Buick Envision Sales Increased 28 Percent To 9,138 Units In Q2 2019

Buick Envision sales increased in the United States, and decreased in Canada and Mexico during the second quarter of 2019.

In the United States, Buick Envision deliveries totaled 9,138 units in Q2 2019, an increase of about 28 percent compared to 7,118 units sold in Q2 2018.

In the first six months of the year, Envision sales decreased about 0 percent to 16,761 units.

Buick Envision Sales - Q2 2019 - Canada

In Canada, Buick Envision deliveries totaled 813 units in Q2 2019, a decrease of about 9 percent compared to 893 units sold in Q2 2018.

In the first six months of the year, Envision sales decreased about 11 percent to 1,202 units.

Buick Envision Sales - Q2 2019 - Mexico

In Mexico, Buick Envision deliveries totaled 58 units in Q2 2019, a decrease of about 63 percent compared to 157 units sold in Q2 2018.

In the first six months of the year, Envision sales decreased about 44 percent to 129 units.

Competitive Sales Comparison

Buick Envision sales in the second quarter of 2019 enabled the model to maintain third place in its segment, behind the Acura RDX and Lexus NX.

The Envision managed to outsell its corporate cousin, the Cadillac XT4 (see Cadillac XT4 sales), along with the Lincoln MKC (see Lincoln MKC sales), Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, Infiniti QX50, Volvo XC40, Lexus UX, and the Mini Countryman.

While combined sales of the BMW X1 and its “four-door coupe” derivative, the X2, were on the heels of Envision sales in Q1, both models saw sharp declines of 72 percent and 43 percent, respectively, during the second quarter. This is likely a result of availability-related issues, as well as the fact that the refreshed 2020 models are just around the corner. Despite the drastic decline, both BMW crossovers sold more units than the Infiniti QX30 and the Audi Q3. The Audi, typically a strong contender in the segment, was recently overhauled (completely redesigned and re-engineered), and dealers are currently waiting for the all-new model to arrive. As such, Audi sales will likely rise relatively quickly in the near future as models roll into stock.

The compact premium crossover segments, otherwise known as the B- and C-crossover segments, contracted 6 percent to 79,768 units in Q2 2019.

Segmenting vehicles can be a tricky thing, especially for luxury crossovers. This is particularly true of the Envision – which occupies a position between segments  (tweener). On the one hand, the Envision is the size of a luxury C-Segment CUV. On the other hand, the Envision is priced to start at the bottom end of the luxury B-segment space. In that regard, the model is somewhat of a tweener – being priced like a luxury B-segment CUV, while being sized like a luxury C-segment CUV. As such, we have included both luxury B-crossovers and luxury C-crossovers in our comparison, so as to paint the most complete picture of the Envision’s performance.

Other relevant models that have similar tweener positioning include:

  • Volvo XC40: sized like a lux B-segment CUV model, priced closer to a lux C-segment CUV model, and intersecting with Envision in starting price.
  • Infiniti QX30: sized like a lux C-segment CUV model and priced like a lux B-segment CUV vehicle, it is essentially a rebadged Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, which is priced to start nearly $4,000 higher than the Infiniti QX30. To that end, we have included the Infiniti QX50 – Infiniti’s true lux C-segment crossover – in our charts. The QX30, meanwhile, intersects with the Envision in starting price.
  • Lexus UX: sized like a lux B-segment CUV, priced like a lux B-segment CUV, but intersects with Envision in starting price.

The GM Authority Take

The rebound in Buick Envision sales is quite a relief, as the declining sales during the fourth quarter of 2018 and again in the first quarter of 2019 were rather disappointing.

We primarily attribute the rebound in Buick Envision sales to the seemingly on-going 16 percent discount that the Tri-Shield brand has been offering throughout the majority of 2019. Obviously it is not the novelty of the discounted Envision that is luring customers, but rather it’s continued affordability and value-per-dollar proposition when compared to the rest of the segment.

About Buick Envision

The Buick Envision is a compact crossover that slots above the subcompact Buick Encore and below the full-size Buick Enclave. The current, first-generation Envision was introduced for the 2016 model year. The vehicle is based on a variant of the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt.

The Envision launched with a relatively steep starting price of $42,995 in 2016, since it was available only in the two highest trim levels and with the most potent turbo 2.0L LTG engine. The 2017 model introduced several lower-end trim levels, enabling the starting price to drop to $34,990. The 2018 model goes unchanged from the 2017 model.

The 2019 Envision received a midcycle refresh that includes a significant amount of changes, including new headlights and front grille, the new GM 9-speed automatic transmission on Premium models, new exterior colors and interior color combinations, reconfiguring the exhaust pipe on non-Premium models to be turned under the vehicle, new taillights, new wheel choices, the replacement of Ice Blue ambient lighting with White, and the addition of three new technologies -  an ionizing air cleaner, Tire Fill Alert, and wireless cell phone charging. There's also the removal of the Buick script from the rear of the vehicle.

The 2020 Envision will receive two new exterior colors, at the expense of two existing ones.

  2. I drive a Corvette, so I need a practical car to go with it. Got a 2019 Envision and am very happy with it. Only disapointment were the color choices. Looks like they fixed that.
