Let’s Talk About That Center Screen In The Sixth-Gen Chevy Camaro

Since so many of you wrote in asking why the center screen in the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro is placed at a downward angle, we felt it necessary to dedicate some words to the matter. As with most things GM these days, there appear to be two schools of thought on the situation – those who think it’s a big deal, and those who don’t.

It’s A Big, Huge, Colossal Deal

In the left corner of this debate are those who think the angle of the screen is a big deal, and in many ways, we tend to agree. Why, for the love of everything sweet and holy, would anyone develop a cabin on an all-new, clean-sheet vehicle with a screen that tilts downward?

The best justification behind doing so is that the down-facing angle reduces glare. But GM’s own Cadillac ATS and CTS have screens that are angled upwards, and we have never experienced glare in those units. In fact, yours truly drove an ATS for three years and never experienced glare on the center screen.

The downward angle of the screen is further exacerbated for those who sit higher up in the car, you know – like the ones who are vertically challenged. And that situation could negatively impact interest and sales to the more mainstream (less hardcore) buyers, potentially adding one more reason (besides price) that sixth-gen Camaro sales have been in a major slump.

But, if for some strange reason, the cabin necessitated a screen in that position, then there was probably a way to make the screen’s tilt / angle adjustable. Alas, the production model doesn’t have such a feature.

It Ain’t No Thang

In the right corner of the debacle are those who are completely not phased by the downward angle of the screen in the Chevy Camaro. We’ve heard from these folks and we’re aware that they exist, with some of GM Authority’s own staff members being in this camp.

Others who don’t mind the downward angle have told us that they got used to the positioning within a week or two of buying the car. We’ve experienced this ourselves after driving the Camaro for several days in a row.

  1. Its angeled downward to down the glare from the sun in the convertible l.

    1. That may very well be… however… the Mercedes Benz SL, SLK, SLC, as well as the convertible variants of the C, E and S/CL do not have the screen tilting down at all. The same goes for the Ford Mustang, in either coupe/fastback or convertible variants, or any other BMW convertible.

There must have been a better solution than the one we ended up getting in gen six.

        1. Al O. beat me to it (and he oughta know). I have a Fifty convertible. If the screen was not tilted downward, I’d have issues the 70% of the time that I am driving with the top down. ATS and CTS do not have convertibles, so no need to accommodate.

        1. I bought the Mustang instead of the Camaro because of the stupid angle of the Camaro’s screen. I loved everything about the Camaro except for the screen and I could not overcome its angling. It really is a challenge to look at it without changing the position of the entire body. So much for safety and convenience.

I am far from the only one. Camaro sales have been dropping like a rock. Losing sales because of poor design choices is not a “non-issue” but is THE ISSUE.

The “right way” to do things is a way that doesn’t result in a horrific compromise. So many models with convertibles have screens looking the right way… only the Camaro has a screen angled downward. It’s dumb and ridiculous and the designers should be ashamed.

  3. I have a 2018 Camaro SS and have noticed the color of the screen graphics are not as brilliant as those in a friends 2018 Silverado. It appears to be the same screen to me although I’ve never measured or checked further. Could the downward angle affect the perceived color?

    Reply
    1. That doesn’t make sense, because your Info screen, pointed downward, is not subjected to as much light as a large truck with an enormous amount of window space-allowing more light to affect screen clarity.

Compare them at night to gauge your perception of difference.

If anything, your graphics should be clearer, given the “bunker-like” cabin.

  8. 6th Gen Camaro owner here – I’ve got a 2018 2SS 1LE with the nav screen tilted downwards. The angle of the screen really doesn’t bother me at all, in fact quite honestly I never even think about it. One difference from the BMW iDrive units I’ve had before is that I actually have to touch the screen, so this necessitates me bracing my hand on the top edge and then touching in the middle of the screen if needed. I don’t need to do that to change radio stations.

    All-in-all, I’d recommend the Camaro’s infotainment system.

But now that you mention it, it’s true I’ve never experienced this annoying glare I’ve seen in other cars.
What I DID notice was that the screen was nicely integrated in the dashboard and didn’t look like a tablet glued to the dashboard like in BMWs; I also like the fact that with the screen come only 5 buttons.

I understand people like 3rd row but thats what the traverse, suburbans are for if chevy really wants to improve there sales they need to look into the off road area and more into the racing they already have family based vehichles. They can make the power they just need to do it instead of making hennessey do it. If gm is reading this email me ill show u a sketch of what the blazer should look like. 35. Is the tilt annoying? Yes. Is it an unforgivable mistake? No. But you really have to take all the little things wrong with the design inside and out and add them up and that’s where you get the Camaro’s terrible slumped sales. It’s a sum of all the bad design choices.

  36. 2016 Camaro automatic SS w/ sunroof, dual mode exhaust and variable electronic suspension drives so sweet. Tilted screen is not an issue. It actually restricts glare and screen washout on bright days. It’s way better to read than the screen in our 2016 Impala fully loaded. On bright days the light washes out the Impala screen (for the driver) all the time. The cockpit in the sixth gen Camaro SS is awesome.

Though to be somewhat practical I would have to buy a convertible. My ’85 had a T-top and the rear lift window. With fold down rear seats, that was my super enjoyable everyday car. Now, the convertible is the only way to take advantage of the interior space.
I’ve never been impressed with the dash or the console of this generation.
I’ll buy used and get a 2017, if I can find the right one. With this type of buy one should be very picky.

  88. My issues with the Camaro interior:
    1. Lack of storage. There is literally no place for a smartphone because they put the vents where there is normally a cubbyhole.
    2. Vents. Why are the vents so low? Raise them.
    3. IC bolsters. Why does the IC need those ridiculous flying buttresses on it? They look ridiculous.

    Finally, the big one:
    4. limited exterior visibility. This is in my estimation a large contributor to the demise of the Camaro. A larger greenhouse would also make the exterior look less cartoonish, which could have further improve sales. Competitors like the Mustang and BMW 2 series have far better visiblity which makes them better and safer driver’s cars.

Even track instructors have complained about the Camaro’s limited visibility, saying it makes it harder for students to learn and reduces track safety.

  89. I have a 2019 LT1 convertible. The backup display is so washed out I cannot see the parking lanes. Any thoughts?

Jk. Ask your dealer and see if they have had others who have experienced this problem, or, if they have a “fix” for your problem.

    Good luck!

  91. Chevrolet has no clue. I made a huge mistake buying a 2019 ZL1. I’ve been to the dealer twice and have contacted Chevrolet customer care, no results. The “infotainment system” did not work properly from day one.

    Love it.
    5’8. Not a midget. Not a dude.
Radio doesnt bother me. Though it was one of the first things I noticed.
Definitely didnt buy a camaro for a “backseat.”
    Trunk space is adequate.
And it’s actually a good height off the ground. No scraping random speed bumps or parking blocks.

What bothers me is the as$holes that dont know how to open their car doors gently when parked next to you.

Only actual thing that bothers me is that I cant connect to Android Auto without using a USB cord. The damn car is a hotspot. My phone is Note10….with unlimited data running the latest version of Android. Yet, I need a cable or to change my headunit. Really Chevy…really.
