General Motors already shared all the details on the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 and now it’s dropped all the official information on the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 as well.
The biggest changes with regard to the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado have happened in the powertrain department. GM has expanded the availability of the L87 6.2-liter V8 engine to the Custom Trail Boss, LT Trail Boss and RST trims, whereas before it was only offered on the Silverado LTZ and High Country.
Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss trucks with the 6.2-liter engine will come standard with the Z71 off-road package and four-wheel drive. Silverado RST trucks can also only be ordered with the 6.2-liter engine if they are equipped with four-wheel drive.
Additionally, the L3B 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is now available on the Silverado Custom trim level, whereas before customers had to make the jump to the more expensive Silverado LT to have the more efficient powertrain option.
GM has also expanded availability for the 10-speed automatic transmission. The automatic, which is shared with Ford, will now be standard on LT Trail Boss models with the L84 5.3-liter V8 engine and available on High Country models with the 5.3-liter V8. Just like before, the 10-speed automatic transmission is standard in any truck with the 6.2-liter engine.
GM says the 10-speed transmission provides “closer gear ratios and an overall larger ratio spread,” that allow for greater peak efficiency and smarter and smoother shifts.
“In today’s truck market, customers continually demand more features, more technology and more capability,” said GM full-size truck chief engineer, Tim Herrick. “For 2020, we are delivering more in each of these areas. As a result, the Silverado now offers customers the most towing capability of any light-duty pickup and the most affordable light-duty truck with more than 400 horsepower.”
GM has also added the new camera-based adaptive cruise control system to the Silverado for 2020, which also appears on the 2020 GMC Sierra. With a camera mounted in the rearview mirror, the system is able to scan the road ahead and use software to maintain a safe following distance. Previous adaptive cruise systems from GM used a radar-based system.

It’s good they are listening to people who are begging for the 6.2 on more trim levels
I mean it’s just give an inch take a mile, but it would be awesome if they did a reg cab short bed rwd RST with the 6.2
RST with 6.2 is taking class leading towing with 13400lbs too.
And a double cab 6.2L will be the cheapest truck with over 400hp now at under $44k
Murica! Truck Yeahh! Thank you GM
Now they just have to upgrade the interior, expand availability of the regular cab, improve MPG across the board somehow and clean up the ride quality most editors are complaining about. Still it’s good they are finally pairing the 5.3 with the 10 speed as it should have been from the start.
How about also making the 3.0L Duramax available in the LT Trailboss, and custom, and custom Trailboss.
Any word on when the 3 liter duramax will be available?
Was supposed to be this Fall but it’s delayed until 2020 due to EPA certifications. After the VW scandal and the Dodge EcoDiesel issues the EPA is likely being extra careful
Hmm. GM has been doing some sensible things for the 2020 model year. Now all they need to do is redesign the interior to coincide with a possible 2021/2022 mid cycle refresh.
These comments just go to show you. People will never be satisfied!!! Give them the moon they ask for Mars!!!
I posted months ago the 6.2 was coming to the lower priced trucks. as far as MPG go my 18 5.3 gets 18 MPG normal every day driving and 26 MPG on trips to camp which is 200 miles trip on 2 lane back country roads. the 19 should do better with cutting put more cylinders than just 4 like my 18.
The adaptive cruise is a nice touch. Wish they had that for 2019.
I’m happy they are finally listening. Chevy truck owners want the brand to lead and not follow, this is a good step toward that! Interior quality? I think that will come eventually, for now, just offer another color or two or maybe Gideon across the board from Custom up. This truck was close, little things like this can make it spot on!
That’s great that it will be offered, but with GM constraints there will still be limited availability
Woohoo! This addresses one of my biggest long standing criticisms of the Silverado. Now please GM, offer a larger fuel tank. A truck that can tow 13400 lbs should be able to carry more than 24 gal of fuel.
I also hope they offer the 6.2 on lower trims or the Sierra as well. A Sierra Elevation with the 6.2 would be perfect.
The interior on mid level and low level trucks is better than what Ford offers by a mile. It’s the top trim that’s hardly better than the mid trim.
The sane whiners that say truck cost to much and would get a base/mid level pretend like they would get a King Ranch interior in a XL.
The RST I’m looking at has a leather (ok vinyl pleather) dash. Reviewers never bothered to mention this. The 2015 F-150 Sport that I spent a lot of time in was a sea of hard plastic on the dash. I don’t get how any reviewer thinks the 2019 GM interior is bad when the F-150’s is just so much worse in the high volume trims.
So in theory what would be the quote unquote lowest priced truck (2wd & 4wd) with a 6.2? Starting with next years model.
There is a possibility that most new major updates are already tested and waiting for the 2021 f150 release. Kinda a wind out of your sails move against Ford. They now have best in class towing and Ford should be done with chassis design if they want to release in 2021. Next will be the efficiency updates closer to the Ford release and the new interior and facelif for the Ford release. Theve banked on the refresh so far, these are obviou moves, becons some kind of overall strategy.
WAY TO GO GM!!!!!! First the LT1 Camaro and now this!!! I’m glad you guys are listening. There may be some hope for GM yet! I still say the 5.3L is under used in the GM lineup as several other vehicles could utilize this wonderful engine. (Camaro & Colorado in the current GM lineup) as well as a few new vehicles such as a performance Alpha platform sedan (2.7L Turbo 5.3L and 6.2L) an Alpha platform performance crossover and a midsize performance crossover (Trailblazer SS). tweak the interiors on most of your lineup and Chevroelt would be on point.
This is great news! Suddenly the 1500 is back in the pool of choices for my next truck. When the 6.2 was previously only available in a dolled up $60K+ rolling massage chair I had a “that’s fine, I’ll look elsewhere” attitude.
The new build & price 2020 is up showing the diesel but no 6.2L availability at anything below LTZ as usually what gives?
I have 2017 LTZ 2 wheel drive with 6.2L and love it. Just found out the 6.2 is only offered in 4x4s now!! What that about? Sucks for me
