This 1984 Chevrolet Chevette CS Is For Sale With Just 31,000 Miles

If you have dreamt of owning or getting behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Chevette, today may be your lucky day. We came across this eBay listing featuring a 1984 Chevette CS with just 31,000 miles on the odometer.

For sale in Seymour, Tennessee, the vehicle is in “very good condition [with] original paint and very low miles”, according to the listing. In fact, the seller states that most of the mileage was from being pulled behind a motorhome.

The blue-on-blue coupe has a clear title and (obviously) no existing warranty. The exact mileage is listed at 31,411. Sadly, though, it’s an automatic. The current bids are just over $4,000, but the reserve hasn’t been met yet. In other words, you still have a chance to cop this classic in the next three days.

The interior looks pretty good, but the quality of the photos leaves a lot to be desired. There are no photos of the engine, but this car should have Chevy’s 1.6-liter inline four-banger that puts out… wait for it… 62 horsepower. The automatic also isn’t very helpful in reaching highway speeds, as it takes 16.8 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph.

For those that may not recall or are unfamiliar with the Chevette, it was The General’s first “world car.” The vehicle carried the code name “Project 1865″ and was intended to compete with the Volkswagen Beetle. When marketing the Chevette, Chevrolet released an ad slogan for the that said, “It’ll drive you happy.” If you want to find out if that’s true, feel free to place a bid on this 1984 Chevette CS. The listing for this 1984 Chevrolet Chevette CS can be found on eBay.

  1. No word of a lie – but undeniably one of my favourite GM vehicles of the malaise era.

    1. The paint job is worth more than the car.

While everyone seemed to like the style at the time, if you ever road one with over 50k on the odometer you were taking your life into your own hands. Brake failures common, tin-can construction with no crash absorbing properties built in…True death trap like many of the Japanese cars of the time.

  2. I have to admit that I actually like the Chevette! I was just a young kid at the time it was released and I know it wasn’t the best car. But it just kind of takes me back to a more simple time in life. Plus, the other import brands weren’t much better anyhow.

Kind of got teary eye’d seeing the pics and a radio with volume/tune knobs. haha. I miss those simple times.

    1. Growing up in the 1980’s, my family owned at least 3 Chevettes during that era.

    2. I had a Navy friend who bought one and drove it for years with no issues. A forgotten concept, good cheap transportation cars.

  3. I had an ’81 4dr 4spd. We actually had a Chevette Club with fancy rims and paint jobs with woofers and amps. It’s the first car I actually learned how to work on-had to pull the motor after I cracked the head.

Perpetual punishment for finite crimes is ridiculous.

  7. Small car when I was a kid. My father had one, believe a 1976? Remember one Saturday I was washing it on the front yard lawn. Afterward I tore the grass up because it was wet and the engine was so small and I could not get any traction. He was not happy! Lol ? I was maybe 15 and waiting to turn 16 and get my drivers license. Good memories and I liked the Chevette!

  10. I had a red 1984 Chevette CS. The 1.6l engine had 98 HP. There was also an optional diesel engine. At the time GM was using standard engine blocks in their diesels and the head bolts would pull out due to high compression required in that kind of engine. I put Goodyear Eagle ST tires on mine and tinted the windows. I actually got it up to 80 MPH on flat highway once. It was first new car and I called it my gutless wonder. At about 85,000 mi. the timing belt broke and knocked a hole in the no. 3 piston. At the time I didn’t know enough to fix it and a junkyard engine was more than I owed on it. At 57 now I still have dreams of having that car back.

  11. My first car was a 77 Chevette 4 speed with aftermarket AC. I had rust problems in the floorboards, and went through a couple of engines while i owned it. It ended up with a two tone silver/black (think Eurosport trim that was used on the Celebrity), reupholstered the interior with nicer material, lower profile Goodyear Eagle-GT tires, and a stereo system that cost more than the car. Learned to drive stick with it, and have had manuals ever since.
