2020 Silverado HD Lineup: A Visual Comparison By Model And Trim Level

Chevrolet introduced the all-new 2020 Silverado HD lineup at the GM Flint plant in Michigan earlier in 2019. As of this writing, the trucks have been rolling off the line and deliveries are almost underway. The 2020 model year brings with a complete overhaul, including the underlying architecture, which itself lends to new exterior dimensions, including a longer, taller and wider body, not to mention a number of styling changes. However, with no less than five different trim levels to choose from, it’s easy to confuse which model is which. As such, we’re breaking it down with this 2020 Silverado HD visual comparison guide. For the sake of consistency, each trim level is in the Crew Cab/Standard Bed configuration and covered in Summit White paint.

About The 2020 Silverado HD
The Silverado HD received a complete overhaul for the 2020 model year. It’s built on the new GM T1 platform, and features an exterior design similar to that of the new Silverado 1500. The 2020 Silverado HD sports larger exterior dimensions, but is lighter than its predecessor thanks to a mixed-material design. The interior was also redesigned, and comes with the third-gen Chevrolet infotainment and heaps of new technology that helps in towing.
The powertrain lineup consists of the new 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine producing 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, which mates to the GM 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission. The optional 6.6L Duramax Diesel L5P V8 engine carries over with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, and mates to the GM-designed and Allison branded 10-speed automatic transmission.

The HD Custom is by far the best looking of the bunch. I’m not in love with it but somehow it works especially with the wheels shown in the photos…looks modern and tough. All the other ones just look awkward at least in the photos. Hopefully all trims will look better in person or they grow on me. I’m still so disappointed that GM had a clean sheet and pretty large budget for this generation of HDs and this is the best they could come up with.
They’re all ugly. They better hurry up and get super cruise on these so that people can “drive” them with a paper sack over their heads.
Not a fan of the black step at the front of the bed. It interferes with the body line. Custom, to me, is the best looking one there is. Again, my opinion. I am excited about the new gas motor. The 6.0 was way overdue for a change. I would buy a custom trim gas v8 before anything else. Had an LBZ diesel but will go for gas in the future. It is almost a dollar cheaper per gallon where I am and the cost of ownership is way more than the gas truck. If I towed often, I could see the diesel but for me, it is gas. On a sidebar, why are 3/4 ton trucks so tall? It is unneeded. Bring back a normal height truck. The heavy duty suspension will fit under it. If it doesn’t, make it fit. ( Like they used to)
The designers must be the ones that designed the scion van.
I agree with all the comments here and actually saw the truck at New York International Car Show. It really don’t look much better up close. This should turn out to be a banner year for GMC which does look much better.
Yawn………………
You can yawn all you want but fact is Chevrolet needs to build trucks that are not only dependable but something that also looks good. Based on many comments here, 75% of the people here don’t care for the looks of the front end. I myself would not spend $50k on a truck that I don’t like the looks of! I asked at the show if there was a delete option for the side step in the bed? There is not. The step I could live with, the front end not so much. Fleet managers are the only people who don’t care what it looks like as long as it’ll do the the job, but they generally buy on price point. That is not necessarily the market GM is trying to sell to.
I have NEVER owned anything but GM trucks. Between the significant repairs I’ve have to make to my two current trucks (>$6K in repairs on a ’15 & a ’16, and still don’t have the transmission issues fixed on the ’16), and the UGLY styling on these new ones, I cannot fathom dropping $50K on another GM truck.
Tough looking trucks that are purpose built to specification.
Where are the EV trucks. Tesla will beat GM again on EV truck release
I’m wondering if GM is working on a deal with Workhorse? GM is trying to sell the Lordstown plant to Workhorse for the production of the W-15 ev pickup. If you look at the W-15, it looks to be using the last generation GM cab. This could also play into GM’s plans for additional jobs in Canada manufacturing body parts for the assembly work at Lordstown.
It’s not about being first, it’s about making money. Be first all you want, and it gets you nothing but losses. Just ask Tesla.
GM is set to released an All Electric Truck here in the near future, but we have to remember, though there is a lot of Buzz Talk in the news about these vehicles, most of the nation in terms of Affordabilty, Logistical Support as far as Public Recharging Stations is still not ready to consume these vehicles and half of the public currently don’t care to have one at this point along with the current Administration not even giving consumers a Tax Break if they own one, the same one who feels that Climate Change is nothing more than “Hot Air” talk.
It’s Trumps fault that there are no electric trucks on the market…
Sure.
I stated that the consumer will not receive a Tax Break under the current Administration if they choose to purchase an electric vehicle, nothing in my post was stated that #45 is the reason why those vehicles have not been built and not on the market, the consumer will determine how long that vehicle will stay on the market after they arrive at dealerships, not the president…Is that better for you????
these trucks really do look super bizarre, and I’m a fan of GM design language. I think stylistically they nailed it, I like the actual design elements, such as how the lights look, how the trim wraps up and around the inside of the lights, etc. But it’s just too tall and square. The combination of the ridiculously tall front end, with the swooping low swept windshield, looks incredibly awkward. It’s like, how much is the windswept windshield really doing when it is sitting atop and behind this massive brick at the front of the truck?
It’s just insane looking. And then you have the fake hood scoop sitting on top of all the rest of it. I think they just went completely overboard. They need to start over using the same language and design elements, and just bring the hood line down a couple inches, kill the fake hood scoop, maybe bring down the lights at the side a little, do something, anything, to make it not look like a gigantic sheet of plywood with a cool drawing of the front of a truck coming at you.
The hood scoop is anything but fake. It’s fully functional.

This carried over from the 2017s.
The taller hood was driven by the bigger cooling package neccesitated by the truck’s key design element of increased capability and the GCWR. Lower the hood abs you have a K2XX.
Get a plunger because GM is going down the drain.
People said that when the 1500 debuted, but they sadly miscalculated that prediction, it’ll be the same for this truck here, a lot of customers will want a truck that sets them apart from every other pick up out there in terms of appearance and they’ll get just that.
What’s a “Comm Fin?”
Its a satellite antenna. Its for GPS and HD Radio.
If GM is going after the quirky look to catch up to Ford, then this is the right truck!!
They all look the same from the side…..ugly.
They look mean from the front. Are you sure they’re different models? They all look the same, except for the wheels/door handles. Recently tried out a 2015 Silverado LT,(thinking to replace my old Silverado), it felt big, bulky, cumbersome,& rode like a lumber truck. I found the interior very plain. The seats were hard.,Was very disappointed. Ended up going for a very well looked after 2010 Sierra,LTZ. It had all the bells whistles, it’s fast, agile in traffic & those leather seats are ohhhhh, sooooo comfortable! The dash is not some huge hunk of aluminium,& I like the ‘wood’ grain trim on my dash/doors. Come on GM, as far as I’m concerned, you are letting us down! And I wish you would bring back the shaded windshields!!
Looks like someone went down the tacky aisle with the crap magnet on.
Is hood scoop on the gas motor fake
They are not handsome trucks. I’m sure they are tough and very capable but so was that fat girl and smart girl you never asked out in high school because the other chick was smoking hot!
GM design is awful these days and I’m sure some of the designers read these comments, well, instead of giving thumbs down and sticking your head in the sand, why not listen to these comments? The front end on the previous HD’s were very handsome and even stately looking, classy!
This “shock and awe” thing is not working on the 1500 or 2500. There are things to like about either model but the looks is not one of them and unfortunately that goes along way in as buyers decision. Nobody wants to drop 50 k on something ugly.
“Nobody wants to drop 50k on something ugly.” Exactly!
I just couldn’t do it. Seeing one in person at TMS this spring let me check it out. Loved the cab, interior, box side step, DEF filler relocated next to the fuel filler, etc. Understand they needed more open area for cooling air, but I just couldn’t take the front end. Luckily I found a 2019 LTZ Dually all blacked out almost identical to the one I attempted to order in March, but it was too late. I think these 2020’s are technically awesome, but I just can’t get past the face, no matter how great her body is…
Your option for a new decent looking truck is GMC! GMC HD trucks are more of a evolution of their previous generation design theme. Poor sales or offering major incentives to sell trucks will get them to fix the front end real quick!
Can we get one for the GMC’s?
