After announcing a preliminary plan to launch the Chevrolet Bolt EV in South America in late 2018, General Motors has officially announced that the small electric car will launch in the region during the fourth quarter of 2019. Chevrolet’s first fully-electric vehicle will begin its foray into the region in October in Brazil, and its expected to launch in Argentina and Colombia before the end of the year.
In Brazil, South America’s largest automotive market, the Chevrolet Bolt EV will cost R$ 175 thousand ($43,500 USD) and will be offered exclusively in the range-topping Premier trim level. During the next few weeks, Chevrolet’s dealer network in Brazil will start accepting first orders from customers interested in the vehicle.
“The EV Bolt revolutionized the world by being the first 100% electric car to combine price and range similar to that of combustion-engined car,” said Hermann Mahnke, GM Mercosul Marketing Director, in a statement translated by GM Authority from Portuguese. “In Brazil, the Bolt EV symbolizes the beginning of the electrification era. It is the first big step towards a more sustainable, secure and connected horizon, aligned with the General Motors vision of zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion,” he added.
Along with announcing the Chevrolet Bolt EV for South America, GM argues that the road to electric vehicle democratization involves several important elements such as infrastructure, vehicle costs and public policies in each country. In this regard, the Mahnke stated that the company has held talks with authorities in South America to manage incentives for new energy vehicles.
The Chevrolet Bolt EV features the higher range in its price range, eclipsing the range of vehicles in higher segments. It delivers 383 kilometers (238 miles) or range on a full charge, by U.S. EPA standards. The small EV’s powertrain is capable of generating a maximum power of 200 horsepower and a maximum torque of 266 pound-feet, which is instantaneously available.
GM will share more details on its strategy to launch the Chevrolet Bolt EV for Brazil, including the exact date that deliveries will commence. Similarly, information on the availability of the Bolt EV in Argentina and Colombia is also expected to be announced at a later date.
As announced by GM last year during the 2018 São Paulo International Motor Show, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is one of the launch vehicles planned by the Bow Tie brand for 2019 in South America.

A shame GM left Europe. This car was already a seller (no one was delivered due to the sell of Opel to PSA). The Cruze was also a seller. I hope GM returns to Europe. GM could sell in Europe particularly the hybrid and electric Chevrolet products and the Cadillac brand, already for sale, but for example with 2 dealerships in Spain, (I think is the same case for Germany, Switzerland, France, the UK and maybe a couple of countries more) and no publicity, so 95% of the european population is not aware of the existence o Cadillac in Europe. I drive an Opel Ampera (Chevrolet Volt) and is one of the best cars I ever owed.
