Let’s Talk About That Center Screen In The Sixth-Gen Chevy Camaro

Since so many of you wrote in asking why the center screen in the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro is placed at a downward angle, we felt it necessary to dedicate some words to the matter. As with most things GM these days, there appear to be two schools of thought on the situation – those who think it’s a big deal, and those who don’t.
It’s A Big, Huge, Colossal Deal
In the left corner of this debate are those who think the angle of the screen is a big deal, and in many ways, we tend to agree. Why, for the love of everything sweet and holy, would anyone develop a cabin on an all-new, clean-sheet vehicle with a screen that tilts downward?
The best justification behind doing so is that the down-facing angle reduces glare. But GM’s own Cadillac ATS and CTS have screens that are angled upwards, and we have never experienced glare in those units. In fact, yours truly drove an ATS for three years and never experienced glare on the center screen.
The downward angle of the screen is further exacerbated for those who sit higher up in the car, you know – like the ones who are vertically challenged. And that situation could negatively impact interest and sales to the more mainstream (less hardcore) buyers, potentially adding one more reason (besides price) that sixth-gen Camaro sales have been in a major slump.
But, if for some strange reason, the cabin necessitated a screen in that position, then there was probably a way to make the screen’s tilt / angle adjustable. Alas, the production model doesn’t have such a feature.
It Ain’t No Thang
In the right corner of the debacle are those who are completely not phased by the downward angle of the screen in the Chevy Camaro. We’ve heard from these folks and we’re aware that they exist, with some of GM Authority’s own staff members being in this camp.
Others who don’t mind the downward angle have told us that they got used to the positioning within a week or two of buying the car. We’ve experienced this ourselves after driving the Camaro for several days in a row.

Its angeled downward to down the glare from the sun in the convertible l.
That may very well be… however… the Mercedes Benz SL, SLK, SLC, as well as the convertible variants of the C, E and S/CL do not have the screen tilting down at all. The same goes for the Ford Mustang, in either coupe/fastback or convertible variants, or any other BMW convertible.
There must have been a better solution than the one we ended up getting in gen six.
Plain and simple, it was done for the Convertible. No big deal category for me. Al O.
Al O. beat me to it (and he oughta know). I have a Fifty convertible. If the screen was not tilted downward, I’d have issues the 70% of the time that I am driving with the top down. ATS and CTS do not have convertibles, so no need to accommodate.
Everyone ready for Tuesday?
Big day…
Get your popcorn. The show is about to begin.
Did anyone see the front page of the New York Times today?
Lol
There are always people out in left field who don’t have a clue what is going on. Then there is the right approach, doing things properly.
In this case it really is a non-story and seems to be written as click-bait knowing anything Camaro-related will draw interest and passionate responses.
Alex getting all worked up for nothing.
There is a right way to do things and then there are those out in left field. The screen “issue” is a non-issue.
I bought the Mustang instead of the Camaro because of the stupid angle of the Camaro’s screen. I loved everything about the Camaro except for the screen and I could not overcome its angling. It really is a challenge to look at it without changing the position of the entire body. So much for safety and convenience.
I am far from the only one. Camaro sales have been dropping like a rock. Losing sales because of poor design choices is not a “non-issue” but is THE ISSUE.
The “right way” to do things is a way that doesn’t result in a horrific compromise. So many models with convertibles have screens looking the right way… only the Camaro has a screen angled downward. It’s dumb and ridiculous and the designers should be ashamed.
This is the Seinfeld story.
A story about nothing.
I just wished the screen in my truck did not reflect in the rear window of my crew cab at night.
?? good point ??
There is a right way to do things and there is the idiot out in left-field approach.
Choose wisely.
You must be the idiot then.
I just bought a Mustang instead of the Camaro because of the dumb screen. Having to reposition your entire body to look at the screen is not “the right way” you dumb pile of sticks.
My friend went from a Cruize LTZ to a 6th Gen Camaro 1LT and actually liked the Camaro’s screen more. I have no issue with it, especially considering that it’s not sitting next to a keypad or surrounded by ugly buttons like the screen in other performance cars.
I have a 2018 Camaro SS and have noticed the color of the screen graphics are not as brilliant as those in a friends 2018 Silverado. It appears to be the same screen to me although I’ve never measured or checked further. Could the downward angle affect the perceived color?
That doesn’t make sense, because your Info screen, pointed downward, is not subjected to as much light as a large truck with an enormous amount of window space-allowing more light to affect screen clarity.
Compare them at night to gauge your perception of difference.
If anything, your graphics should be clearer, given the “bunker-like” cabin.
Not an issue. Never even noticed the angle. I’ve every Camaro and now have the ZL1
I have a 2017 Camaro RS…I honestly have never noticed the screen being angled down. So obviously it doesn’t bother me…I’ll have to take a closer look next time I’m out for a drive.
I had a 69 SS in the early 80’s. Have not sat in one since until this week. Sat in a 2019 2SS. One of the first things I notices and the screen angle and I said to the salesman, “why would that do that? ” That would drive me nuts.
Didn’t they adjust it on the 2019 model refresh?
You shouldn’t be looking at the screen while driving. All of the information you need to drive is on the heads up display on on the dash right in front of you. Even the navigation speaks well enough you can follow directions without needing to endanger the drivers around you.
6th Gen Camaro owner here – I’ve got a 2018 2SS 1LE with the nav screen tilted downwards. The angle of the screen really doesn’t bother me at all, in fact quite honestly I never even think about it. One difference from the BMW iDrive units I’ve had before is that I actually have to touch the screen, so this necessitates me bracing my hand on the top edge and then touching in the middle of the screen if needed. I don’t need to do that to change radio stations.
All-in-all, I’d recommend the Camaro’s infotainment system.
My 17 SS convertible ‘s screen is not difficult to read. I enjoy the top being down 95% of the time. Have not had difficulty yet with it.
The car seems a little large compared to my 12 miata (prior car) but handling is just as sharp though not as presice yet (my skill is lagging behind the horse power increase). It is a fun learning curve.
I’d like to see the whole dash changed, there is a lot to work with, I’d angle the whole thing rolling down from windshield like the Lamborghini. Also front facia needs help. Why did they change it. My 17 2ss vert is fine.
I have a 2018, I’m a 5’6 female so i don’t notice at all. Just my 2 cents.
ALL screens in ALL cars should be adjustable-tilt up/down, tilt angled towards you, etc.. Why manufacturers continue to fail in this regard is an unknown.
I bought a 2018 Camaro 1LT in June 2018, I didn’t even notice the screen was tilted?
But now that you mention it, it’s true I’ve never experienced this annoying glare I’ve seen in other cars.
What I DID notice was that the screen was nicely integrated in the dashboard and didn’t look like a tablet glued to the dashboard like in BMWs; I also like the fact that with the screen come only 5 buttons.
To me it’s perfect ?♂️
Tilt it down, it’s a driver centric car, I mean, come on! It’s nice someone went so far as to think of that. What’s next on the list? You want reflective shiny stuff to blind the driver? Caddy I’m looking at you.
Ok no. I have a bright yellow 2016 2LT rs with all the trimmings. I would would love a screen with a 1080 or better screen. But 720 works. From what I have been told I can get an update to 1080 for 300$ I’m sure I’ll update but not with gm.
I bought a 2017 2lt RS new and never noticed the tilt til I read a complaint on a FB Camaro page. I’m 5’2″ so not sure if that works to my advantage. I have read comments from other short people that complain about not being able to see over the dashboard well or that the visors are too small. I figure it is just people not knowing how to adjust seats. I went from an Uplander to my RS and love everything about my car.
It helps me. I can rest my wrist on the shift knob for stability while poking around. Besides it gives a great view for everyone in the back seat….lol
I have a 2010 SS and don’t have a screen! Though I wouldn’t trade it for anything, I am envious of the upgrades made post-2010, so I’d take any screen!
I am a Camaro owner and I think GM started making the car “blander” starting with the grill change in ’13. It is so bad that newest models look like Toyota Camry coupes. How sad, they started off with such an awesome car in ’10……
I have a 2018 model and I immediately noticed the screen when I sat in it to test drive. Although I found it odd, it did not deter me from buying it. I am 5’1 and have no issues reading the screen. I love my car!
