Chevrolet is falling behind both Dodge and Ford in the pony car sales race, but the automaker is not ready to settle for third in this hotly contested segment.
The automaker has added a new trim to the Camaro lineup designed to pull customers away from the Mustang and Challenger. Introducing the 2020 Camaro LT1.
Chevrolet says the 2020 Camaro LT1 “combines the content and design” of the Camaro 1LT and the Camaro SS, offering customers a less expensive way to get themselves into a Camaro with the 455-horsepower 6.2-liter LT1 V8. It will be available with a six-speed manual transmission or 10-speed automatic and will be offered in both coupe and convertible body styles.

2020 Camaro LT1
Prices for the Camaro LT1 will start at $34,995 including destination. For comparison’s sake, the 2019 Ford Mustang GT starts at $36,350 including destination, while the Challenger R/T starts at $35,790 including destination.
“The new Camaro LT1 is a great choice for those seeking a pure V8 performance experience,”said Chevy’s director of passenger car marketing, Steve Majoros. “And at less than $35,000, it will be one of the most affordable V-8 performers on the market.”
It seems as though any equipment available on the 2020 Camaro LT will be available to throw on the 2020 Camaro LT1. Some of the new optional equipment available on the LT for 2020 includes a rear spoiler, red or orange brake calipers, 20-inch alloy wheels, Recaro seats, dark tinted taillamps and a sueded steering wheel and shift knob.

2020 Camaro SS Redesign
The addition of the 2020 Camaro LT1 to the automaker’s lineup was announced today alongside changes to the 2020 Camaro SS. The updated 2019 Camaro SS was panned by media and consumers, leading Chevrolet to fast-track a redesign for 2020.

Cheaper V-8 model and revised styling. I like it.
Only passionate chevy guy would like this
“Only passionate chevy guy would like this”
Maybe, only passionate ford guys wouldn’t, lol.
well i wont waste my $$ on a mustang now!!! THANKS GM!!!!
I love both as well and have driven the Bullitt and 2 SS recently. The Bullitt had that typewriter tick that Ford claims as normal. Salesman was hoping I did not notice it. So I spoke to the service department and they claim it is a real problem. My buddy at work just had his engine replaced in his California Special due to typewriter tick and scored cylinder walls in his Mustang. Ford get problems fixed.
After being given a Ford; (but still being 2 tall 4 the mustang cabin; i conceded 2 liking Ford! until this yr; i was a genuine chevrolet Fan) Now i’m a liker of both Ford & chevrolet! [i’m sorry Dodge/mopar fan’s; (in my opinion: dodge got the idea 4 the bubble fenders from the Voltswagon Beetle)! {4 ALL the Folks who like high horse power & stiff chassi “you pay 4 what you want” [the eco type= budget built & extreme type= U ALREADY KNOW]}!!!!!!!
I would Love an After hours vehicle, would Love a four door Camaro, here in Oz! Something to pick up a few of the boys and go for a drink or take ths Family away for the weekend. It has to have a bit of boot space!
Did we mention the 2019 SIlverado?
I bet we see that price dip to around $30k with incentives later this year.
Are those “incentives” Worth staying w/GM?
15% incentive discount… unlikely.
Maybe some NOS still on the lot in 2021, and with a dealer discount added.
My question is, will dealers order them for stock. With a few necessary options, this is still, easily, a near $40,000 Camaro.
NOS? A bolt-on procharger works @ all RPM’S: it’s just about how the engine is built 2 get the HP U WANT!! A bolt-on adder is far cheaper than helping make the folks who make the NOS bottles RICH!!!!
‘NOS’… NEW OLD STOCK. A new car still unsold by the next year’s model run.
Applied to the context of the sentence it doesn’t make sense that it was Nitrous.
You are correct but I would be fine with the LT1 with cloth, manual and sunroof and the sensors for the blind spot and parking monitoring-maybe HUD. Right now you have to get leather for the SS.
Agree…Joe
Six-Speed _ Sunroof _ Sounds/Bozeman _ Dual-Mode Exhaust _ 1LE.
Together the collision and lane change features, bumps the price way up due to required pkg or equipment
GM just added more incentives for the 1500 pickup trucks in May. This website just posted them a couple of days ago. The sales are down for the 2019 pickup even though it’s new. Also extra incentives for the 2018 model year as well.
Chevy should do 2 sub-ZL1 V8 models. A “low-output” 6.2 around 400 hp, the new 6.6 L.O. around 425 hp and over 500lb of twist, the high-output 6.2 around 480 HP and H.O. 6.6 with over 500 hp. The s/c 6.2 can remain the top-dog will over 700hp…
Oh and please make a sedan counterpart of the Camaro please….
It would totally be worth the extra few millions it would cost to cert that engine combo for the 5 or 6 extra cars it would sell……
How about a sub sub sub sub series with a 305 and 4bbl?
If anything, I would add twin turbo option to the 6 banger.
The 6.6 is a heavy iron-block truck engine. It doesn’t belong in a Camaro.
Yeah but the L83 5.3l does, IMHO. Hmmm, RS L83 with 1LE pacage for $2K less than an LT1 1LE?? Sign me up.
Subtracting hp doesn’t make the car magically cheaper…..
You guys might not been around when the 6.0 “truck” motor was available in G8, Caprice while 6.0 H.O. was in GTO, Vette, TBSS. The 6.6 is LT1 based which why guys want the historic LS 5.3 in the Camaro?, if you going V8 make it the best, it’s 20 CID bigger than the 6.2, not thousands of pounds heavier like you guys make it to be. FCA have no problem giving 2 versions of the 6.4 in HD truck and LX, why the Camaro different?.
If a 5.3 is a must return the Chevy Nova based on CT4 as a sedan/hatch to replace Cruze from 1.6 T to 5.3 v8. So you have Nova 5.3 ( or Nova 327 for nostalgia) and leave the 6.0+ to the Camaro, Vettes, top trucks and (hopeful) a full-sized sedan.
@ Guestt – It wasn’t a “truck motor”. It was an LS2 aluminum block with LS3 heads. Non-performance cam and lower compression was what kept the horsepower under 400 and avoided it the “LS” engine designation.
LET ME STOP THE ARGUMENTS ABOUT THE TRUCK ENGINES. THE 2500 AND 3500 TRUCKS HAVE CAST IRON BLOCKS, NOT ALUMINUM. THE CARS AND THE PUSSY 1500 TRUCKS HAD OR HAVE ALUMINUM BLOCKS. SO, STOP FIGHTING OVER WHICH IS A TRUCK ENGINE.
Angry Since May2019
What’s the outburst?. Ok what’s the dry weights of the 6.0 LS2 / LS3, the LT1 and the new 6.6 and why wouldn’t it work?.
There are truck engines vs non. Its not just a block metallurgy thing. The intake manifolds are different heights and profiles. The exhaust manifolds are different lengths and profiles. The cams are different spec. The compression is different. It’s all based on the RPM band the engine needs to make power and work in for its intended role. The 06 GTO and 06 Trailblazer SS both had GM LS2 engines. The TBSS had a truck intake manifold, and different exhaust manifold profiles. One was indeed, a “truck engine”.
No.
I kinda like your train of thought on this but tweaked ever so slightly. Currently Chevrolet has in it’s arsenal of engines a 310hp/348tq 2.7L and a 355hp/383tq 5.3L. Taking the 2.7L turbo-4 and giving it a slightly more aggressive AFR tune and of course some slightly different hardware, the 2.7L could easily be bumped up to matched the new Mustang’s 330hp/350tq. Take the 5.3L, throw in a set of L99 heads and cam to keep the AFM functional, exhaust manifolds from the LS7 Z/28, an LS3 style manifold and have yourself a 415hp/420tq 5.3L Camaro R/S that can still get 30mpg in ECO mode but still have a V8 under the hood. At that point GM could offer the RS Camaro without Brembo brakes, an 8-speed Auto or 6-speed manual sport suspension (no magnaride), 3LT body, unique RS interior, and a few other things and that would be a better lineup for the Camaro. GM could offer performance packages like it did in the past with the Cobalt SS along with a 1LE packages and other things. Yeah the SS will still be around as will the ZL1 and hopefully a Z/28 will join back in soon but this is kind of where GM needs to be with everything. Even if GM made the Z/28 just a hot version of the Camaro SS 1LE (hot meaning a head and cam package on the LT1 with better exhaust manifolds, a new cold air intake, a freer-flowing exhaust, Z/28 suspension, DCT auto or 6-speed manual, Z/28 wheels, Z/28 aero, Z/28 interior, etc.) and gave the car about 550hp but still streetable i think a lot of people would be happy.
I also agree that Chevrolet needs to have a performance Alpha-chassis sedan that offers different engine setups to fulfill different levels of the market (just like the Camaro). I wouldn’t stop there though. GM needs a street performance SUV (something that brings back the days of the Silverado SS, which was the best performance SUV on the market I dont care who says different), a street performance Colorado, a couple of Street Performance Silverado 1500 models, an off road performance Silverado 1500, an off road performance Silverado 2500 and a true off road SUV like what the full size blazer or Yukon GT used to be even if it’s build on the Colorado platform, just make sure there is a small V8 as an option. The Colorado needs a make over with more of the influence of the Silverado 1500 both inside and out. The current blazer has potential, just offer an SS variant and rename it the equinox. For God’s sake get rid of the Trax, Retire the Impala (rest in peace old boy), get rid of the Traverse (make that the new Trailblazer with an SS package to fight the Durango SRT, Focus all of the hybrid and electric cars to the buick lineup, etc. I could go on and on but that is really the main point.
WRONG! The new Mustang Ecoboost 2.3 (2018 and 2019) is 310hp/350tq. Not 330hp/350tq.
Which is…wait for it…35hp more than GM’s offering. Yeah, 2.3 vs 2.0 and GM’s 2.7 offers what??? GM NEEDS TO COMPETE. Nuf’ said until GM makes it a reality. “Till” then, No comparison, sorry.
They can’t put the 6.6 liter 2020 gas engine in the Camaro because it’s a cast iron block for trucks only. That extra weight in the front end would throw the handling out the window. If you want to stroke the 6.2, Callies makes a crank for the LT1 engine.
The red one above looks sharp. Talking about a sleeper most people would assume a 4 or 6 cylinder camaro.
I don’t know about the rest of the front; I’ll look at it for a while before I can decide if I like it, but the DRLs are awesome. Best ones yet on the Camaro.
Yet you clamor for a sub 6.2 $30k Silverado W/T…..
A turbo 6 belongs in a Buick but not a Camaro. I’d think it’s matter of time before a 7.3 Mustang hit the streets also….
POS phone….., a 6.2 Silverado for under $30k
I’m glad to see Chevy finally doing what it should have done long ago. Now they MUST advertise this new package to generate sales! Hopefully they offer the 1LE handling package as an option without the Recaro seats and other non essentials. I’ve calculated 1LE would cost, based on the 2019 SS configurator, that it would cost $3,665. + $35,990 =’s $39,655. Reasonable $$ for that level of performance.
BTW, what’s the bet that ford drops the price of the GT by $1K or at least offers an incentive of the same?
Ok, I replied when the article said MSRP was $35,990 and now it shows $34, 995? EVEN better! Still want the L83 for $2K less and you’ve hit the jackpot Chevy.
The L83 wouldn’t allow them to offer the car for any less money. It doesn’t cost less to produce, doesn’t weigh less and still requires the same parts like transmission and such. I’m glad they are doing it this way.
Honestly, I down voted you and for this reason. I’ve heard your argument many times before and it’s BS.
Go to the silverado configurator and configure both versions of the same model/package and you will find there is a difference of $2,695 between the 5.3l and the 6.2l. Once AGAIN, do the research as I tell all who reply like you. To give you the same exact info I researched, silverado 1500, 2wd, crew cab. Pick your engine and see for yourself, please. I don’t care what they cost to produce, I’m looking at what they CHARGE for that difference.
That just means they make more profit on the 6.2. The cost to build a 5.3 is about the same. Pay attention to what Mike is saying.
Please present your point with documentation and not speculation. Bottom line is not about “profit” to the end user, it’s about what it cost’s US, the end user. Please pay attention to facts, not speculation. If you have a point, PROVE it, and not just what “Mike” says….FACTS PLEASE and WHERE you get them…… I have them, do YOU?
The L83 uses a cast crank which probably saves money.
The sole reason why I haven’t bought a ZL1 is because of the Recaro seats.
Can you see out of it??
Just enough to beat whatever it is that you’re driving 😉
When will it be available to the public?
Fall 2019.
you can put an order in starting June 13th.
This car is ready for a redesign; one that includes a bigger greenhouse and a more serious interior for the enthusiast driver. The current 6.2 drivetrain in the Camaro is already damn serious and needs no reworking , but if GM did the right styling inside and out including non Mickey Mouse gauges and properly placed A/C vents with a more upscale feel to the interior they just might have a car that buyers would ask the question “ why would I buy an M3 when I can get this at 1/2 price?”.
And at 1/2 price it would easily run with an M3 on the road and at the track.
It already runs with the M4. For 2/3rds the price. I’m a multiple M3 owner, but I prefer driving the SS-1LE to the M4, but prefer the M4’s cabin. That said, I have no issues with the Camaro’s sight lines.
This front end looks better than SS.
Now, we need LT5 in Camaro also
Agreed. The ZL1 needs it to compete with the GT500 and Redeye.
Good Move GM. The LT1 front looks better than the SS. Now what has been left out to make it cheaper? Does it have crap Brakes and suspension? Ditch all the power crap out of it and save 300lbs. Bring back a Stripper model.
Finally. A good looking 6th gen V8 model. I am now truely interested
Two small but important changes to the flailing Camaro lineup. Adding the 10 speed to the 3.6 is also a good move but if your going to the effort of doing that why not go all the way to the base 2.0T?
Probably for the same reason the turbo 1le came after the v6 1le. To test the waters and see if it’s worth putting it in the base model. Granted I’m with you I would probably buy the turbo Camaro with the 10 spd if it offered better performance over the 8 spd.
I just regained faith in Camaro, its about time. A 1LT with a V8 and the looks, and a SS with a good looking front end. Thank the camaro gods for listening to my prayers. The SS front fascia and bowtie placement changes is what I have preached since day one needed to be done. I will not thank Camaro for producing the 19 SS worlds ugliest front fascia and with the bowtie in the worst possible placement.
I agree, but 30 years from now the 19ss will be sought after. Like the odd ball Super Bee Dodge’s.
Still won’t be one in my garage.
This is probably the best automotive news I’ve heard in a long time. I just wish they’d also offer a 5.3L version under this as well. I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these cars!! At this point the only other thing GM needs to do is drop the 2.0L Turbo for the 2.7L Turbo, offer some GMPP upgrades for the 2.0L like some stage kits (just like what GM did for the Cobalt SS), add a few other things and call it a day.
I have been vindicated. Been crying here and other sites that the Camaro needs a lower cost V8 model using the 5.3L V8 with the Camaro RS fascia. GM does one better and unleashes a brutal 6.2L LT1 V8 powered Camaro! *EDITED*
Kudos and congratulations to General Motors. My heartiest salutations to the guys at Chevrolet performance! Well done guys!
GM you need to return your marketing arm to the invincible giant it used to be! Look to your storied and glorious past! Make people want your machines!
Its not a 5.7 its the same 6.2 from the SS.
I think you’re right. Makes me respect GM even more for doing this. Should have known a 5.7L would need a lot of massaging to make 455hp. Going to edit.
amen
