That Trax outsold all other rivals, including the Jeep Renegade (see Jeep Renegade sales), Hyundai Kona, Ford EcoSport (see Ford EcoSport sales), Honda HR-V, the new Nissan Kicks, Toyota CH-R, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Kia Niro, the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Mazda CX-3 (see Mazda CX-3 sales), Fiat 500X (see Fiat 500X sales), and the discontinued Nissan Juke.
We should note that the three FCA offerings in the segment – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X – accounted for a very impressive 60,983 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the two GM offerings – the Chevy Trax and Buick Encore – accounted for a cumulative 45,653 deliveries. As such, FCA outsold GM by 15,330 units during the period. GM held a 23 percent market share while FCA held an even higher 31 percent.
It’s also worth noting that the Trax significantly underperformed the average segment growth rate during the quarter, growing 16 percent while the segment grew an average 37 percent. That means that, on average, sales of rival models grew at a faster pace than those of the Trax.
The subcompact mainstream crossover segment expanded 37 percent during Q4 2018 and 43 percent during the complete 2018 calendar year.
The GM Authority Take
Going forward, we expect Trax sales volume to remain healthy, but continue being threatened by newer segment rivals, including the Ford EcoSport, Nissan Kicks, Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R, Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona.
The Trax is now of the oldest offerings in the segment, and Chevy is hard at work on completely overhauling (redesigning and reengineering) the model, which is expected for the 2020 model year, alongside an all-new, second-generation Buick Encore.
Once the all-new, second-generation Trax completes its rollout, we expect GM to sell even more units of the Trax while realizing an even higher market share in the mainstream subcompact crossover space.

About Chevrolet Trax
The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover utility vehicle. It slots below the Equinox as Chevrolet's smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo and Buick Encore. The model was Chevrolet's first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space and the second (after the Nissan Juke) to launch in its segment in the U.S. market.
Having launched for the 2015 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, the replacement of the LTZ trim by the new range-topping Premier model, revised interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more.
The 2018 Chevy Trax represents the fourth model year of the first-generation Trax and receives several changes including three new exterior colors, a new Trax Redline Edition model, and several equipment-level changes. The 2019 Trax got three new exterior colors and a new Premier badge on the tailgate. The 2020 model is expected to be the last model year of the current, first-generation Trax before an all-new, second-generation model arrives.
The Trax, which is called the Chevrolet Tracker in some markets like South America, Russia and the CIS, is built at the following GM plants:
- GM Bupyeong factory in Bupyeong-Gu, South Korea operated by GM Korea - supplies Eurasia, North America and Holden Trax to Australia/New Zealand
- GM San Luis Potosi factory in San Luis, Mexico operated by GM Mexico - supplies North America
- GM Dongyue South in Yantai, Shandong, China operated by GM China and SAIC - supplies China

Two big surprises here for this happy Buick Encore owner —
1. The Encore is selling better than the Trax?!? Wow.
2. If you combine the Encore and Trax — GM is the #1 selling subcompact SUV. Wow-eee-WOW!
I thought SUV’s were outselling sedans. The 2018 4th quarter Cruze sales were 32,955 (that number kicked Trax’s sales by a country mile).
We just leased a new Encore. It leased a little better than the Trax. It has a higher window sticker yet leases for a little less than the Trax. Nicer appointments and equipment with the Encore.
