Last week, we showed you live photos of the all-new, 2020 Chevy Silverado HD Custom. Today, we have another gallery of Chevy’s new big boy. This time around, the subject is the 2020 Silverado HD LT with the Z71 package that we shot on the floor of the 2019 Chicago Auto Show.
The LT trim remains precisely in the middle of the 2020 Silverado HD lineup, flanked by the Work Truck and Custom below and by the LTZ and High Country above. This particular unit is the 2500HD coated in the new Shadow Gray Metallic color that’s new to the 2020 Silverado HD.
Trim Level: | Work Truck | Custom | LT | LTZ | High Country |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Equipment Group: | 1WT | 1CX | 1LT | 1LZ | 3LZ |
The exterior design of the Silverado HD LT is differentiated by chrome-trimmed vertical grille elements and a bright grille bar with the flow-through CHEVROLET name. The grille on LT models would typically feature a small Bowtie emblem on the bottom end, but that gets replaced on this vehicle with a Z71 badge. The front bumper is finished in bright chrome. The headlamps are halogen reflectors with halogen Daytime Running Lamps. The front quarter panel wears the Z71 badge, which is in place of the 4×4 badge that’s used on models without the Z71 offroad package.
Silverado HD LT models have different wheels, depending on the configuration: 2500HD models feature 17-inch aluminum wheels, 3500HD single rear wheel (SRW) models wear 18-inch aluminum wheels and 3500HD dual rear wheel (DRW/duallies) feature 17-inch steel wheels. But the model seen here isn’t wearing any of these wheels, because it’s equipped with the Z71 package.
Instead, it’s wearing a set of double five-spoke (10-spoke) 20-inch (50.8 cm) machined aluminum wheels with high gloss Black painted accents (RPO code RQ9) – the same as the Silverado HD Custom photographed previously.
The rear three-quarters view provides a good look at the new BedStep, an integrated step located at front of the rear wheel openings that improves access to the cargo area. The door handles are body-colored on the LT model, the only 2020 Silverado HD model to feature body-color door handles. We also see the optional, dealer-installed round assist steps.
The Z71Â Off-Road and Protection Package, assigned RPO Code PDZ, includes the following content:
- Off-Road suspension with off-road tuned twin tube shocks (Z71)
- Hill Descent Control (JHD)
- Skid plates (transfer case and oil pan) (NZZ)
- Chevytec spray-on bedliner (CGN)
- All-weather Z71 floor liners (AAK, LPO)
- Z71 grille insert (replaces Bowtie emblem)
- Z71 fender badge (replaces “4X4” decal on bed)
Like in the front, the rear bumper is finished in bright chrome. The tailgate features the debossed Chevrolet script, along with a Silverado badge on the driver’s side and an LT badge on the passenger-side. The taillamps are of the incandescent nature, including tail, stop and reverse lights. But the Cargo Area Lighting, located in the pickup bed, is LED-based.
This 2020 Silverado HD LT is equipped with GM’s all-new 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline motor making an SAE-certified 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque mated to GM’s 6L90 6-speed automatic transmission. The celebrated 6.6L V8 L5P turbo-diesel Duramax mated to a 10-speed “Allison” transmission making 445 horses and 910 pound-feet of torque is an extra-cost option.

The problem with this new front end, is this new trend of big lettering across the grill. It is over the top and unappealing in my opinion. The front of the High Country with the traditional Bowtie looks so much better, less busy, and clean. A grill as large as this needs something to break up the middle of the grill. Plus the all black front end of the “Custom” and work truck looks like a vehicle that had a front end collision where the grill and bumper were removed in preparation for repair. Bring back the gray or body color. Large swaths of black plastic is not the answer. Otherwise from hood and fenders back the truck is beautiful.
@MRB
I agree the grill would look much better with a bowtie. I wish they would’ve made the bowtie standard on all models with the lettered grill being an option for those that prefer it.
I actually like the “CHEVROLET” but I wish they would have centered it in the grille and had a more traditional headlight stack without that chunk of body colored “flesh” between the headlights and grille. The bowtie on higher models looks nice but again the headlight stack is odd and the to me the grille inserts look too busy.
But just like on the 1500, get beyond the grille and headlights and it’s a beautiful truck. Like a ugly girl with a hot body!
I love the way they spell CHEVROLET out on the tailgate, however I hate how it looks on the front end. Why does it seem like Chevy is pushing the lettering so much?
I also wish this looked a bit more like the 1500 or even the GMC. RIP Chevy designs. Seems like all the talent goes to GMC and Cadillac now.
Fake hood scoop on the gas trucks. Why not make it functional? Saw a high country with the bowtie grill at a recent show, beautiful truck!
Looks like the Griswolds have a new Family Truckster for their next trip to Walley World.
I am curious to know what the factory tire sizes are now. The GM HDs seem to be plagued with undersized tire options from the factory.
We just purchased a 2020 High Country. 20 inch tires
my next truck will probably be the GMC 2500 (current chevy is a 18 model 1500) the front end doesn’t look near as busy as this but I do like the chrome bumper instead of paint and I hope they decide to offer the 10 speed with the gas engine in the near future. ford is going to do it so GM needs to up the anti to stay competitive
What they need is a bigger grill with more chrome………………..NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
