Four GM Vehicles Named As Most American-Made Cars

Annually, Cars.com produces its American Made Index, which tracks the most American-made cars from their components to final assembly. This year, General Motors took four spots on the list.
That figure is actually up from two vehicles that made the list in 2018. Last year, only the Chevrolet Volt and Chevrolet Corvette were named as two of the 15 most American-made cars. This year, the Volt is no longer, but the automaker expanded its placings. For 2019, the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Corvette, and Chevrolet Camaro each took a spot on the list.
The full list reads as follows, from the vehicle most homegrown in the U.S. to the least:
- Jeep Cherokee
- Honda Odyssey
- Honda Ridgeline
- Honda Passport
- Chevrolet Corvette
- Acura MDX
- Honda Pilot
- Chevrolet Colorado
- GMC Canyon
- Acura RDX
- Chevrolet Camaro
- Toyota Avalon
- Ford F-150
- Honda Accord
- Toyota Tundra
Honda dominates the list with seven vehicles exerting their American roots. Jeep has held onto the top spot for three years in a row, per past data. As for the newcomers to the list, the Camaro, Colorado, and Canyon, each earned a spot thanks to a higher percentage of American-sourced parts. The Corvette also features more components made in the U.S. this time around, which caused its ranking to jump from tenth to fifth.
The American Made Index calculates parts content, final assembly, origin country for engines and transmissions, and the number of American workers the parent automaker employs at the factory level. The study looks at 100 nameplates, but discounts any models that sell fewer than 2,500 units. Heavy-duty trucks are also not included in the rankings.
We’ll likely see the list fluctuate again as automakers shift production and supplier sources to meet requirements for the pending USMCA trade deal. The deal, which would replace NAFTA if signed into law, requires a higher amount of North American content to qualify for the free-trade zone. It may also move some production to the U.S.

Is inheard that Honda being a Japanese company have 7 vehicles that are made using more US made parts/labor, that GM and FORD that are true American Companies, these two should be ashamed of this.
In a equal world they should be but they all produce vehicles under very different circumstances.
#1 Not all Honda products are under UAW contracts.
#2 Honda has like many other Asian companies have new smaller more efficient plants.
#3 Many of these plants came with long term tax breaks.
#4 It is cheaper to build them here vs Japan.
#5 when many of these plants were built the Asian companies only hired young workers and to this point have seen minimum retirements and min hits on their health care benefits keeping cost down.
#6 many of of these plants are in the south where wages are lower but you also have to consider the cost of living is much cheaper too.
Ford and GM are stuck in many older UAW plants in the North with higher cost of living is prevalent… The work force is also loaded with many older employees and the legacy of decades of retirements they are still accounting for.
nice list of reasons why honda is a better business than gm.
regarding #3, gm pays ZERO federal income tax.
Do you realize that Honda is building these cars in the US due to competitive advantages? They are not building these vehicles in the US simply to provide jobs to the US population. While I agree that its good there are jobs being created I certainly wouldn’t hold Honda in some kind of high regard.
Might also note the profits are not staying here.
Maybe not, but the WAGES are, and are spent locally.
gm’s competitive advantage is all those plants in mexico.
Is there more than one GM plant in Mexico?
si. mucho factories.

Sean the GMC Canyon should be over the Colorado on the list. They have six more American made fasteners. LOL!
Must be the lockwashers.
Ok that makes it 12 if you count those.
I’ve said this many times in the past and will say it again here. Follow the money! This is the one thing this “study” doesn’t speak of or bring up (at least that I can ever find). As scott3 said above: “the profits are not staying here.” Enough said!
someone should remind trump of this fact the next time he huffs and puffs and throws a bigly tantrum.
These “made in america” surveys that dump on the D3 are all misleading. When you include R&D studio and corporate headquarters in the calculation of US benefit–which is the rational approach–the D3 dominate. Look at the Kogod Auto Index.
