Drivers of vehicle prototypes are often very careful to ensure they don’t give away much when testing new vehicles—especially performance cars. However, this driver of a mid-engine C8 Corvette prototype likely had enough of the highway traffic.
In a video from YouTuber Ace1260, the cameraman caught up to a mid-engine C8 Corvette prototype on the highway. With the window rolled down right alongside the Corvette, the driver gives it some go-juice to pass a vehicle. It’s the first time we’ve heard the sports car at semi wide-open throttle, and boy, does it sound good.
Corvettes often have a distinct sound, despite cars like the Camaro sharing a V8 engine. There’s no denying there’s a burbling V8 engine mounted in the middle of this prototype, and from the sound of it, we imagine this is the entry-level powertrain. It’s rumored the current 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine will get a makeover and pump out around 500 horsepower for the mid-engine C8 Corvette and wear the LT2 designation. In the future, we’ll likely see DOHC V8 powerplants make their way to the car, turbocharged and naturally aspirated.
The brief acceleration clip doesn’t give away much other than the sound, though, and there’s no way this is a video of the sports car with the pedal to the floor. The rather instant gear drop from the automatic transmission is also pleasant. So far, it appears there will not be a manual transmission offered with the C8-generation Corvette, which would be a first for the sports car in its decades-long history.
We’ll finally see Chevy’s worst-kept secret on July 18, when the brand debuts the sports car in California. Until then, sit back and click play above to have a listen to the car.
