New Lawsuit Alleges GM Fit C7 Corvette Grand Sport, Z06 With Faulty Wheels

General Motors has been served a new lawsuit that could soon become a national class-action lawsuit over bad C7 Corvette Grand Sport and Z06 wheels.
CarComplaints.com published the lawsuit information on Wednesday, which details the troubles Corvette Grand Sport and Z06 owners have with the aluminum-alloy wheels. Owners have complained to the NHTSA that the wheels bend, warp, and even crack. A cracked wheel poses a safety risk as it could puncture a tire while driving. To be clear, there is no recall for the Corvette for the complaint, but the NHTSA has documented the issue thus far.
One owner said he leased a 2018 Corvette model and took the vehicle to a shop to have them coated, but the shop took video upon his arrival that two wheels were bent already. The dealership the owner leased the car from said his driving style was the likely cause and both wheels cost $7,500 to replace. Eventually, GM paid the owner $1,200 as part of the out-of-pocket cost. However, the lawsuit argues this is a breach of the car’s 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.
The proposed class-action lawsuit argues GM knew about the wheel defects beforehand or else customers would not have purchased the sports car.
Although multiple customers have filed complaints with the NHTSA, one owner characterized the problem after just 1,000 miles on his new C7 Corvette Grand Sport. The owner said vibration suddenly occurred while driving around 55 mph and a dealership said all four wheels were bent and needed replacing. GM Customer Care told the owner this issue was not covered under warranty.
The faulty wheel lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California with Capstone Law named the firm to represent the plaintiff.

I just bought a new GS 19′. I was “encouraged” to buy the Wheel and Tire Warranty…At C
OST! so that I would be a happy customer if I bent a wheel (cause they all bend) or blew a tire. Ive had 911’s, Focus RS, Z cars, Lotus’s and have never bent a wheel. I am still happy with the GS. Best bang for the buck anywhere. So far no bends or cracks. We’ll see how we do hitting curbing at the Glen. May have to buy Forgelines…
I’m not giving up this easy….
Forget about the junk G M junk wheels! Get aftermarket there is an outfit out of Florida that has exact look-alike I have been told.
Yes, all knock-offs are made in China.
Check out Forgeline forged wheels.
I got a set to replace my junk OEM wheels on my grand sport from custom wheels for less. Very, very happy with them.
Also much lighter then the cheap chevy cast wheels, makes a difference. The car feels even better.
All of us who bought a Grand Sport or Z056should file with Kehoe Law Firm, P.C. Investigating Consumer Claims on Behalf of Vehicle Owners and Lessees.
Class Action Lawsuit Filed On Behalf of All Persons in the United States Who Purchased or Leased Any Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (2015-Present) or Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Vehicle (2017-Present) – Kehoe Law Firm, P.C. Investigating Consumer Claims on Behalf of Vehicle Owners and Lessees
Kehoe Law Firm, P.C. is making consumers aware that a class action lawsuit was filed on March 31, 2020 against General Motors LLC in United States District Court, Northern District of California, on behalf of all persons in the United States who purchased or leased any Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (2015 to present) or Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport (2017 to present) vehicle designed, manufactured, marketed, distributed, sold, warranted, and/or serviced by General Motors LLC (“GM”).
According to the class action complaint:
The . . . [v]ehicles are equipped with wheels (a.k.a., rims) that are prone to bending and cracking, necessitating costly repairs and replacements. In addition, cracked rims can cause puncture the tires, causing air leaks and tire blowouts (collectively, the “Rim Defect.”)
On information and belief, the Rim Defect occurs because Chevrolet in designing and/or manufacturing these specific [v]ehicles, which are sub-models of the Corvette line, used rims that are of a cheaper cast material, rather than forged. They also used less material than necessary in order to try to save unsprung weight (i.e., weight that is not borne by the cars’ suspension). As a result, the rims are not strong enough and crack under normal driving conditions. [Emphasis added.]
Additionally, the complaint alleges:
Despite access to aggravate internal data, GM has actively concealed the existence of the defect, telling customers in online forums that the wheels are not defective and that the cracked wheels are caused by potholes.
GM sells the Class Vehicles with a 3-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. However, when class members bring their vehicles to GM’s authorized dealerships requesting coverage for the Rim Defect, GM is systematically denying coverage. As a result, Class Members are paying thousands of dollars out-of-pocket to repair and replace the wheels.
The Rim Defect is material because it poses a serious safety concern. Cracked rims can cause the tire to fail and explode while driving, leading to a sudden loss of control at speed and a potential collision.
The Rim Defect is also a material fact because consumers incur significant and unexpected repair costs. GM’s failure to disclose material facts regarding the Rim Defect at the time of purchase is material because no reasonable consumer expects to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to repair or replace defective rims.
Had GM disclosed the Rim Defect, Plaintiff and Class Members would not have purchased the Class Vehicles, would have paid less for them. [Emphasis added.]
U.S. purchasers or lessees of any Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (2015-Present) or Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport vehicle (2017-Present) designed, manufactured, marketed, distributed, sold, warranted, and/or serviced by General Motors LLC are encouraged to contact Kehoe Law Firm, P.C. to discuss potential legal claims.
We should all get together and file our own class action lawsuit. Just need a good attorney to represent us. Shouldn’t be too hard.
I’ll find a lawyer and we can all file our own class action lawsuit. I’m a victim too. Who’s with me?
Do you have 1M set aside for legal fees to fight this? If not move on…
I hate driving down the road knowing if I hit a bump or pothole on the highway my rim could crack again.
Typical GM behavior. Engineer an incredible car but go cheap on at least one item to ensure that the buyers are left with a bitter ownership experience.
Here we have the bean counters demanding cheap rims on an $80K car without doing any calculations on how it will affect GM’s profits after Corvette owners tire of replacing expensive rims and move on to a competitor’s product.
I want in on the suit. First vette 1967. School, career. Then, ‘92, 96, 04, 10, 16 (zo6), and now a 19 zo6.,I’ve driven v’s from key west to nw Canada. All over the country. Until the zo6 I’d never had a faulty rim. Two were driven on 4 miles of gravel road. Slowly!!
Both right sides of my zo6 bent. I’m the inventor of the nicotine patch and I’m mad.
How is a nicotine patch relevant to this discussion? If you’re a big shot, go buy yourself some HRE wheels and be done with it.
BTW, you’re not.
Dr. Murray E. Jarvik, the UCLA pharmacologist who showed that nicotine was the addictive factor in tobacco and invented the nicotine patch for smokers trying to quit, died Thursday at his home in Santa Monica.May 14, 2008
Which Law Firm is handling this suit. I want in. Driving a time bomb!
These guys here. This is their commercial.
3rd rear rim cracked just noticed today. SMH!! Good thing I have wheel and tire warranty. Let’s see if they want to cover a 3rd wheel replacement.
update – 2 new cracked wheels (both in rear) with a bent front. This pushes my totals to 5 cracked wheels and 4 bent wheels on my 2017 Grand Sport. My suspension setting is on “Touring”, my driving for this year has been limited due to the China-virus – only putting roughly 1.5K miles since January. I avoid known road repairs & construction. I longer trust these wheels and cannot justify spending >$4k dollars on forged wheels. Its time to let this wonderful driver go….
I have warranty extended through a plan the dealership offered for 5 years or 75k miles and they said I already met my cap. Even though I never was told at time of sale there was a cap. The finance manager told me he didn’t know and I asked how doesn’t he know what he is selling so now I’m waiting for GM to call me back. Some BS ! My 4th cracked rim..
Welcome, I just gave up and changed the rims after my 6th cracked wheel.
It’s a bummer
I to did the same..
GM just don’t care
GM blames driver error for most of lack of their better judgement just to save a buck.
That is exactly right. I went through the same issues did the proper check in for warranty and they denied it. Typical auto maker response of abrogating their responsibility for the products they produce and choices they make to save a buck by sourcing inferior parts.
I just took my rims in AGAIN. ALL 4 HAVE MORE THAN 1 CRACK. It has been a none stop battle. Replacement after replacement. This is not ok. How to I file in the class action lawsuit
I have read about so many of these wheels cracking yet no one has said what type of wheels are they. I was told that this is not happening to Chrome wheels, is this true. Granted I do not have many miles/Kilometers on my 19 GS with chrome wheels! and have not a problem yet if and when I do I will get aftermarket! I will not waste my time with GM Canada all they have are people that answer the phones and will not get anywhere with them, been playing games with them for 50 years!
