The starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu increased an average of $562 over 2018 models, according to a pricing analysis performed by GM Authority. Prices for the refreshed 2019 Malibu grew between $410 to $1,400 compared to the 2018 model, but one particular trim saw its base price reduced by $100.
Specifically, the starting price of the base Malibu L grew by $410, that of the Malibu LT grew $1,400, Hybrid is up $300 and Premier is up $800. That said, the Malibu LS saw a $100 decrease to its starting MSRP.
Trim Level | 2019 Chevrolet Malibu | 2018 Chevrolet Malibu | + / – 2019 |
---|---|---|---|
L | $22,965 | $22,555 | +$410 |
LS | $24,095 | $24,195 | $-100 |
RS | $25,095 | N/A | New for 2019 |
LT | $27,495 | $26,095 | +$1400 |
Hybrid | $29,095 | $28,795 | +$300 |
Premier | $32,695 | $31,895 | +$800 |
The $1,400 price increase of the LT model is likely due to the introduction of the new RS trim level that slots below the LT model. The new Malibu RS offers a sporty and more personalized appearance with blacked-out characteristics. It’s priced at $25,095, exactly $1,000 more than the LS model on which it is based. Other factors that may have contributed to the LT’s price increase is the re-arrangement of content in the midsize sedan’s convenience and technology packages.

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan sold in most markets where Chevrolet has a business presence. It is currently Chevrolet's second-largest sedan, in the U.S. and Canada, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and compact Chevrolet Cruze but under the full-size Chevrolet Impala.

For 2019 - the fourth model year of the ninth-gen model - the Malibu received a midcycle enhancement, otherwise known as a facelift or refresh, that consists of revised exterior styling, a new Malibu RS trim level, a CVT transmission for L, LS, LT and RS models, a new infotainment system, a new 8-inch reconfigurable driver information center (DIC), LED headlamps on the Premier model, and various other new features.

The 2019 Malibu LT is a terrible value when judged by it’s very high window sticker of 27495. They added heated seats, remote start and automatic climate control which should have been std from the start but deleted the turn signal indicators in the exterior mirrors, deleted the unlock buttons on the rear doors, still use halogen headlamps and now you can’t even get a leather wheel or shift knob unless you spring for the expensive leather seat package which adds another 1590 to that price. And to top it off we have the lowest powered engine in it’s class with the weak 160 Hp 1.5T, zero advanced safety equipment where you have to pay another 545.00 for the driver confidence package and yet another 550.00 to get Driver’s confidence package II. Add that all up and you over 30K for weak semi loaded up Malibu that many competitors have for thousands less with a more powerful engine, more advanced headlights and greater interior room.
The RS model is another GM enigma. Why make a sporty model and pitch it to the economy car crowd? If anything this car demands the 2.0T engine with 9 speed, driver’s confidence package 1 and availability of far more equipment than it currently has. When pricing an RS I can’t even get it with XM radio, LED headlights, no advanced safety features at all, no engine upgrade over the gutless 1.5T, no interior color choices other than black, no availability of the panoramic moon roof and to get remote start you have to pay 350.00 bucks extra for the kit in order to pay the dealer even more to get the remote fobs. Utterly ridiculous!!!!!! And lets nor forget the hybrid model where if you want LEd tail lamps, remote start or heated seats you are also forced into purchasing 3580.00 worth of option packages to get them!
Sales will continue to shrink badly on this poorly packaged and pitched GM product until they get their act together. But as we all know they just don’t care about cars anymore and it shows big time.
Just don’t see how GM doesn’t get the points you made. Look at how The Accord and Camry’s packages are structured. They need to get a clue. Plus a real sports package like every other sedan in it’s class would help. Camry offers the XE in 4cyl and 6 for example. And lose that dorkey gearshift on the gear lever. If you’re going to offer a way to shift it yourself include paddles or don’t offer it at all.
How do you increase the price of a product that isn’t selling in the numbers you would like???
Barra did this so the cars would not sell so she can discontinue them and Close More Factories
Those base small engine models with limited options are geared for the car rental markets and a teaser for ads, starting at $22,965, as shown $ 32,695. The dealer cut on the sale of a vehicle is very low then the sharks let out of the holding tank. Then they add “dealer fluff” that always seem to add another $2,000. It’s that factory looking in house printed sticker placed right next to the factory window sticker. $995 for paint sealant, $450 for fabric protector, $350 for pin striping, and never shown is the $595 dealer fee and any else that can be added that provides $0 dollars in valve. When you get into the business office to do the paper work, you are then thrown into the shark tank. Warranty add in, finance 100%, etc., etc.
The list prices are very good, just don’t pay for the fluff.
Has anyone actually seen a Malibu Premier with their own eyes on a dealer lot? The local Chevy dealers around me stock only the LT models.
Yes. A couple of dealers in my area are socked with them.
GM logic – we can’t give away the Malibu, and just had a $5,000 markdown on stale 2018 stock….what should we do???? I, I’ve got it – let’s raise the price. Maybe they won’t remember the Malibu will be an orphan before long.
GM should stop selling the Mailbu until they can figure out why the vehicle generates a notice that says “the engine is powering down” at which time the vehicle suddenly slows down. I am in the process of determining if the lemon law applies to my 2017 Malibu. I purchased my vehicle brand new in June of 2017 and by October 2017, I started experiencing issues with the engine light coming on, radio not working, and interior lights come on when they feel like it. I reached out to GM on several occasions regarding the issue with the engine and have been blown off. I they are waiting for someone to rear end me resulting in death or serious injury due to a driver(s) behind me not knowing that the vehicle is losing power. Back to Chrysler I go. Never again will I drive another GM product.
Happened to other people. A hard reset of the computer solved the problem. Same thing has been happening to Honda’s as well. Thinking maybe they are using the same computer system from whatever parts vendor? One person went to another dealer instead of the dealer where she purchased the vehicle to fix the issue because the original dealer was not trying to fix anything. The other dealer fixed it and it never happened again.
Thank you. Over the past 3 month I have spent nearly $600 and the issue still has not been resolved.
