Hennessey Performance Engineering is known for its ridiculously powerful tunes for different General Motors LS engines, but the company also has some more modest upgrade packages in its catalog that are well suited to vehicles that are driven daily.
One such tune is the HPE500 upgrade kit for the 5.3-liter L83 V8 powered Chevrolet Tahoe. This package boosts the output of the 355 horsepower engine to a healthy 508 horsepower, giving it more power, but not so much that it is no longer a comfortable and reliable daily driver.
Included in the package is a 2.9-liter supercharger, high-flow intercooler and a new HPE engine management calibration system. HPE also backs it up with a 3-year, 36,000 miles warranty, which is important for any aftermarket upgrade work, but especially so for a daily driven SUV such as a Tahoe.
In a recent video for its YouTube channel, HPE filmed one its mechanics doing a smoky burnout and donut in a HPE 500-equipped Chevrolet Tahoe. The customer, who was riding shotgun for the rather comical SUV donut, told the company the vehicle was set to have some new rubber put on it soon anyway, so they may as well have some fun and burn the old tires down.
This video sort of reminds us of when GM’s Saudi Arabian division took the Chevrolet Tahoe RST drifting around the Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit, demonstrating what this body-on-frame SUV can do in the right hands.

You would think that GM would offer this type of power from the factory. There are customers willing to pay.
It’s common sense that Chevrolet who makes the C7 Corvette should make their base 6.2L V8 available for usage by Chevy’s own Tahoe; but common sense goes out the window.. because Mary Barra is GM’s CEO, the Queen of Bone Head Ideas and reason why we still have yet to have any other electric vehicle than the Chevy Bolt despite her promises.
That looks really intelligent… 500 hp and 6500 lb and you’re still slow.
Gee. Just what I always wanted to do with an SUV. Makes me want to run right out and buy…!
