We’ve already shown you the 2020 Cadillac XT6 in both Premium Luxury and Sport trimmings as it stood on the floor of the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. But now, we have the very first photos of the XT6 driving on the streets of metro Detroit, representing the first time that we have seen Cadillac’s “midsize-plus” luxury crossover “in the wild”.
The Cadillac XT6 seen here is coated in Stellar Black Metallic, which is an extra-charge color. The model is a bit dirty from all the weather in the Metro Detroit area, so it’s not a great representation of the color’s shine. What’s more, this particular XT6 is the Premium Luxury trim level equipped with AWD.
The appearance of the 2020 Cadillac XT6 will set the tone for the design language of all future Cadillac models, with horizontal and vertical elements on the headlights and tail-lights.
The horizontal headlamps are front and center. They offer a standard bi-function LED projector design as standard, with a performance LED headlamp system with a three-element projector array is available as an option. It appears that the model seen here is equipped with the optional system.
Meanwhile, the vertically-emphasized LED signatures – a Cadillac signature – are present and accounted for. The color of the signatures turn from white to amber when the turn signal is enabled, as seen here.
The Premium Luxury trim can be instantly recognized by the bright Galvano finish on the grille, side window moldings and roof rails. The XT6 Premium Lux also wears a unique front fascia.
This model is riding on the base 20-inch units with a 6-split-spoke alloy design with polished/android finish. These are assigned RPO code Q6R.
XT6 Premium Luxury models can be upgraded to of 20-inch, 12-spoke alloy wheels with a fully-polished finish (RPO code SLW).
The rear end features a trim-specific fascia as well as red taillights, which are also specific to the XT6 Premium Luxury trim. All 2020 Cadillac XT6 models feature a through-fascia exhaust outlets.
About Cadillac XT6
The Cadillac XT6 is a three-row premium luxury crossover. The model represents a new addition to the Cadillac model range as part of the brand's crossover expansion strategy. It slots above the the compact Cadillac XT4 and midsize Cadillac XT5 in the Cadillac crossover SUV lineup. Its size classification can be best described as "midsize plus", as it is bigger than midsize but not big enough to be classified as full-size.
The XT6 was announced at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in January 2019 and goes on sale in the spring of the 2019 calendar year as a 2020 model. It is based on the regular-length variant of the GM C1 platform shared with the XT5, but with more rear overhang than the XT5. That extended rear overhang enables it to accommodate a third row. The rest of the vehicle is very similar to the XT5, including its engine, transmission, and cockpit.
The XT5 is produced at the following GM plants globally:
- GM Spring Hill factory in Tennessee or GM Lansing Delta plant operated by GM USA supplying North American markets
- Cadillac China Jinqiao factory operated by Shanghai-GM supplying the Chinese market

Is it me, or do the reports of the XT6 being dead on arrival overblown?
The Chevy Blazer is dead on arrival. Just look at the massive discounts on the 2019 Silverado and at least that has a loyal following.
This might have a chance given it is a Cadillac, not Chevy, and made in the USA. Still looks dated compared to the competition though.
THE REAL BIG NEWS TODAY, AS WRITTEN BY ANOTHER READER…
This is the day! The day the Mueller Report is released proving there was NO Trump-Russia Collusion. It was all a hoax perpetuated by the angry sore loser left-wingers and their fake news media buddies (including a few GMA bloggers). The Mueller Report Trump was right all along and he therefore will not be arrested or impeached.
Time for our President to punish the criminals that lied, schemed, and tried to launch a coup against him. Traitors will face justice.

Literally people come to this site to get away from everyday life and to enjoy their passions of vehicles. Yes people may disagree on this site and voice their opinions but at least for the most time it’s constructive arguments because at the end of the day we all love cars and are just here to enjoy that passion with others.
Literally this is the last place anyone wants to see anything political. I’m a conservative and even I don’t wanna see that crap on a site that I enjoy. Yes you have the freedom of speech and right to but please just do everyone a favor and keep your politics somewhere else. It’s like giving your opinion on immigration in front of everyone at a wedding. There is just some places you don’t say things like that.
Side note the CT5 is a great looking car in my opinion and I am excited to see it in other colors. I’m especially excited for a V-Sport and V model. I have high hopes and I’m pretty sure they will be realized soon.
I know. I used Vampa’s nickname to troll him. Just a joke.
Don’t worry, the CT5 will outclass everything in its segment.
Oops my bad.
Who are you? Why did you do that? lol
Get a life…
I was about to say the same thing on this exterior design, not much of a “Head Turner” !!! If the designers for the upcoming Escalade can’t get it right when it comes to this new Design Language for Cadillac….., I mean come on man, I remember reading an article in Motor Trend Magizine and the Chief Design Engineer of Cadillac stated that the current line up of cars and SUV’s were to Over-The-Top and his strategy was to scale back on the “Over -Dramatic”looks, I’m surely not impressed so far!!!
Looks really good in flesh. I love it.
Is it me or do GM press photos always look of ass compared to out in the wild? I imagine CT5 will look phenomenal out in the open.
I agree they have the worst press pics.
Cadillac looks awesome.
Ultimately what you get is underwhelming for the price. This is an expensive Traverse.
Yes, that’s the enthusiast’s perspective. Meanwhile, non-enthusiasts will buy this thing in droves, and will love it.
PS: there are exponentially more non-enthusiasts than enthusiasts. Go figure.
I beg to differ, “enthusiasts” can you explain that word? Are you speaking of Cadillac enthusiasts or Luxury car buyers? You cant really believe this is going to conquest vehicles like the Q7 or GLS? Heck the new BMW X7 costs alot more but its interior leaves this hag in the dust. The styling, not even in the minor leagues compared to the established luxury 3 rows.
So what does the word “droves” mean? You’re a pseudo-insider so what are the sales expectations for this vehicle? http://gmauthority.com/blog/2019/01/cadillac-xt5-sales-numbers-figures-results-q4-2018 has the XT5 falling to 3rd place in its field (vs a gussied up toyota and honda) and this is simply a 3 row version of that aging platform…
“Pseudo insider”, eh? That’s cute. I’m a professional with solid experience in the auto industry at both the OEM and retail levels, good connections, and an analytical mind… with an education to top all of that off. I’m happy to be of service.
As for the rest of your comment: the state of the automobile market is so tumultuous at the moment that the previously-defined buyer demographics are becoming irrelevant. The lines have become very blurred, so much so that professional marketers, marketing firms, and marketing departments at automakers are having a difficult time placing buyers. Entirely new demos and customer subsets are emerging in order to understand what’s taking place… and consumer behavior patterns/flows are being re-written. There’s some “pseudo-insider” knowledge for you. You are welcome.
I should also set the baseline of segmentation for ya, since you seem confused on the matter. The XT6 exists in a totally different (lower) league than an X7 or GLS. The Q7 is not in the same “segment” as the X7 or GLS, not by a long shot. That would be the upcoming Q9, which Audi is currently in the early stages of planning.
Now then… the XT6 is in the same general segment as the Q7, XC90, RX-L, QX60, and Lincoln Aviator… even the Enclave plays in that space. The XT6 will conquest from all of those existing models, but to think about it that way is to miss the forest for the trees in a very big way. The biggest subset of buyers that will take delivery of the XT6 will be those who are now coming into the segment. This demo is significant, and far greater than the conquest opportunity. That’s Cadillac’s opportunity with the XT6, and it’s the equivalent of money growing on threes.
You asked about enthusiasts, and I’ll gladly answer. These are the people who closely follow the industry… they read the latest material… they know the details, the engines, the performance metrics and specifications… they like cars… they’re “car guys” (and gals)… but they typically have little to no idea what it actually means to sell a single car, and what goes into the decision-making process of a vehicle purchase or what it takes to bring an automobile product to market. This is not at all a knock against these folks. Far from it. But it is a statement or reality.
Moreover, the overwhelming majority of car buyers (especially in the U.S., as Europe enjoys a different mindset) do not think like enthusiasts when shopping for and ultimately buying a vehicle. They could not care any less about 0-60 times or what wheels drive the car or that it doesn’t have the latest engine. It will be with these very people that the XT6 will win. So yes, the XT6 will be a commercial success – whether enthusiasts think it should be, or not.
I can keep going until I’m blue in the face… or until my fingers are falling off.. but until you’ve actually garnered a good deal of experience working in this industry (rather that simply observing it), it will remain difficult to understand why products like the XT6 will succeed, or why the likes of the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, or Lexus RX are wildly successful – despite being universally panned by “enthusiasts”, who have written the products off upon their announcement.
….and the Escalade is an expensive Tahoe. The Continental is an expensive Taurus. The Navigator is an expensive Expedition. The Lexus LX 570 is an expensive Land Cruiser. The XT6 shares positively NO sheetmetal or interior fittings with the Traverse. In fact, they don’t even share a wheelbase. The XT6 is 112.7″ and the Traverse is 120.0″.
You haven’t seen a production XT6 yourself, or driven one. You can’t possibly know enough to make that comment.
Like the Porsche is an expensive VW? Is that what you mean.
Looks boring and nothing special… it may be embraced but not by real luxury car buyers. The Volvo XC90s interior is stunning and this nowhere near that level.
If this pic is the P-Lux model it’s what $75K? No way… a slightly stretched Acadia is all it is. THIS is “American Luxury”, what a bad joke..
PL starts at $53k.
What color is this?
I found a Cadillac press release that says the Sport Model with AWD stars at $ 58K.
I have no idea where C&D got the $75K figure. They don’t site a
source.
Ralph – it’s Stellar Black Metallic.
Looks great on the road. Seems that real world pics of vehicles look better out-n-about than them sitting at the auto show.
This thing is like a classic black tux. Crisp, clean, and good looking.
Looks good inside and out. It’s not as good as the Aviator, by far, but I bet that it’ll be very profitable for Cadillac. That’s what the brand needs as it attempts to expand into new vehicle classes/segments. Once they establish a full line, they should be able to focus on making more luxurious interiors and offering better, more exclusive powertrains. More profits = more improvements.
30k-50k vehicle
I think there will be plenty of XT5 and Escalade owners moving to this.
Looks very good in the wild. While I know this is built on a FWD platform, the Designers have done a great job in balancing the proportions. It looks very good in profile.
Hideous. It looks like something from the mid-late 1990s. The front grille is far too short. There are lines going all over the place. There’s no cohesion to the design. It somehow looks like a station wagon. Other brands do much better in this area. Compared to an Aviator, this is an avocado green refrigerator.
Are you high?
I remember when I could identify every car on the road by make/model even at night. This is just another attempt to overcharge people for buying the brand with a design that looks like everything else on the road. Now I have difficulty identifying one vehicle from another. Manufacturers are all copying each other with no individuality. How can a company that produced great looking concepts such as the Ciel make such boring vehicles. They need to grow a pair and do something original and exciting that says it’s a Cadillac like their cars used to. It like every designer went to the same school.
Not a fan.
I dont really care that this is related to the Traverse or FWD or has the same interior as the XT5.
The interior is pretty damn good! better than most from Lexus or Acura. It could use more small item storage though.
And while is could use another engine choice (the 3.6 gets the job done in the 5, but I feel like this will be a bit under powered), I think everyone is being a bit pessimistic about the FWD system. The system does wonders for the XT5 (and Acadia from what I’ve heard), and people were knocking the XT4 before it was even built, and it turned out to be a great driving car.
I just cant stand the looks of this. It looks very bland IMO.
The Escalade still looks great 5 years later. The new CT6 is the best looking sedan on sale right now. The XT4 looks AMAZING makes the XT5 look very outdated!
I’d take this over the boring germans anyday. Looks like Cadillac is coming back.
Not bad, but the wheels don’t work. Needs a polished set of 22s & perhaps wider tires.
“The Cadillac XT6 seen here is coated in , which is an extra-charge color. ”
This site has a lot of copy errors.
The 3.6 will be fine for everyday use, but 6-7 people on hills and mountains? Maybe if 5 are well under 100 lbs.
Despite best-laid plans, errors sometimes happen. In this case, it’s been corrected.
The 3.6L will be fine wherever. The 1990 Suburban made notably less power and seated more people, and nobody ever complained. A power-dense 3.6 with a 9-speed auto will be a-ok for the overwhelming majority.
I’m fine with the exterior, but I can’t stand the interior. Why the hell does it look so cheap?
Idc what anybody says, that design and front fascia look clean and sharp. Not over done like alot of crossovers are. Elegance comes to mind. Ill be in the market for this segment in a yr or 2, this will definitely be on my short list to test drive.
I am amazed about all the negative comments! I read them here and on other publications online and feels like whole bunch of trolls quite honestly. So I read that Navigator is so much more luxurious than Escalade… And I thought oh my God Cadillac is dying… Then I went to a car show and sat in Navigator. Still trying to figure out what was so luxurious about it? Gimmicky 30 way adjustable seat? I’ll take Escalade with whatever number of adjustments they have. It’s the class leader for a reason. And all the talk about hard plastic on the bottom of the interiors. For a minute I thought Cadillac was the only car maker to do that. Just to find out that everyone else is doing it! Audi q8 has it… And please don’t comment on a car that you have not seen touched or driven!
To Bland, To Overpriced, Not up to being The Standard of the World
“TOO Bland, TOO Overpriced,……”
Fixed it for ya’ Kevin.
Oh, and I disagree.
Incredibly uninspiring.
Looks nice.. yes I would buy one.
