Competitive Sales Comparison
Chevrolet Cruze sales continued to decline in the first quarter of 2019, with the compact model range posting one of the largest declines in sales volume in its segment.
The lackluster Chevrolet Cruze sales performance puts it in fifth place in its competitive set in terms of U.S. sales volume during the quarter, behind the Toyota Corolla in first, Honda Civic in second, Nissan Sentra in third, and Hyundai Elantra in fourth. Notably, the top three Japanese contenders accounted for more than 50 percent of the segment’s overall sales volume.

The GM Authority Take
We attribute the Chevrolet Cruze sales slump to the discontinuation of the model for the North American market, as both the GM Lordstown plant and the GM Ramos Arizpe plant have ended Cruze production in March, something we believe was caused by the following factors:
- An ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks.
- Major product issues, including the fact that the second-generation Cruze was not a particularly standout product in an extremely competitive segment. Specifically, there wasn’t much of a reason to buy the Cruze over similar offerings from well-established and highly-attractive rivals from Japan, Korea, and Germany.
- Various other product-related shortcomings such as not offering all-wheel-drive or a high-performance variant, and also being the only model in its competitive set that cannot be equipped with an accessory-level roof rack. As such, despite being a new product with several features unique to its segment, the Cruze is simply not as competitive as its direct rivals.
- Lack of marketing support for the Cruze on a national and retail level.
Despite its discontinuation in North America, the Cruze will live on in other markets, including China and South America.

The cruse is the best small car GM has had . with alittle upgrades could be contender. Honda and toyota are selling tons of cars and nxt gen kids are loving cars again. they should have kept a plant going selling and promoting them. They are going to lose future customers
GenZers, retired people on a fixed income, and rental car companies all buy large numbers of compact cars.
The idiots that are called GM management always plumb new depths of ineptitude. They go make an announcement just before Thanksgiving about killing their best compact car and shutting down the Lordstown plant. Then they have the temerity of complaining about how the press covered the Lordstown shutdown, what a bunch of absolute morons.
Im surprised the Cruze holds a number 5 sales position even though the car line has been stupidly discontinued. It goes all downhill from here though. GM expects people to look at the new Trailblazer, I think they will check out the new Mazda 3 and Honda Civic.
They have a knack for bumbling almost everything lately. I’m not sure if there’s every been a car company that has pretty much dared their loyal customer to leave. Between this, the lackluster trucks and lame Cadillac’s it’s almost become entertainment. I fully expect their full size SUV rollout to be a total disappointment, too.

The Mazda3, Sentra, Forte, Jetta & Golfs are Made in Mexico.
Toyota was going to build Corollas in a new plant in Mexico, but decided to build more Tacomas there instead.
Honda is moving small car(Fit) production out of Mexico. Needs the space to build more HR-Vs
Stop making cars in north America, continue making cars in China, when the market for cars returns, gm has a direct pipeline of cars for the willing customer, and wont have to tool up any of their shuttered N.A. facilities.
Job offshoring complete
I was stunned by the discontinuation of the Cruz. My 2016 Cruze Lt (lease) has been a trouble-free car. It provides a comfortable environment in which to drive, It is quiet, handling and ride are good, not exceptional. And the gas mileage with the 1.4 liter-turbo… simply marvelous. I can get 46-48mpg driving at 55. Recently I got 44mpg driving home at 65-70mph. I have to say I feel it is a matter of not having good marketing for this car. The one negative I would focus on is the lack of driving aids (adaptive cruise, etc.) except for the highest level trim.
