We’ve already told you a lot about the upcoming Buick Encore GX, but all the information we had was for the Chinese market. But today, GM has gone official with the 2020 Buick Encore GX for the United States market. Here’s the skinny.
The 2020 Buick Encore GX will launch in the U.S. in early 2020. It will be positioned between the subcompact Encore, which GM will continue selling in North America for a while, and the compact Envision as a sort of “subcompact plus” premium crossover SUV.
“As we look to the future of Buick, the Encore GX positions us strongly as a consideration for those who want to purchase small or compact SUVs,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick, and GMC.
GM says that the 2020 Buick Encore GX will offer “new standard safety technologies” while its style and functionality “will be just right for many of today’s buyers.”
The new Encore GX will offer a slew of standard safety and driver assistance features, including Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. It will also offer GM’s innovative Rear Camera Mirror, which provides a wider, less obstructed rear view while parking and driving, as well as a High Definition Surround Vision camera system.
The new crossover, which rides on the GM VSS-F platform (or rather, vehicle set), will offer “spirited and efficient performance”, while its cargo space was purposefully designed to be almost 5 cubic feet larger than that of the Encore and about 3 cubic feet smaller than that of the Envision.
Buick will announce further product specifications and pricing information closer to launch, though we already got our hands on the crossover’s dimensions. Like the “regular” Encore, the Encore GX will be assembled by GM Korea and imported into the U.S.

The introduction of the 2020 Buick Encore GX expands Buick’s crossover offerings in the United States to four. Today, almost 90 percent of U.S. Buick sales comes from utility vehicles.

Wow, looks better then in the spy shots.
– Great looks
– Right size/shape/dimensions for the current US marketplace
– Good list of standard safety features (finally!)
This is the first vehicle in awhile that GM has announced that I think will be a smash hit (assuming GM doesn’t screw it up in regards to the pricing, of course).
Alex Luft, thanks for this great article. Very excited to learn more about the new Encore GX!
Do you have any info about the transmission choice yet? I am really hoping they do not use a CVT. And this one (pics above at least) look great. I love that it’s all painted around the wheels and front/rear bumpers. That makes the car look so much more upscale! Do you know if that will be on all or just a higher trim (AKA Avenir)?? I’m really hoping great things on this new Encore GX as I’ll be ready to trade in about 10-13 months.
“I love that it’s all painted around the wheels and front/rear bumpers. That makes the car look so much more upscale!”
So true. Now if they can just offer an interior without black.
Unfortunately, you can bet the body-color cladding will be only on the top trim. It eventually became standard on the Rendezvous, so maybe they’ll wise up.
Ralph, I’m thinking Avenir. What do you think? Either way, it sure makes it look nice.
The vehicle in the photos has the ST trim which is like a sport appearance package. I assume other trims will look like what we saw from the Chinese debut with black plastic cladding.

Nice Job by Buick right here.
GM did trademark Envision GX around the same time as Encore GX. That might be the missing midsize CUV.
They finally added the colored tri shield to the steering wheel.
Good eye! I didn’t notice that and now that you pointed it out, I realize my 2018 has the all chrome (open) logo without color.
This thing should sell like free pootang on shore leave……..
Wish it had a better name though, but then you gotta spend more marketing dough to get the name out there.
On another site, just saw one exterior pic and one interior pic of the Trailblazer (Trax replacement). From what I could tell, the interiors look nearly identical. I hope that’s not the case because Buick needs to certainly be more upscale from the Chevrolet version. Please say it isn’t so! Any interior pics of the Trailblazer and/or more of the Encore GX interior?
Different dashboard shapes, instrument clusters, and screen/vent layout. Also different materials.
That’s what I thought, but the article on leftlanenews shows a different story. From what I could tell, the one inside pic of the Chevy was mostly just a different steering wheel.
Have you seen more pics? May I ask where? Thanks Ryan.
Pulled both sites up at the same time and had the interior pics of both. Toggling back and forth, I can now see a bigger difference. Actually, both are really nice. I’m thinking these two will be huge hits.
On first glance, I can’t find much wrong with it. This actually looks really good.
If Buick wants to be premium, they should put adjustable shocks on it, so you can have a decent ride with just a driver without sloppiness when loaded. That’s a problem with low-curb weight vehicles–400-500 pounds makes a big difference.
Ralph L. I promise I’m not stalking you! haha.
Anyhow, are you old enough to remember the late 80’s and early 90’s? Buick had as standard, Dynaride. It was a very simple, but effective, deflected disc valving system set up in the shocks. It really worked well IMO and was so simple AND was not expensive to replace. Not sure if that is more common now days or if it’s been tossed aside, but I never hear of anything like it today without going to MRC, etc. Also, in the 1992 Buick Skylark GS, they had a standard adjustable system that with 3 buttons on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. That too worked well. Oh the memories!
I had an old Ford Probe that had electronic suspension, worked excellent from soft to performance settings. I wish more cars these days have it.
This is quite nice looking. I think it will do well for Buick
Wonder what will power the encore gx now….. I know for sure something like the XC40 has the 1.5T and 2.0T
Nice South Korean addition to the Buick/GEO division of GM .
Any info available on trim levels/colors?
Looks great! But let’s just pray they don’t put a CVT transmission in it or it’s a no go for me and a majority of knowledgeable people
Just seen the update … will come with a three cylinder turbo charged engine with a nine speed transmission on the top end model or a CVT transmission plus smaller three cylinder turbo charged engine on the lower end models,
LOOKS GOOD ! HOPE IT HAS CD PLAYER WHEN IT HITS THE DEALERS ! US OLD FOLKS ( BUYERS ) LIKE OUR TUNES !
I have been waiting for a part for my 2021 Buick encore since August 20, 2022. What is the hold up? Everyone I met knows how much I love my SUV, or did. I will never purchase another GM product after experiencing how they hang you out to dry with no parts available. I need my car!!!
