Competitive Sales Comparison
Cadillac XT4 sales were healthy during the quarter as inventories grew while awareness and advertising increased. But the XT4 was outsold by the Acura RDX and Lexus NX, as well as the Cadillac’s corporate cousin, the Buick Envision (see Buick Envision sales). The Acura and Lexus sold twice as many units as the XT4, while the Envision outsold the XT4 by roughly 600 units.
Even so, the XT4 outsold the Volvo XC60, Lincoln MKC (see Lincoln MKC sales), Infiniti QX50, as well as the Volvo XC40. Lincoln has overhauled its entry in this space; that model will soon launch the 2020 Lincoln Corsair.

The compact premium crossover segment expanded 25 percent to 56,343 units in Q1 2019.
Below, we display sales numbers for rear-drive-based compact luxury crossovers for informational purposes. Despite being close in size to the Cadillac XT4, Lexus NX, Acura RDX, Buick Envision, Lincoln MKC, and Infiniti QX50 these vehicles have starting prices roughly $5,000-$7,000 higher and therefore are generally purchased by a different subset of customers than those interested in front-drive-based compact crossovers.
For instance, the Buick Envision starts at $34,065 while the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class starts at $40,050, the BMW X3 starts at $42,650, and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio starts at $41,995. As such, FWD-based and RWD-based luxury crossovers are comparable from a size standpoint, but are in different segments in terms of pricing, transactional and demographical standpoint.

The GM Authority Take
In its press release, GM stated that the XT4 was the best-selling vehicle its segment during Q1 2019, but it’s unclear how the automaker arrived at this conclusion, since two other same-segment models – the Acura RDX and Lexus NX – outsold it by a factor of two.
Going forward, we expect XT4 sales volume to increase as the 2019 calendar year progresses, as both availability and awareness improve compared with Q1 2019 and Q4 2018. In addition, XT4 sales should increase globally as other markets – notably South Korea, Russia, and Europe – see their regional launches of the small luxury crossover SUV. For those markets, especially Europe, the XT4 should see the introduction of an all-new turbo-diesel engine.
About The Numbers
- All percent change figures compared to Cadillac XT4 Q1 2018 sales, which were non-existent since the model went on sale in Q4 2018
- In the United States, there were 76 selling days in Q1 2019 and 76 selling days in Q1 2018

7,026 Units for the first quarter isn’t bad.. but it’s doubtful that Cadillac will sell as many vehicles as the vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox which sold 88,500 units during the same period then again, Cadillac doesn’t want to be a volume sales leader and just wants to be competitive given that there’s just one engine option.
The reform early on that is a good number for the segment.
If you follow trends on CUV models they start slow and build. Just look at the Nox numbers early vs now.
Cadillac is not going to sell a ton of these. That is not what this segment is about.
While it is entry level it still a luxury class. The essence of the luxury class is to have something special and not what everyone else has.
I wager Cadillac in due time will make it to second place in segment.
I first saw one in person last November and fell in love with it. Then I saw all the pics from all the car mags and GMA and thought that I one I saw must have last year’s model because the pics looked so different and disappointing. Most of the pics must have been taken from a stupid smart phone camera. This past Sunday I looked at 4 of them in person at a dealership. -The xt4 is not photogenic. The car is actually sick! And with the 20″ wheels it’s ridiculous! The car is bad ass, I want one!
I can’t help but to think that if Cadillac took some of the black plastic off this car that it may sell better due to looking more premium. Or if not that, why not offer a package where the black plastic is painted (or mostly painted)? I do like the look of the XT4, but between the lack of a name along with the sea of bland plastic, I’d have a hard time putting my money down for one. If I were to buy one, it would have to be in black to help hide the plastic.
On the other hand, the MKC (another stupid non-name) was way up and catching up to the XT4, even though it’s about to be replaced. Watch out Cadillac. Once the Lincoln Corsair is out, I’m thinking it will pass the XT4 in sales.
You mean like the black plastic on all the other cars in this segment. They all have it. Its makes people think its more expensive. I agree some could be painted but the black plastic will hold up better to rocks and bugs than paint would.
@Joe:
Yes, just like all the others. But this article isn’t about them and I wasn’t commenting about them. This is Cadillac and I don’t expect Cadillac to look like a turd Toyota Rav4, or a Jeep Compass, or a Kia………
Cadillac is supposed to be premium. They need to make it look that way. Also, that black plastic doesn’t hold up that great over time anyhow. Just look at some older vehicles with it. It begins to chalk (kind of turn grayish/white) and become strangely discolored. Plus, if you wax your car and get the wax on the black it makes it look even worse. I’m not opposed to some in key areas to help with the things you pointed out. But the XT4 has a front end with 1/3 of the front in all black plastic, 1/5 of the side and 1/4 of the rear. Nasty.
Dan what you need to use is a multi surface polish known as Top Coat F11 that can be used on all paint finishes including matte finishes as well as all types of plastic and will not leave a white streaky wax finish. It will protect it with a nice shine and will repeal water and protect it from UV damage too. The beautiful thing about this F11 it can be applied to the whole vehicle with absolutely no worry about white streaks left on any part of the vehicle as if you were to use a traditional wax it would be a total mess. It can be used on all your vehicles, RV’s, Boats and even Lawnmowers and power tools and tool chest. Fantastic product that you will want to use every time on everything you want to keep looking brand new.Also it’s very easy to apply, just spray on and polish off with a clean soft microfibre cloth.
What is the competition for the XT4?
I went by price.
“the Cadillac XT4, Lexus NX, Acura RDX, Buick Envision, Lincoln MKC, and Infiniti QX50 these vehicles have starting prices roughly $5,000-$7,000 higher..” Did I miss read that?
RDX $37,400.
NX -$36,485.
XT4 $34,975.
QX550 $36,550
MKC $33,995
Geez, almost every SUV has a damn X in its name some where!
XT4? RDX, GLA, X1/2, Q3, UX, XC40
XT5? MDX, X3, Q5, RX, GLC, etc. Does Cadillac want the Xt5 to be a GLE, X5 competitor?
XT6? Q7, X5, GLE, RX-L, GX, XC60, Aviator,
@kev,
That will be changing soon as the Lincoln will move back to an actual name! I fully understand that “others” certainly don’t agree with this, but I give Lincoln a huge amount of credit for moving towards standing out in a crowded “X” field!
I seem to remember such things being said when the Continental was announced. I think they still make them. Do they?
@Megeebee:
Yes, they still make the Continental. For how long is up in the air from what I’m reading. But it is alive for now. But that has nothing to do with a name. It’s about being a sedan in an SUV/Crossover world.
I’m with Volvo and Mazda now. The all new (and very nice) S60 is not moving like they would like and the S90 is basically dead man walking! But then maybe that has something to do with the lack of reliability too. Mazda’s best seller is no longer the 3 (car), but the CX5.
The Continental will not see a follow-up model:
http://fordauthority.com/2018/03/lincoln-continental-to-be-discontinued-after-current-generation/
The decision has little to do with sedans being on the decline… as those most impacted by the sedan drop-off are those who were never really strong in the space in the first place (all of GM, all of Ford, all of Infiniti), while the perennial leaders are faring much better. The Conti is going away because demand continues to diminish for the type of product it represents (couch on wheels). It caters to an older subset, and was too little too late.
The Lincoln Corsair has been garnering better reviews than the XT4.
Has it now? Because nobody has driven the Corsair yet. So it has been getting ZERO reviews.
What it has been getting is some initial impressions… and that’s about it.
Kev, you did misread that. Read the entire sentence:
Below, we display sales numbers for rear-drive-based compact luxury crossovers for informational purposes. The bit about higher prices refers to the rear-drive-based compact luxury models, the ones shown in the second table (Mercedes, BMW, Alfa Romeo).
The XT4’s direct class are the vehicles mentioned in the first table (RDX, NX, MKC, etc).
Thanks, I went back and read it.
So, how does Cadillac say it’s the best selling when the RDX, NX is clearing out selling it?
Good question. The short answer is, I don’t know.
The longer answer is that I think they created a fictitious segment of their own that includes the XT4 and the MKC.
Cant understand why they would lie about a fact that can be so easy checked. What does that say about their credibility? if you lie about this what else will you lie about?
I think what happened is that they define the XT4 segment as something that serves them… and only them.
There was a time at a press event that GM labeled the second-gen Traverse as a midsize crossover, which was hilarious. Now comes the Blazer, an actual midsize crossover. And now Chevy changes the traverse label to full size.
It’s the best selling small Cadillac crossover!
“Despite being close in size to the Cadillac XT4, Lexus NX, Acura RDX, Buick Envision, Lincoln MKC, and Infiniti QX50 these vehicles….”
Stuck in a commie car and lost a comma. Would have been easier to follow as “these RWD vehicles.”
Aren’t they smaller on the inside than the FWDs?
“Aren’t they smaller on the inside than the FWDs?”
Nope, same general size. The Alfa is truly tiny, but the Benz and BMW are a bit larger.
I think they’d sell more if the interiors weren’t mostly or all black. The dealers are probably still ordering the high dollar ones, too, despite not having a Platinum.
GM is so pathetic. I recently read an article that GM was complaining that the Silverado had actually not been out sold by the Ram Due to all the incentives FCA was putting on them. Then I read that GM claimed the Escalade was the number one seller in its market but was fiddling with the numbers. Now they claim the XT4 is the best seller in it segment… Well what is it competing with? Is there some phantom vehicle out there we don’t know about? And if you notice the Vehicles on the main list are all near luxury cars I thought the XT4 was supposed to compete with BMW/ MB/ Audi/ LR….etc.
I agree with the above, the new Corsair is going to eat the XT4 ‘s lunch and the cheap black plastic Looks terrible and did I say cheap?
Senior leaders have a GM must seriously be on something because everything they do is universally criticized as not good enough. Yet they always seem to double down with the next underwhelming launch.
They must selling the ones they do in the Midwest and Northeast. I’ve yet to see one in my area. The only one I’ve seen on the road (out of my area) had NY plates. The XT5 is also a complete non-factor in my area. On the other hand, I can’t go three minutes without seeing a Volvo. For Cadillac’s sake I hope the next Escalade is well received, they seem to be losing ground with each new product around here.
In defense of the XT4 I will say it looks much better in person than in photos. I haven’t sat in one, but the XT4’s interior also looks better in real life than in pics.
Cadillac CUV`s and SUV´s strategy is good, but the impersonal names is an a marketing error XT badges sound a little boring………
For example:
XT3= Cadillac Inara
XT4= Cadillac Marai
XT5- Cadillac Cresta
XT6= Cadillac Asphera
XT7= Cadillac Dorade
The Crossover´s and SUV´s have original and imaginativer names……….why Cadillac no?
And the purpose of doing this is what, exactly?
Honestly, What are you accomplishing by doing this?
I actually own a xt4 . Wife loves it and it’s actually bigger than you would think. The only thing I wish it had more power. Hopefully they will have more engine options later.
Have they done anything about the coolant in the trans problem? That needs to be nipped in the bud, no matter the cost. The ATS’s first year reliability problems brought its sales doom. The Germans have enough issues that it could have been a big selling point, like early Lexus.
LOL at trying to sell this in Europe!
Why is it a LOL?
The XT4 would do very well in Europe… if they make a real effort of it … meaning a full-blown dealer network, full-scale advertising, test drives galore, etc. The XT4 is a very capable X3 and GLC rival… and even more so when you compare it to the Q5 and XC60.
And let’s not forget that the XT4 will undercut the Germans in price by a good 5,000 euro. Still laughing?
Yep, still LOL.
Cadillac engines are not suited for the environmental taxes in Europe.
High emissions, low mpg, so high taxes, very high taxes, and import taxes.
Meaning, they will NOT undercut the Germans, but surpass the Germans in price by a very large amount.
And we all know GM will never make any kind of effort. Look at all their last attempts in Europe.
Pathetic.
And ever seen the resale value of a cadillac in Europe?
Nope, never gonna happen.
And the plastic fantastic design of the xt4 is tailored for the chinese and american market.
With German quality products featuring many engine choices, hybrids and electrics coming soon there is no place for cadillac at all.
I’m thinking that GM sees the XT4’s competition as more the BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, Infiniti QX30, Volvo XC40 set. Not the set of vehicles listed, which is why the numbers may not make sense.
Does anyone know the backdoor retail buyers incentives for the XT4 for May delivery. ie. Military, returning customer, cash, finance, etc.
