More Owners Complain Of GM Transmission Defect Amid Pending Lawsuit

This past April, a class-action lawsuit surfaced as consumers bound together to voice their displeasure over General Motors vehicles. Specifically, models equipped with the eight-speed automatic transmission. Now, more owners are speaking out.

Local North Carolina news station Action 9 WSOCTV reported on one local owner who showed the problem off for the camera. While the lawsuit alleges shakes, jerks, or a “hard shift” when selecting a gear with the automatic transmission, this owner highlighted the “Chevy shudder,” as he called it. At speed, he showed the steering wheel shuddering and shaking. He claims the problem is nearly constant in his $52,000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

GM told the news station that owners should visit a dealership to walk through the protocols with a technician to solve the problem. Numerous technical service bulletins (13 as of this past April) exist for issues like so many owners describe in their vehicles.

The transmission is the 8L90 or 8L45 automatic transmission, which is found in numerous GM vehicles. The transmission pairs to cars on a rear-wheel-drive architecture, meaning owners of GM’s sports cars, luxury sedans, trucks, and SUVs have the 8-speed automatic transmission in question. A full list of vehicles that house the transmission is below:

Supposedly, the problem is most common when accelerating or decelerating as the transmission moves to select another gear, though, it’s not specific to a gear in particular.

In the lawsuit filed earlier this year, owners said the issue may be the torque converter, which could be exposed to undue friction. In this case, gears may not function properly as metal shavings move throughout the transmission. We need to note this is not a definite cause and only an alleged problem stated in the lawsuit.

  1. 100% unacceptable. How is it that FCA’s RWD based ZF 8 speed shifts perfectly fine and has been a rugged unit and GM keeps screwing up on their transmissions? And we are supposed to trust GM power-train for self driving and fully electric vehicles? When will these clowns get it into their academic bean counter skulls that what you do today in the here and now is going to fully dictate how your company is going to be perceived moving forward. They have burned so many bridges and here we are in 2019 with more half baked unfinished crap. And its not like this transmission just came out. There have been enough years where this nonsense should have been corrected by now! Its a shame that it takes a lawsuit to get a main part of your new 50-100K GM product corrected that you spent your hard earned money on.

    1. FCA’s ZF 8 speed has NOT been rugged and reliable. My brother’s 2014 Grand Cherokee was in the shop several times for transmission issues including refusing to shift out of 2nd gear, another time wouldn’t shift into ANY gear. He now owns a 2015 Silverado that has zero issues.

      1. The Grand Cherokee is a chrysler made little bro. of the mopar brand! It’s either the assembly or the material make-up of the components size choices is the fault inside of each “transmission of any brand-maker’s”!! If 1 assembly copy is assembled differently; then that’s the issue! From assembly plant-hot rodding!

        1. Recently purchased a 2020 GMC Canyon v6 4×4 truck in July. The shift between First and second is rough and clunky when the truck is cold. Currently there is 150 km on the truck. The steering wheel is also 10 degrees off center on the straight sections of the highway. It appears that the driver’s wheel was not centered properly during the factory wheel alignment. I am losing confidence in this $ 50,000 plus GMC truck. They will not win customers by selling problems ! ☹️

    2. The ZF 8 speed automatic is among the best transmissions in the world. GM uses the in-house solution to save money. They know it’s crap but the bean counters figured they could abuse their customers for a few years until the 10A was ready.

      1. The ZF 8 spd might be good, but the FCA-built licensed versions suck something awful, especially the 845RE/850RE behind the Pentastar V-6. Lots of software/electronics issues, solenoids, parking pawl issues, bad valve bodies, etc. Those behind the V-8 are supposed to be better…maybe…if you get one of the ones made in Germany…

GM is no better or worse than any other manufacturers. It all depends on specific models with specific options if you have a chance of getting a good one or a lemon. Step right up and roll the dice…

        1. Meanwhile, my 2014 Grand Cherokee with the 845RE, Pentastar, and tow package has done amazing ever since the software updates were applied to correct shift behavior.

The ZF 8-speed is absolutely one of the best designed and best executed automatic transmissions in the business, finding use in everything from compact luxury cars to SUVs to 1500 series trucks all the way up to the Rolls Royce Phantom/Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga.

    3. I have a 2020 Chevy Silverado Custom with 8,200 miles. Last night while trick was idling at a drive thru the check engine light came on. When I went to drive away the truck shuddered hard. I pulled over turned truck off cranked it back up. Check engine light still on. I tried to drive it to dealer and it wouldn’t shift out if first even manually. Truck RPM would go up but transmission wouldn’t shift. I had to have truck towed to dealership. I have only made 3 payments so far. Seems like this is a on going transmission issue.

      1. They are junk trannys, and GM customer service is of no help what so ever! I called to file complaint about my 2016 Silverado tranny and all I got is that they are aware of the problem

        Reply
        1. You’re lucky they recognized the problem. My dealer told me they are unaware of any complaints with their transmissions. I said, there is a fkn class action lawsuit over it and the only reason I know about it cause my rear end locked up during a downshift from 3rd to 2nd gear and nearly gave me a heart attack.. Essentially the rear end didn’t lock up because of defective rear end, it was the transmission locking up for 1 second during the shift that caused the rear wheel to lock up and squeal

      3. That isn’t the transmission. It’s likely a misfiring cylinder, possibly due to the AFM. It happened to my 18’ Sierra today. Getting it towed to the dealership tomorrow. Should be warrantied, but afterwards I’m buying the Range AFM Disabler, which disables the V4 mode and is reported to reduce the AFM issues. Just be sure to remove it before taking the truck in for service.

Now at 25,000 it some times pauses between 1 and 2 gears, but the very worst is the ( feels like I have been rear ended by another car). This happens at near stopped motion. At times it is very server.

      5. I had the same issue a my 2020 GMC AT4. Had to wait 4 hours on the interstate for a wrecker. Dealer said transmission needed to be reprogrammed. Now I’m seeing all these comments and realize there is a bigger problem, and all this happened at the 550 mile mark on the odometer. Now at 4000 miles, I went to leave the house this evening and it is dead as as dead gets. Lights up the cluster, but does nothing else. Starter does not even engage. I am of the belief I have purchased a lemon! Although, I’m sure the manufacturer would not agree. So far I would not recommend GMC to anyone.

I did, and its been in the shop now for 4 weeks while waiting my turn just to get looked at, order and receive a new transmission, then installation. Im out the use of my truck for a month that Im still making payments on. Feels like I’m paying for nothing. Also kept me from my trip because I dont trust the loaner vehicle. 5. There has been a problem with these transmissions since 2015 and the only action offered in 5 years is a change in transmission fluid ? There seems to be a recurring personification theme going on that a transmission is learning, but usually transmissions get worse over time not better. So if there is a problem when still relatively new what will it be like after 30 to 40 thousand miles ? The transmission should function properly from the start. I have a 1986 Chevy Wrangler with a bullet proof transmission, the eight speeds are far from that. GMC needs to identify the problems and fix them, rather than blowing smoke up everyone’s ass. When people spend their hard earned money on a product , in this
case 50 to 100 thousand dollars , they expect the product to last a reasonable length of time. It is not just about selling a vehicle, but also about winning a loyal customer base for the future. I have been a GM / Chevy customer for 40 years , but this ongoing GM transmission issue has really pissed me off. In the light of the GM eight speed a 15 year warranty would not be enough. If any of this new multi speed transmission stuff is for improved fuel economy, I say screw the mileage thing a build a strong transmission. I would rather paid 5 dollars a litre for fuel than have a crappy transmission in a new vehicle.

  2. General Motors customer service at its finest.

Or General Motors LACK of customer service.

Or General Motors LACK of customer respect.

Or General Motors TERRIABLE customer experience.

Whatever your General Motors KNOWN FAULTY PARTS issues are, In the eyes of General motors, you are complaining.

General Motors, take your vehicle to the dealer, so the dealer can charge the CUSTOMER more money.

General Motors, use the lemon law, so that will cost the CUSTOMER more money.

General motors, hire an attorney, so that will cost the CUSTOMER more money.

I am curious when General Motors receives KNOWN FAULTY PARTS from a supplier that are out of spec, is GENERAL MOTORS complaining when they address the KNOWN FAULTY parts with the suppliers QUALITY department ?

    WHO labeled this complaining ?

Customer complaints. Makes it sound like its the customers fault they bought a FAULTY vehicle.

You know you had a choice, you didn’t have to buy a GM vehicle, now live with it !!!

That would be fine if the product was represented as FAULTY at purchase.

In General Motors eyes, unless this, or any other, KNOWN FAULTY PART, costs human life, or is deemed a safety concern by the government, GM has ZERO responsibility to do anything, and if GM does fix a KNOWN FAULTY part issue GM thinks they are doing you – us – the CUSTOMER a favor.

GM ” we build a truck for work”, the fan boys, ” if you buy another brand it will fail you “. Seriously, JUST LIKE THIS !!!

You can’t have it both ways, either GM builds a quality product and stands behind it, or they don’t.
You can’t say you do, and follow that comment up with NOTHING, a LAWSUIT, a LEMON LAW.

GM, if you can’t fix the transmission, buy back the vehicles, or give a working replacement.

GM surely won’t buy them back, they don’t want a KNOWN FAULTY VEHICLE.

    In my opinion!!!

  3. Owning one of these and knowing what is really going on here is what is known.

#1 not all transmissions are having this issue. The majority are working fine but their is an larger than normal number with this issue.

#2 GM has been trying to solver this. Early on they did electronic programming. They then would change the converter. Later they even changed the transmissions. All this did not solve the issue. Now they have gone though a series of new transmission fluid to deal with what is claimed a moisture absorption issue with the original fluid. Mobil One has made several fluids and the latest appears to be working in most cases so far.

#3 a large number of people also have done the buy out with GM as they have done many with no issues.

Now some here like to rant on topics they have no connection to. But I as an owner on this have monitored this for the last couple years with people on the forums that have the issues and also I keep up with the TSB’s.

The other thing I have learned is that GM is not alone as several other MFGs have had moisture issues with their fluids and it also created Shudder in their vehicles.

The latest TSB is using a new Mobile One fluid and a new machine that totally flushes the transmission and converter. It is easy to get done by just contacting the dealer and having it done. So far it appears to fix most of the issues due to this.

The real question is why are only some having this issue?

My Canyon had a Seal issue that would let the converter drain back early on and the dealer fixed it with a new converter and transmission. As of now my transmission is flawless in shift.

This is what really is happening. I have skin in this game and at this point I am not worried. I expect GM will announce a extended time on the flush TSB for higher time or miles to cover owners.

As many gun owner know today many new transmission fluids have very different Hygroscopic qualities today and many can absorb moisture.

Audi had issues just like this and in their case it was traced back to transmission coolers leaking in the radiator. Where the moisture from the GM issue is coming from is unknown. But also why are only some having the issue while others are just fine?

    Reply
    1. “The real question is why are only some having this issue?” No idea. I have a 2019 Canyon V6 4×4 (8-speed) and I have some rough shifting at times at very low speeds (think parking lot speeds or stop sign to stop sign on short streets). I don’t notice it at higher speeds (normal 30 mph city or highway speeds).

      Reply
      1. The low speed hard shift is normal. If the driveline is under a load it is not there. Also cold effects it. While a nuance it is not the problem.

The issue is the shudder and it will shake a vehicle hard at 40-45 mph. If you have it you will not miss it.

My hard first to second gear is not like it was when new and warm fluid makes it go away. I know what you mean for sure though.

        1. Good to know. I am just shy of 1800 miles on my Canyon after a month and a half of ownership.

          1. I am 3 years in and mine is not like it was new. I suspect the programming int he transmission has adjusted to it. The transmission has a learn feature and it takes time to adjust.

I still get a firm shift after sitting out all day at work in 20 degree or colder temps but in 3 miles it goes away.

It often is worse if you lift on the gas before it shifts. If it is under load it is smooth.

If you have the shudder issue it is mostly 40-45 mph and often going up a grade. it is like a slipping clutch. It can be mild or it can shake like a mother. If you feel anything like this take it to the dealer and they will flush it out. That should fix it.

            1. scott3, I took my Silverado in for the fluid change (and they said they had a program update for hard shifts). They had a technician go out on a test drive with me, and we felt the hard shift, but not the shutter. They kept it a week and when I got back they said they didn’t change anything because they didn’t duplicate the problem. Any magic phrase they need to hear? Any voodoo dance I can do to get these TSBs completed? Thank you.

              Reply
              1. No magic. If it is doing the hard shift take them for a drive to show them.

To be honest the hard shift that is the problem is mostly 1-2 gears. I have noted like I stated it got better after driving it more. Today I have little feel of the shift between those gears. Now it did not start out like that. Also will it remain that way by next winter?

Even then it is not any worse than the shift in my old Turbo 350 or 400.

You may also try another dealer as not all service departments bare the same.

I think he key was my service manager keeping my truck several day setting the shift point was a help.

                1. scot3, thank you for your input. They had my truck for a week, which would have been OK if the outcome was favorable. I’m at 1900 miles and the shift are starting to smooth out. I’m still planning on taking it to the dealership in the next town however.

          2. Our 2019 Canyon Denali 4×4 started getting the vibration/shudder at 5200 miles…I think we caught it early, because it’s still at the random “feels like driving over rumble strips” phase. Took it back to the dealership, and they knew exactly the symptoms I was talking about, and said it needs the flush and fill with the new fluid (per the TSB). Big issue right now is that they’ve had the truck for a week and a half, because their one technician that knows how to do it is out sick…

      1. Here is the reality of life. Things can go bad or be faulty. Be it a cheap watch or a $400K Rolls Royce. If it is made by man it can fail.

In fact todays automobiles are much more complex than many of the first space craft that took man to space. The computers alone on the shuttle were less than the Chevy Sonic.

My experience is I have had few problems over the years with a great number of cars. I did have a problem on my transmission but I just took it to the dealer they gave me a new Denali Acadia and then proceeded to take a couple days to replace the transmission and tune it. It takes 8 hours between tunes on the transmission to make it so I do not have to experience the the learning period that would have been activating.

There is not a model out there without a TSB or Recall. If I have a problem and the dealer fixes it we are all good.

$hit happens and if it does as long as they fix it fast and correctly I have no beef.

Sorry if I am not in the sky is falling mode like you but it is more about how things are dealt with.

If I had a bad experience I would say so but I am not going to make up some beef of something that did not happen or did not effect me just to fit your view.

And what do you mean, lawyers representing owners who did not ask for help ??

Are you saying the owners of GM transmissions that do not work to spec did not ask to have them fixed before they spent the time to start or join a lawsuit ?

Again you blame the CUSTOMER for a problem you yourself said you would have a beef with if yours was not FIXED, FAST and CORRECTLY !!!

And AGAIN I say good for you and all the others out there who have had this and other FAULTY KNOWN PARTS, fixed, fast, and correctly !!!

          1. You do understand these are class action lawsuits and how they really Work? Or should I say not work?

Ok take a problem like this transmission shudder. Yes there is a problem a small number of owners have been experiencing the issue but more than normal.

GM has been and is still trying to resolve this. As of now it appears they may have found a solution but it will take more time to make sure the flush is going to resolve this.

Then enter 5he opportunist lawyers who take out a class action suit for all the owners of the trucks. They generally as of one person to start it then they solicit more to join them saying they will represent you and help you out.

These law firms move on these cases because they know large companies will settle with them to go away because it is cheaper to pay out $20 million vs fighting to win at $10” million.

Once these settlements are reached the owners of these trucks can expect some kind of token from GM like free oil changes or $500 off the next vehicle. While the law firm takes a majority of the settlement in legal fees it is charging in the case.

In the end you the owner gets a token deal while the law firm makes millions off of your issue. You still have the truck and you have nothing to show for this accept some worthless certificates.

The reality is most owners can easily take their vehicle to the dealer with the TSB number that is on the web and have the service done with no drama and no need to line the pockets of s siren chasing lawyer. The fix is clearly defined.

As for if this does not fix it the lemon laws are in place and if you visit the forums you will find GM has easily bought back a number of vehicles over the last 3 years.

Now you can play the victim all you like but you can not fool those who know the truth. This is something I have watched for the last 3-4 years. You can place al, the BS here you like but it does not change the truth.

In your world the sky is continually falling. Any one here can read you post and see it is the same thing different part or car every time.

I am not sure if you are a paid troll or just squirrel bait. I wager the latter. You would present a better argument if you were a paid troll.

Check out Bobs experience below. He confirms what I stated.

If you have a dealer not willing to do the right thing go elsewhere. GM has too many dealers as it is and too often idiots just keep going back expecting better results. Only patronize the better dealers and the poor ones will fail.

That’s the kicker YOU can not get !!!

This is a GM CUSTOMER SERVICE PROBLEM !!!!!!

It is NOT one FAULTY PART or one vehicle !!!!!

It is ALL the FAULTY PARTS on ALL the GM vehicles !!!!

              The Corvette wheels !

              The Cadillac SRX headlights !

              The 8 speed transmissions !!

The 3.6 timing chain at 70,000 miles !!

The head gaskets on the NorthStar !!!

The gas tank vent solenoid on the Canyon !!

The manual automatic switch on the ATS !!

The steering rack at low rpm on the Enclave !!

And so, so many more the CUSTOMER is just left paying for but you get a GM letter saying they might fail because GM knows there is a problem !!

SAME problem, ONE thing in common, GM LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!

You see when it happens to YOU and YOU don’t get YOUR vehicle ” Fixed, Fast, and Correctly. ” and you can’t do anything about it but a lawsuit, I don’t do lawsuits, I agree they do NOT work.

                1. Scott3, you certainly are a condescending, arrogant person. LifelongGMowner has a short list, or subset, if you will, of the myriad distressing GM failures. My issues with a 2009 GMC Sierra have been minor, but troubling nonetheless. I have not pursued going to another dealership, but I am troubled by your callous attitude.
                  2009 GMC Sierra:

1st – The Steering began making a disturbing whine, under warranty, and the dealer repaired it, supposedly be replacing the rack and pinion. Now I am out of warranty and the whine has returned. I’m told it is not a fail, just live with it. So far it still works, but the whining sound is disturbing… that is not right. GM doesn’t care.

2nd – I had two power door lock motors replaced, under warranty, when they stopped working. I was at 38,000 miles when a third door lock motor failed, but when I appealed to the dealership, they SAID they checked with GM and were denied warranty coverage for mileage. Yes, I was out of warranty, yes, a manufacturer can’t be expected to cover parts that wear out after a certain age or mileage. I get that. That said, there are two sides to that deal. When a manufacturer discovers that a given part is failing as a regular course of events, like 2 power door lock motors within 30,000 miles, and one more at 38,000 miles, it is NOT a “wear out” issue… It is a faulty part that just waited a little longer to break down. This SHOULD have been covered, based on historical warranty.

3rd – The power folding mirrors for GM vehicles have a spur gear made of cheap plastic. This gear is under high stress at the conclusion of each fold operation, and is easily broken if ever somebody manually folds the mirror in, or out, whether in a “bump” or intentional mischief. The original build is reasonably well thought out, but has been compromised by inferior parts quality.

4th – The transmission on my truck is now shifting hard, intermittantly, at just 80,000 miles. It seems to be something that only happens at low speed, when I go from gentle acceleration to coasting, such as stop and go traffic. I will take it in to the dealer soon, with the hope that there is some inexpensive cure, since I am rather skeptical that there will be any satisfaction from GM, judging from their past performance. I really hope they will surprise me with stellar attention and “as long as they fix it fast and correctly I have no beef.”

I won’t hold my breath until they do, although THEY might just be fine with that.

Yes, sometimes things go wrong, and a company has to gear up to deal with faulty parts. GM has a track record of LOTS of faulty parts (or just poor materials) and a lack of interest in correcting problems in a DURABLE fashion.

That is why the lawsuits. They reap what they sow.

            2. I’ve had tires road force balanced, two replaced, trans flushed, violent shake occurred again, trans flushed triple with newer fluids, shudder now shows at slower speeds (20-35 mph), highway shudder is same, just slightly less but there at 55-70 mph, reset on transmission computer has no real effect after having driven an additional 300 plus miles. The drive train sucks. Something is not responding to the work that was done to alleviate the shake. Now a new shudder driving around the neighborhood has to be considered acceptable. BS! GM too cheap to take care of my truck. Service mgr and sales mgr says GM will not compensate for shaking considered acceptable. Willing to post sign on my truck outside the main driveway with a sign “Don’t buy Silver Vibrator” You’ll be screwed! No satisfaction in just over a year. Purchased used with 6800 miles and drove to FL twice from Boston area. Will not go on long trips again. It’s that annoying. Makes me sick to think I spent $40k for a vibrator that looks good but taking a ride in it sucks. I never heard of GM buying back any trucks with 8 speed issue. What is suggested to get them to offer that type of deal?

They said they were going to first try this??? Just spoke to them transmission failure on test drive I wonder what they will try now is it going to still going to cost $2800 to try something that didn’t work?? My truck is a 2016 with just over 100,000 miles oh by the way they just did a complete transmission drop the pan change filter service for $600.00 less than 20,000 miles ago.

When I get into any of my other cars, including an ’04 Saab 9-3 with a 6-speed and a ’12 Suzuki Kizash with a CVT, both cars shift smooth as butter. Why should anyone put up with this, especially in a $60k car?

            3. scott3: “Well out of the millions of vehicles using these only a small percentage are suffering issues.”

How would you know how many are suffering issues?

Many drivers put up with the hard shifts, rather than face the out of pocket repair costs they anticipate, based on past experience with GM refusing to stand behind their products, and extend the warranty on defects that are clearly quality control related, or faulty parts that were never right to begin with.

Maybe there are MILLIONS of GM vehicle owners with frustrating transmission problems that really need to be fixed, but they can’t afford the time and money to get them straightened out, so they just plod along suffering, until the transmission gets so bad it breaks down completely. Then, because they are fed up with being treated so insensitively by a rogue manufacturer, they buy a new vehicle, from anyone OTHER than GM.

Has THAT ever occurred to you?

It is clear to me that GM really does not appreciate my loyalty, or my business.

The most reliable vehicle GM has ever made is the Pontiac Vibe, and they abandoned that product line when Pontiac was excised from their brand lineup.

            4. Not true check your facts. Trucks to corvettes to caddy’s all suffering from same problem. If you owed one of these vehicles that were affected you would feel differently. The problem is not the issue it’s the fact that GM will not do the right thing. Why should a pay for a truck then pay to half way fix it and by the way temporarily?

The issue is that my truck was not over mileage limits and they still wanted to charge me to perform the flush. Why should I pay for their mistakes and why should they even suggest a customer pays for the flush regardless of the miles on the vehicle. This goes back to doing the right thing.

I would rather pay 5 dollars a litre for fuel than have a crappy transmission in a new vehicle.

    5. GM changed out my fluid close to 60,000 miles before my power train warranty went out. It did great for 4,000 miles and now it’s a crap shoot of how it will work from day to day. Last week I had to drive into Corpus Christi and at every stop that day it slammed from second to first so hard I thought someone hit me from behind. This past Sunday my son used it to drive a couple of blocks to run an errand. When he put it in gear it didn’t move, just revved up and all of a sudden slammed into gear and jumped forward. He back and told me I should trade it off, that is dangerous to drive. What do I trade it for when it seems that Ford and Dodge have problems also?

    1. Hey James – what’d you end up replacing it with?? We bought a 2020 Silverado a few days ago and the shuddering is awful!! Even at low speeds and in stop & go traffic it’s really bad. I searched online and saw it could be the driveshaft, or the transmission/fluid, just to name a few. Also, the shifter is really hard to shift out of park – is this a common issue too? I’m taking it into the dealership this week to have them take a look at it. It’s crazy to me that this isn’t a recall but I guess it can’t be since they haven’t figured out a solution. We considered a Tundra but the low mpg scared us away. Now I wish we would have – I’d sacrifice a few miles for a smooth running truck

  5. It isn’t a safety issue. The transmissions aren’t leaving the owners in the middle of traffic on a busy highway per what I’ve heard.

This is an issue with unmet expectations. Maybe in the future there will be higher failure rates on the transmission or other components, but only time will tell if they happen near or before warranty expiration.

To win a lawsuit, the plaintiffs will need one of two things to happen.

    1) They will need to show that there is some sort of contractual breech on performance or the issue is so far out of normal expectations that it is grievous in nature. A small vibration at certain speeds and occasional rough shift may not be considered grievous. However, it will be up to a judge or jury to determine just how expensive is expensive enough to say that there shouldn’t be ANY issues in the operation of the transmission.

    2) GM decides it is cheaper to buy back the vehicles or cash compensate than to fight a customer experience issue.

    Reply
    1. If you had one of these trucks you would know it is not a small vibration. It feels like you are running over rumble strips on the edge of the road. I love all of the people on hear speaking on something they know nothing about. It is an issue and it will eventually be a safety issue as the torque converter is slowly eroding inside the transmission. The vibration is the lockup converter slipping , the slipping causes wear which introduces metal shavings into the fluid and then through the rest of the transmission. So to answer your statement a transmission should not be doing this and it hurts the value of the vehicles.

  6. Actually the lawsuits are generally only going to enrich the lawyers.

What will happen is GM will come up with some settlement just to save money and the lawyers will take most of the settlement as legal fees for representing the owners who never asked for help.

This will result in a free oil change or a $500 on the next vehicle you buy.

The real trouble is they can not prove GM is not or has not tried to solve this. The fact is GM has been working on this for a while now and the documents and dealer actions show it.

Now they have not solved it because it appears they have had a difficult time determining what was causing it. If they all were going bad it would have been much easier to resolve.

When they replaced transmissions with little effect it was a sign it was a deeper issue.

On the forum we have tried to find a similar issue with those who have the problem but there has not been any clear cut issue like regional conditions or use.

It appears to be in the converter and the fluid is playing a major part of it as it is not letting the clutch lock up.

Right now the new fluid is in play since Dec. It has been the best thing yet. How long will it work only time will tell and we are watching.

It used to be we had only two transmission fluid and today we have nearly a dozen. The things being asked of transmissions are more than ever in the history of the motor vehicle. It just makes more potential for more issue to happen.

Google shudder and you will find names like Audi, VW, Toyota, Mazda, Ford, Chrysler etc all have had cases of similar issues.

I will follow GM into bankruptcy again but NOT quietly.

And if more GM CUSTOMERS commented we would not be stuck with a 2.0T in a 4000lb Cadillac and a HORRIBLE dash in a $70,000.00 + truck. (asked 7000 customers crap ). Those 7000 customers are probably driving RAM now.

Also the guy in the video called the local news and I somehow rant and rave, what ?

So ONE MORE TIME, I am just writing comments on a new product GM site to make new customers aware that GM has HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE !!

All my GM vehicles are fine, I have owned great ones and terrible ones, again the last three among the terrible ones, but its the change in GM customer service that has made the experience even worse, just horrible at times.

  12. One commenter nailed it, GM has known about it for years. Toyota had a bulletproof 4.0l and 5 spd auto. Screwed it up with the 3.5l Atkinson-cycle and 6 spd auto. Hardcore Taco owners hate ‘em, the market for pre ‘16 Taco is hot. To Toyota credit they didn’t have a HW problem with the trans, like GM. Their 6 spd auto just doesn’t play well with the Atkinson cycle, and never will. Notice how many ‘16 and up Tacos for sale. Right now the Frontier 4.0 l and 5spd auto is probably the best buy, warts and all. It’ll go 200K miles with nary a problem. My local Chevy dealer is practically giving away Colorado V6 8L45, but I won’t touch one. GM should have evolved the 4L60 to a 5L60 then 6L60, just like Toyota, Honda and Nissan did.

Non-billet quality aluminum cracks under use demands and high heat, and plastic check valves shrink and leak, causing pressure drops which trigger sensors to react to pressure drops. This is an example of poor QC and customer service.
It does shudder in the lower gears but is hard to isolate it to a particular gear by holding it in gear and manually shifting and doesn’t shudder when cold.
It had the steering wheel buzz at 70-75 mph the first week I had it. The frequency seemed to be higher than tire balance more like driveline speed. The service rep said they load balanced the tires and matched the “high points on the rims(It has mag wheels! common with welded steel wheels) with the high points on the tires. The vibration went away but since the shudder arose and I started experimenting at different speeds I noticed it is back at 60mph.
So now I have an appointment on the 26 to fix the problem.
I would be quite happy with the 6 speed like my Traverse.I don’t mind feeling the trans shift rather than add all the complex mechanisms and added wear to make to make it silky smoothe.

Took it to the dealer and was told its a bent rim and since the corrosion has not broken through, there is nothing they can do. So I replaced the rim and yet still a shake shudder thing and the trans feels like its going to fall out. For paint, I opened a ‘case’ with GM. Was told they would give me a 3000 voucher for a new vehicle. I loved my Diesel Colorado a lot but I cannot overlook the terrible craftsmanship and customer service. Wait till your air conditioning condenser goes. My went this spring they did not cover it at all! they’re covering it on many other vehicles of theirs with the same issue bad weld. A recall for others but not the Silverado same part same bad weld. “Stick it to the Silverado people they can afford it” that’s what they’re thinking, we don’t want to go bankrupt again… don’t give anything back maybe they’ll go away. After my truck gets out of the body shop is going straight to the dealer for the transmission issue. I did open a complaint with GM regarding my transmission. see how it goes. Rented a Ford truck 2019 10 speed transmission with their V6 engine got to say that transmission is smooth as butter, I can’t feel it shifting, I can’t feel it downshifting… no shutter no slipping no banging. that’s how my truck should feel for what I paid. Never thought I’d say I’d be thinking about buying a Ford, now I’m thinking how do I get my wife to let me trade this car in and buy a different one. 26. 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 High Country. Most expensive vehicle I’ve ever owned! Over $60,000. I have owned three Chevy’s prior to this, purchased all three new from same dealer. never had a problem with any of them until now. I used to brag about how happy I was to be a Chevy owner not anymore. I too am having transmission problems been having them since the day I purchased my 2015 Silverado High Country 1500 new in 2016. problems started with only a few hundred miles on it, with hard shifting, slipping and banging and now the vibrating. Some of these issues were worse when the engine was cold, Then I would go for a long time with no prolems at all. The shuttering that I experienced was not the engine going from 8-cylinder to 4-cylinders, that I was used to already my 2007 Avalanche did that also between 8 in 4 cylinder mode. that I could deal with. My problem now is trans slips, also vibrates at times feels like I’m driving a tank with tank tracks instead of rubber tires. Doesn’t happen all the time, does it when it feels like. During cold weather my transmission won’t even go into gear for a few seconds seems like an eternity. If I’m in a hurry I’ll start the engine drop it into gear reverse or drive doesn’t matter, push the gas hear the engine rev but no movement briefly then a loud bang from the transmission, feels like you’ve just been rear-ended. Then that doesn’t happen for weeks drives and seem to shift and drive fine. The same Bang problem will happen while I’m driving also. once I get down to someplace between first and second gear not to a complete stop you can feel it downshifting hard then I get some place between 2nd and 1st gear bingo. I’m getting so used to it now I’m psychologically getting ready for it to bang again, truck will feel exactly like you have just been rear-ended by somebody doing about 30 miles an hour, I’m still at a crawl not a complete stop is when it happens. I’ll accelerate you can feel is not responding for just an instant can’t seem to find itself and then Bang. My wife is having neck problems because of it now! It’s the same as getting whiplashed banging to first gear. The other day I was at an intersection creeping up to the intersection the light was changing to red, creeping through the intersection some Place between first and second gear again, it was wet out it had just rained, the roads were very slick, transmission does its thing again, this time it’s sent the rear wheel spinning and my truck into a 360 in the middle of the intersection. This is clearly becoming a safety issue somebody can get killed. This truck is no longer safe to drive. I will be taking my truck back to the dealer for the umpteenth time, I must say this is probably the fifth time that I have been back to the dealer with the same issues.
Every time it’s we changed a modulator we reprogram the computer we did this we did that, last time they actually said that I was a quart low on transmission fluid like that’s my problem, did you ever try and check the transmission fluid on these trucks there’s no dipstick, are you kidding me. it’s a dealer thing you have to go to the dealer to have it checked. WTF… and if they reprogram the computer that you say drivefor a while it’s going to need to relearn it could get a little sketchy for a while until it learns. do this do that, can’t find anything wrong, can’t duplicate the problem, I’m tired of the BS. Personally I think it’s a torque converter issue. Also all that hard banging every time this happens it’s got to be causing damage to my rear end, universal joints, drive shaft, and the transfer case. something else is going to fail due to this transmission. I now currently have about 52,000 miles on my vehicle been dealing with this since it had a hundred miles on it. I have been very nice to the folks at the dealership thinking they know what they’re doing. all I’m getting is BS. I want something done either a new transmission or torque converter replaced. Tired of adjustments in little tweaks. Very frustrated Chevy Silverado owner….

Itll accelerate to 39 miles per hour then the trans slips immediately after that it makes the weird noise.

My husband took his 2017 GMC Denali in to local dealer GEORGE CARR GMC to have the shudder repaired and was told the transmission fluid needed to changed and flushed to address the shudder. After $576.97 the changed the fluid and flushed but failed to change the filter. After speaking back with the dealer we were told changing the filter was not part of “The BULLETIN” So the transmission fluid no longer travels through a filter, hmmmmm. You can have a none defect for two years, never notify your customers with a notice of such, wait until their warranty is up and call it a BULLETIN vs A RECALL or defect.
We initially thought we needed tires, purchased $1600 set of tires. Continued to have the issue took the truck back to the place the tires were purchased thinking we had bad tires only to then have HIM pull the data and give us the information on this shudder issue.
It would be the equivalent of going in for a heart catch, getting the balloon the doctor knowing you need a stent but deciding well we will see if flushing the arteries works rather than placing the stent. You can come back and pay for another operation should you need a stent. We will be happy to place the stent but you can pay for that rather than putting it in while he’s in there.
Who the hell changes in oil and NOT change a filter?
I spoke to Michelle today at GM in Resolutions. Well Michelle informed me after asking to speak to her supervisor that she was “the end of the line” with this resolution. REALLY MICHELLE. So you refused to allow me to speak to your superior, you basically stated my case is closed and if I wanted a filter go pay for it. Well I’m here to tell you I’m not stopping with you Michelle. This company knowingly withheld information about a defect for two years. Two years when my vehicle would have been under warranty but you failed. You never notified your customers of this potential problem and to contact your dealer if you experienced this problem. We did. And they failed us to.

    1. Same problem with my 2017 Camaro RS. At 30,000 miles there was a hesitation then shuddering at 1200-1500 RPM at all speeds. Dealer did a triple transmission flush, they said the more you drive it, the better it will get. I took it back 800 miles later with the same problems. They kept it 3 days, saying they called TAC and have an open case with GM on my vehicle but are waiting to hear from TAC for the next step in fixing the transmission. I’m frustrated and disappointed with GM. In the mean time, I picked up my car from the dealership, still waiting on a resolution. It’s been 11 days as of 12/30/19.

I paid $257.00 for the fluid exchange and sent an email to Mary Barra ([email protected]). I received a call from an adviser and told them the issue and they said they would get back with me. Well, they did and they said like a recording your vehicle is out of warranty so we are not going to reimburse you but we can give you a voucher for $100.00 for future service. I told them don’t bother as I am getting rid of the truck and I will never purchase another one of their vehicles. No wonder why they are ranked below Dodge now.

It seems to be more than one type transmission, my 2011 Silverado with a 6 cylinder had transmission failure at 90,000 miles it was replaced by Chevrolet under warranty, now 84,000 miles later it’s going out again. I suppose that’s as long as Chevrolet expects a transmission to last because now I am being told I will have to buy the next transmission, they are high priced for something that will only last 80-90,000 miles

  39. Did you have the transmission flushed with the synthetic transmission fluid I believe it’s 17 quarts to flush it and then they fill it back up with the synthetic. My transmission was acting horribly doing all kinds of things since I’ve had the transmission flush it’s 90% better I still have a problem between first and second gear but all the other issues have gone away almost to the point of being tolerable. I’m sorry to hear that they rebuilt your transmission I’m still having a problem but nothing like it was before. try to flush and see if that helps some people are having wonderful results with it. I’ve got 57,000 miles on my truck and I think that problem just went on too long for the flush to absolutely work perfect for me I have a feeling that my torque converter is glazed having some sort of problem since I drove it that way for so long. I had a friend transmission completely go out he flushed it filled with synthetic and now it works nicely he’s a mechanic he was skeptical tried it presto. When I’m driving on the highway or in the country I don’t have any problems just in City driving stop and go between 1st and 2nd gear transmission seems to get lost sometimes especially when you’re just cruising along at a slow rate of speed between first and second gear and you hit the gas it will bang into gear.

    1. Hey Joe M.,
I had a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT that had the “Chevy Shake” and when I took the truck in to the dealership they said they would have a technician check the vehicle because I was also getting my oil changed at the same time. Well when I picked up my vehicle, I was told that the technician did not find anything wrong. But yet when I would drive down the highway my cup in the cup holder would shake so bad I was afraid of having a full cup because it would go everywhere. So I took it back again for the recommended time for an oil change and told them again about the “shake” that was still there. They had my truck ALL DAY and when I went to pick it up I made sure this time to pay attention to the mileage because I don’t believe they test drove it the first time. Well come to find out, they didn’t test drive it this time and I knew for sure. I had to ask the guy if the technician found anything and he then told me no and that maybe we needed new tires or maybe the tires need to be balanced. I then asked him, then why wasn’t that done if you guys had it all day? He said that it wasn’t scheduled for that. (confused face)!?!?!? I told him that I specifically told them that it was shaking and wanted it fixed. How more clear is that? I really started to believe that it was because I was a woman and they felt like I didn’t know what I was talking about. I would drive the damn truck everyday back and forth to work which was 30 miles away. I knew what it felt like and I knew that it was normal. Anyways, I traded it in for a 2016 Silverado 1500 and have had issues with a humming or growling noise that goes in and out when I reach 50 mph. My 2016 has 69,000 miles. I’m about to take it in to get looked at. The problem just started, but I have other issue with this truck as well. The upper control arm bushings and probably the lower ones as well need to be replaced. You would think as much money as we paid for these trucks it would be more reliable. Not to mention the crappy dealership repair guys I took it to. I was totally treated differently because I am a woman.

My Chevy that I traded in was 13 years old and going strong but needed a truck with more payload to pull my horse trailer. Did I take a financial hit, yup. However on the bright side I’m glad it is gone and I don’t have to deal with 15 years of tranny issues. Sorry for your issues. Just my advice. It looks like this is a chronic problem with some of the 2019 Allisons they used and they cannot figure out why they are having the problems like you are detailing. 59. Brought my truck to Alexander Buick & GMC Simi Valley because of a bad vibration in my NEW 2018 GMC Sierra transmission. My truck was not scheduled for any service it only had 47,000 miles. I had the engine oil changed, air cleaner checked and replaced as required since day one. Service department said the bumper to bumper had expired at 36,000 miles and that I would have to pay $640.00 for a complete transmission flush with a new upgraded Mobile 1 synthetic trans oil that would fix the problem. How is this my problem! This is the trans fluid that came from GM? They did say if there’s a component (a physical part) causing the problem that my drive terrain warranty (6 years, 60,000 miles) would cover the costs. I asked ” isn’t fluid a part of the transmission, answer “NO, fluids are not covered under the drive terrain warranty it’s preventative maintenance” So if I’m not scheduled for a service I would have to pay the costs. Then I asked if I just kept driving the truck and didn’t service the transmission what if it fails? Answer, “good chance the drive terrain warranty would not be covered because I refused to fix the problem”. After paying $524.00, I did a little research and found this problem was known by GM in 2015-2019 GMC trucks with 8 speed transmissions and a bulletin was published recommending Dealers to replace trans oil with new Mobile 1 synthetic oil in new vehicles on the lot. “BUYER BEWARE” I checked the box below saying “I agree that GM or the dealership can publish my response” LOL we’ll see if that happens.

  76. If your truck was still under warranty they would probably tell you they cannot duplicate the problem same old BS I get every time.
I bring my truck in Keep telling me they can’t duplicate the problem. I have the Silverado High Country 1500 taxes interest and cost of vehicle out the door pushed close to $70,000. That’s about what I paid for my first home. I have 62,000 miles on my truck. the day my warranty is over if I bring it in, guarantee they will find a problem with trans probably to the tune of about $4,000. They just don’t want to fix it now because it’s on them, they know it’s my torque converter. I did get them to flush the transmission with Mobil 1 synthetic. made a world of difference with everything except for the hard banging when your car is downshifting when slowing down for a speed hump or a stop sign that you don’t completely stop at. As you go to accelerate the transmission gets lost from second to First gear smashes into gear sometimes with such ferocity that it feels like you’ve just been rear ended. I have had this problem since the day I drove off the lot new. Every time I bring my truck in for an oil change or some sort of service I also bring up the transmission issue try and get them to agree that the torque converter is losing pressure why else would it not stay in gear. they told me that it’s completely normal for it to act that way and that it’s waiting for you to make up your mind what you want it to do. That is a bunch of B.S. it either stays in second gear or first gear but desn’t get lost in the middle like it’s in neutral. Last time I was in for service I needed fuel injectors complete set of them 8 they would not look at the transmission unless I repaired the fuel injectors to me that’s extortion. Got GM to pay for half of the cost of the fuel injectors figuring now I’ll get them to look into the transmission. Only thing that happened is I lost money replacing the injectors and say we cannot duplicate problem is all I hear from them about the transmission. The reason why the injectors needed to be replaced was because I had a cold engine misfire after the car started up ran for a few seconds it ran fine. Now if I were to get rid of this vehicle I’m out the money that I laid out for the fuel injectors because I would not have replaced them. I would have just gotten rid of this thing I am finished with GM this is my third new vehicle from them never had any problems with my previous two but this transmission is a piece of crap. 8 speed. I get a little bit of the shuttering problem but it’s only because the truck is in 4-cylinder mode. If I put the transmission shifter into manual set it for no more than sixth gear it no longer will shift into 4-cylinder mode the shutter goes away. I don’t get the shutter like everybody else does it’s very subtle but I can feel it, unlike others who say their truck shakes so violently that their drinks spill over.

  79. I tow a 4000 pound trailer with my GMC Sierra 1500. I was coming down a grade in manual mode using the gears to hold me back. I was in 4th gear at 2500 rpm. I shifted to 3 and BANG. Next thing I know I am free wheeling down the the hill. I shift to N and back into D with another BANG. This time it was in first gear and will not upshift. I was 12 miles from my Campground, so I limped in at 30mph in 1st gear, 3500 rpm. I am stuck hear about 30 miles from nearest GM dealer. Will have to get this POS towed, and am expecting it will take a new transmission. I have been a GM guy all my life. I am done with GM. My problem is I don’t like F 150s.

  81. Everybody would be satisfied but they have no interest in fixing the problem. Why would they look how many trucks they keep selling with the same 8 speed tranny. There are people on here that have 2015’s all the way to 2019’s and they are having the same issues. Four plus years with the same problem tells me GM has no desire to fix it. I have owned enough cars to tell you every manufacturer has issues but it is how it’s handled is the difference. Was a diehard GM fan including my daily driver and my race cars but not so sure GM will ever be for me in the daily driver category again.

It looks like my options are limited without going into bankruptcy. I talked to the service manager where we leased the truck and he had no solution to offer.

    1. Dave,

Not sure what state your in, But start researching the lemon law in your state. Keep very detailed records from the dealership and make sure they have it written on the documents that it states customer brought it in due to improper shifting, shudder etc. Make sure it includes they did not find a problem. That way you have proof of the amount of times you brought it in. This will also cover you if anything happens after the warranty if over.

My truck has been at the dealer since last Friday, they drove it and said they felt the tranny shift hard, then popped the hood, called me and asked if I could bring in the OE air intake, so I did, the took my cold air intake out and reinstalled the OE intake and said that was the issue. Ok here is my comment, I JUST installed the cold air intake 3 days prior to taking it into the dealership, I have driven the truck for a year with the OE intake and the tranny issue was evident then!!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!!

Power flushed transmission and refilled with the recommended atf from Mobil. Drive home was perfect. Let’s hope it stays that way. Copeland Chevrolet in Brockton MA has been second to none so far!!

  90. Paid $40,000 for a 2019 Chevy Silverado. It’s junk!!! Transmission jumps, head lights are dim, electrical makes crazy noises even after the truck is turned off, AC isn’t cold, vehicle grinds, has recall after recall and even when they fix it they end up messing something else up. And the list goes in and on!!! The dealership Walker Chevrolet basically dumped it on me. Brakes heated up when I took kids to Bluestone, called dealership and he said do you feel safe driving it? I said not really. Floor board gets really hot on drivers side. Gas millage is terrible. Why would they put a 6 cylinder in a 5000 lb truck? Dealership said to save gas it costs more to pull it. I had a 2006 Chevy Silverado and you could take it anywhere nothing could hurt that truck. Worked at Toyota for 15 yrs building transmissions and they stood behind their vehicles. And going by what I’ve read Chevy isn’t.

Great truck awesome power it does have the HD towing package with the extra transmission cooler. But we did not start having a issue till we got 100,000 plus miles on it. And we have towed a lot of boats as we own a boat dealership. Every once in a while it would clunck mainly going in reverse. Now have 160,000 miles
And is starting to get the shutter and a code for trans problem.
The transmission was taking on when ever they had a recall.

I just purchased a 2014 GMC Sierra 4.3 L with 80000 miles and am having issues with the transmission as well hard shift during acceleration and deceleration high temperatures and a vibration. I am completely at a loss as of what to do paying over $30,000 for a vehicle that could have a transmission that fails. Very frustrating.

  96. Try and completely flush the transmission fluid put in mobile one Synthetic should help quite a bit. As far as your vibration goes are you sure it’s not because it’s going into 4-cylinder mode set your transmission to manual put it in 5th speed or 6th it shouldn’t go into 4 cylinder mode see if that stops the vibrating if it does that’s where your issue is. Also have read that after people have had their transmission flushed the vibration went away.

Last night, drove into garage, stopped – placed into P – got out and went inside house truck still running. Heard a BANG and came back out – wife WIDE EYED and gasping!!! WTF?? Truck slam shifted while sitting in P and hit the front of the garage!!!

Decided to buy a new 2019 GMC Sierra and had nothing but problems with the transmission, paid over $75K for a pick up and been very disappointed!!
Took the truck back to the dealership with 500km because the “smart transmission “ was learning my driving patterns , was shifting hard between 1-2, and a camel kick from R-1. The dealership hooked up the computer and reset it.
Had to tow the truck back to the dealership because the back tires locked on me !! Almost went through the windshield!! They told me that they had to replace the transmission module.
I have 50K on the truck and just finished dropping it off again because the transmission shifts so hard between R- 1 that I spill my coffee.
If anyone experienced the same problem, please let me know and share your story!

Going thru the same exact thing right now with my 2019 silverado rst, but my driver side brakes engage slightly when they want mostly around corners so I go to the vet it gas and it does nothing but big my engine down . The kicker is that the dealership says that can’t work on it cause they don’t know what the problem is cause there are no lights on , and they tell me to drive it until something breaks so I’m waiting for a wreck so I can sue or they fix it when a light turns on don’t know what else to do

  106. I had a 2012 Denali whose transmission went out at 46,000 miles. It cost me $1200 dollars to repair it. I later traded it in for a 2018 HD Denali. At 44,000 miles it went out in an intersection, and I towed it to the dealer. I was told that it was NOT covered under warranty. I questioned that the transmission would not move. The dealer ended up repairing it and asked me to pay the $250 dollar deductible. The service rep said a battery was bad and that causes bad signals to the sensors, so I changed the battery for $250–yet almost a month later the transmission went out again. After shutting the car off and on multiple times it finally slipped into gear and I drove it to the dealer where it was repaired again. It drives smoothly now.
Earlier, this same 2018 Denali–with few miles on it–had idiot lights that said it had coolant problems. I took it in, and the dealer topped the radiator fluid off, and claimed that it was an oversight from the manufacture. The warning on the dash board continued for the next two years. I continued to complain to the dealer about it and he said it just needed to be warmed up? I would then clear the bar off my dashboard.
At 43,000 miles i heard noises, and took the car into the dealer, where they tightened the leaf springs. I was then informed that I had a bad radiator, that it would cost $1400 dollars to repair. The Service department denied knowing of a problem, and told me to pick the truck up. I said I wouldn’t drive a truck without radiator fluid in it due to the risk of warping the heads. I called GMC national consumer complaints, and for the next month worked with them to get a repair. It was finally done under warranty, because the truck had been in and discussed a few times for that radiator issue. There must have been some poor quality control at the factory.
At 33,000 miles the steering wheel delaminated. They said they would cover it, but after 9 months and it a refusal to repair it the mechanic said it was due to abuse, and said that it should have been okayed by GM before ever being approved. I asked the mechanic, and service rep if that was my responsibility 9 month prior? I don’t think so.

  107. I have had nothing but problems with the last 3 trucks I have purchased.

First truck was a new 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500, I had the truck for a few months and the electrical kept going out on the truck, The dash would disappear while driving and the entire dash would get hot to the touch. The dealer agreed it was a known issue and bought back the truck in full. I had it less than 6 months.

At the same time I returned the truck to the dealer I decided to upgrade to a new 2016 2500hd Silverado with the z71 package. I started having shifting issues around 7,000 miles, I brought it to the dealer 3 times and was repeatedly told it was not a problem, That its just a normal clunking and slipping and it will go away. I contacted my Lawyer who is extremely knowledgeable about the lemon law in North Carolina. He told me to keep brining the truck in and keep very detailed information on what I brought it in for and what they claimed to have found. He told me I needed to bring it in a minimum of 6 times before I could file any lawsuit paperwork on the truck. My husband was so sick of talking to them, That on the final visit (# 6 ) he told me you go pick up the truck because I can’t handle it. When I arrive to get it the last visit they were not going to give me any paperwork on the reason for me brining it in or what they found wrong. When I asked the tech to give me the require paperwork documenting my visit he asked me why I needed it. I flat out told him I have been speaking to my lawyer who informed me I needed 6 documented visits in order to fill my lawsuit under the lemon law. He proceeded to tell me to hold on for a second, When he returned he said they would keep the truck a couple more days to go over it again, Less than a day later they called to inform us they needed to replace 4th gear in the transmission because it was bad and that we could pick up our truck in a couple days after repairs were made. When I picked up our truck the mechanic told me he was sorry for the pain we had to deal with and that he knew it was an issue and chevy had actually recalled every engine up to the one before ours and he had to follow protocol. He said he had another truck (same make, model, year as ours ) in the shop with 5400 miles that had the same issue as ours and now he knew how to handle these issues going forward. The total for the repairs were just over $16,000 all of which were covered by warranty. I still have this truck and have had zero issues since then.

When my husband needed a bigger truck for work, He decided to avoid gasoline and bought a new 2019 Chevy 3500hd Ltz Diesel. Within the first month we needed to do an oil change and had added def 3 times in the spam of 6 weeks. We brought it into the dealer to see if this is normal or if this is something we should be concerned with. The mechanic said maybe it wasn’t topped off at time of purchase and not to worry about it. This of course was a HUGE RED FLAG given our past experiences with our last 2 trucks. We bought this truck in November of 2018 and to date have had to replace the fuel filter 4 times this truck has less than 40,000 miles on it. This truck is also having shifting issues, It started in October of 2020, We were coming to a stop light and the truck shuddered into gear so hard both my husband and I said here we go again. It only happened that one time so we thought nothing of it. Well last week it was cold so we used the remote start on the truck and it wouldn’t start which we thought to be odd. So my husband goes out and starts it manually and proceeds to leave after it warms up, The second he pulls out of the driveway I get an alert that the engine and transmission need to be serviced the same time his check engine light comes on in his truck. So he turned around comes home and parks his truck until we bring it into the dealer. We schedule the appointment and are told it would be $149 for a diagnostic fee, I said why would I have to pay for a diagnostic when it’s a warning on my engine and tranny which our both covered under warranty? I also never paid a diagnostic fee with my 2016 for the 6 times I brought it in. He said if its covered we won’t pay the fee. The dealer calls to tell us that he found nothing wrong with the truck, That it needs a fuel filters. WHAT? We just replaced the fuel filter on the 27th of October, He said that the fuel filter needs replacing and that is what’s causing the truck to shift hard. I of course know he’s full of sh@t, He is just trying to get money out of us for the filter, the diagnostic fee, Which is going to be around $ 300+. I also feel they are trying to claim this needs to be done so they can void any warranty issues if we refuse to do this service. We will continue to bring the truck in the 6 visits required for our lawyer and start the same process we did for our 2016.

People ask why I continue to purchase Chevy’s, The answer is simple we are die hard chevy fans and always have been. However, After doing this the last couple years and continue engine and tranny issues we will never by another chevy again.

My transmission started shifting really hard from second gear to third gear. It would just bang and shake the whole truck. So I bring to the dealership that I bought it from brand new in 2015. They tell me the transmission is shot. I ask them so is it covered under warranty? They tell no, because I’m over the 5 year/ 100,000 mile warranty. I have only 76,000 miles on it and I’m over the 5 years by 5 months. That is just not right. You pay big money for these trucks and they aren’t going to stand behind their product. That is not right. I’m a little upset with them. I talking to customer service and they said they will help me with some assistance for having it fixed. The person said, they going to try and get $1,900.00 towards the repairs what nothing when it cost me over $4,700.00 to have a new refurbished one put in from GM with a 3year/100,000 warranty. I not real happy with GM Right now. They are going to let me know in a couple of days what they are rein bursting me for. If it isn’t the full amount I’m going further. This is not right.

    1. These GM transmissions seem to be total crap. The problem is almost universal with these trucks since 2015. GM has known of these problems for a long time but continued with the eight speed despite the fact that this transmission is weak and unreliable. The quick fix was to change out the transmission fluid rather than build a new , reliable transmission. GM should redo the transmissions or stop selling trucks. There are so many pissed off customers that they would have to be absolutely stupid to not recognize the huge problem.

I have to pay total 170$ for everything to be done after I’ve spent 25k on the truck a couple years ago. Chevy trans has been garbage since the 80s. Crazy to think 30yrs down the road we still have the same 4l60 in these trucks that can pull 10k lbs. come on Chevy, do better. My truck could blow up right now & I’d buy another Chevy so you have faithful customers but pick up on those transmissions.
