, with 45245 miles.
I have had no troubles other than the recalls and heater control ( band aid ) clamp for this year.
And the horrible 6 speed transmission shift, that an aftermarket tune fixed.
I will buy another, unless GM makes a RWD/AWD midsized, anything else to choose from.
Very happy owner !
Your estrogen levels high again?
And just one more personal attack from scott3.
You should know by now that what you say means nothing to me.
Not one bit.
It is of no concern what so ever.
But glad to see you still care so much about what I have to say.
Thanks for the reply.
When I was looking at a new vehicle this year, I really considered the Colorado. It did all that I needed it to do- tow, carry my stuff, and be AWD. But the outdated styling, inside and out, really put me off. I didn’t end up with any other competition because I truly do not like the styling of the Ranger, at all, the Tacoma is nice, but ehh. And I don’t know enough about the Ridgeline to give it a chance. So really Chevy messed up for me by not refreshing.
Maybe just maybe GM should reconsider giving this Truck a proper refresh!!!
To make the Colorado class leading in every category they really need a complete redo. I would not waste the money on a MCE at this point. Put money on the hood on the existing product until they are ready for the new Colorado. I am not advocating taking their time with that, but I am advocating that they get it very right. They are still in a very strong position in the market with the existing product. I cant recall seeing a shootout yet that the Colorado was not the winner or number 2. The existing product is good, the next Gen must be “next level” complete in every way.
If they had any brains at all they would do a bit more on the 2020 refresh and change out to the 10 speed automatic like the Ranger uses and upgrade the interior a bit more.
Probably because of the 8 speed transmission that is a piece of junk, I know I have one
Chevy Colorado ZR2, SHUDDER problem with the transmission is a common problem with no recall issued.
Been going on for 3 years now and Chevy refuses to do anything but change the transmission fluid…..
There’s been a TSB out since January 2019 and a reformulated transmission fluid that has been proven to fix the shudder. How do you not know about this? GO TO YOUR DEALER AND GET THE NEW TRANSMISSION FLUID ALREADY.
The FLUID was causing the SHUDDER you dunce!
Whether you like it or not and whether it is backed up by data the reputation of the 8 speed hurts. Another factor is that the seats are very limited in their comfort adjustments. I have a 2016 and I test drove a 2019 and the salesmen made mention (multiple times) that the seats of the 2019 had two more adjustment functions than the 2016. That is a reflection of a lot of consumer feedback. I looked at Tacoma’s and Rangers. The fact that more safety features (and more sophisticated to boot) features are baked into those two just give the impression that those companies are more advanced and quite frankly give a crap. You can’t get enhanced safety features on the Z 71 because? (Either it was a marketing tool to try and drive LT sales or they can’t figure out what engineers at Jeep, Ford, and Toyota know how to do for offroading). Chevrolet/GM has forever shot itself it the foot with trucks. They did not stick to the formula of the other the cars, LS, LT, LTZ, Z 71. People get used to those trim levels… The build website is dated. They get so close and then…
