While most purveyors of pickup trucks tend to take the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach with their tailgates, GMC decided to completely re-engineer this simple, yet critical pickup truck feature. The result is the GMC Sierra MultiPro Tailgate, which is offered on 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 models. The tailgate is ever-flexible, featuring six different configurations to increase utility and convenience. We recently took the new tailgate our for a spin on a 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 1500, and captured the experience on video.
Our short video demonstrates the expanded functionality of the GMC Sierra MultiPro Tailgate.
The first thing you’ll notice is a two-tiered set of buttons mounted in a black panel at the top of the tailgate. These buttons control which section of the tailgate opens, while the two round bits at either side are the left and right camera lenses.
Hit the top button, and the top-most portion of the tailgate folds down. This is called the Inner Gate Work Surface configuration, and it provides a convenient and flat surface at chest height, while also creating a second-tier loading area.
Fold that section back up and hit the bottom button, and the tailgate falls down like a traditional tailgate. However, hit that top button again, and the middle section folds down, creating the Foldable Inner Gate configuration that’s great for easy loading and unloading of the pickup’s box.
On top of the foldable middle section is a third, slightly hidden rectangular button. When depressed, a third section folds down, revealing the Full-Width Step with the inner gate down. This makes it even easier to get into and out of the box, and can hold a maximum of 375 pounds.
The GMC Sierra MultiPro tailgate also offers a Primary Load Stop, with the primary gate opened and the full-width step folded up. This provides additional space in the bed for extra-long items, while preventing cargo from sliding out.
Finally, there’s an Inner Gate Load Stop configuration to prevent second-tier cargo from sliding out.
The GMC Sierra MultiPro Tailgate is available on the half-ton 2019 Sierra SLT, 2019 Sierra AT4, and 2019 Sierra Denali. As recent spy shots suggest, it looks like GM will also add it to the Chevrolet Silverado in the near future.
